It's weird every United fan I've spoken too seems happy with their defence, they reckon Darmain (fair enough) and Shaw are very good full backs, and have complete faith in Smalling as the number one centre back, and Rojo, Blind etc as the second centre back. Now admittedly I haven't seen that much of Smalling over the last year, but does that seem completely fucking bonkers to anyone else?

Not surprised that most are slagging off their defence but ... Darmian looks great (though not at crossing), Smalling is their best CB and is quite consistent, Blind has played well there, he won't be the incumbent come next Summer, he's slow but he's reliable and sees danger coming, Shaw is getting back to his Southampton form and shielding the defence is one or two of Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger or Carrick.
Behind them they have Romero who seems OK though it tragically looks like De Gea will have to see out the season. But that's a very strong defence ..... at the cost of midfield creativity and forward play.
They really look shite up front and I really hope that they don't get a real goal-scorer before the transfer window closes, because if they don't then they're fucked !

For all the talk of how poor our defense is we finished last season with the 3rd least goals scored after a rocky start. And then since November last year we have conceded the least amount of goals in the PL.

Granted a chunk of that was down to the heroics of De Gea. Still not sure if we will manage to hold until the window closes, but at the moment it looks we are unwilling to sell and he will sit on the bench until September 2nd.

Of the 6 defensive players we have De Gea, Shaw, Darmian, Schneiderlin, Smalling and Blind.

The first 4 are good enough for a title challenge IMO and definitely for a top 4 place.

The real questing marks are over the CB pairing

Smalling does look he stepped up a lvl at the back end of last season after an injury ridden season, so I am hopeful he can do ok there.
Blind haven't a clue how he willing adapt to that position yet, so far looks sound but hasn't really been tested.

It is far from perfect but it is probably better than your own defense and on par with arsenal's in terms of personnel. But as a unit and how they are coached I think United are stronger.

As some on here have pointed out the defensive stability is coming at the price of piss poor attacking play.
We need a top top attacking player to make up for this.

But they are hard to get and can't see who we could bring in at this stage.

Many people have commented on how much more solid United look in fairness. Full back area definitely looks like it's sorted for you. And as you've mentioned Smalling and Blind haven't been properly tested yet as a partnership, but they could be good enough to get you through until January perhaps.

This isn't a Liverpool vs United thing, as we've wasted plenty of money ourselves, but i still find it staggering you're in the desperate position of needing another top top attacking player in your words...given the money invested in that United squad in the last 2 years.

As i've pointed out elsewhere net £120m odd over two years is about enough to keep pace with the pack these days.

A few clean sheets at home to some shit teams and their defence is now brilliant.
Only in Manchester.

I never said it was brilliant but should be ok for top 4 this season.

Not talking about just the last few games we have conceded very little since November last year.

Deluded.

MANCHESTER -- Louis van Gaal claimed Manchester United do not need to sign a striker after they were held to a goalless draw by Newcastle.

There does seem to be rather excessive glee at listing MUs weaknesses in this thread, which in itself is fine of course, but I'd prefer to do it when we ourselves have a stronger team and we don't.

Your defense at the beginning of last season was a disaster waiting to happen but it has to be admitted it settled down pretty well. I think Depay and Schneiderlin are great signings, with Pigclimber possibly getting fit you can't accuse the owners of not backing the manager. Your play is a straight up tribute to LVGs face which is funny as fuck to watch because it goes against your so called principles so well and you can't help but look At the signings you have made and get the feeling that you have come down a fair way from that perch...

Last season I thought you were often garbage and it might well be true to say that if we hadn't have so completely imploded you would not be in the CL this but we did implode and you guys didn't despite yourselves. LVG did manage to get that pretty rag taggle bunch to churn out some important victories against the bigger clubs and that possibly bodes well for you guys. He has the stubbornness and ego required for the club.

Mata began to show, again, what a player he is and De Gea was fantastic, the De Gea situation needs sorting one way or another. Rooney is beginning to show his age and heavy build and I think you will lack goals to challenge in any meaningful way...

You may "challenge" like you did last season in as much as find yourself within 4 or 5 points for a week or two around Christmas and LVG will talk it up but everyone knew it was bullshit... I suspect even you guys.

You could do with a really dominant centre half and a top notch striker, preferably a very fast one, I think your centre mids are probably the third best group of centre mids in the league and if you can keep a decent goaly in place you will most likely finish top 4, but it won't be pretty.

I on the other hand will be praying that our equally disjointed new squad can gel enough to push you guys out again, I think we might especially if Sturridge comes back well... But then again... The early season away fixtures of ours are almost a written invitation for negative early season morale.

Oh and please don't post The Lying Rag ta...

VanGaal is a world class shite talker, and we should know we have been listening to one for the last 3 seasons ourselves. He got off lightly lastly season simply because he was competent and not David Moyes. There will be alot more pressure this season and already the cracks are starting to show in terms of his legendary ability to stir up trouble. He will see out this season and implode mid way through next season.

I think its probably fair to say they have a better first XI than us but the lack of alternatives to Rooney up front is going to scupper any chance they might have had of a title challenge. I think alot of teams will see they are not a huge attacking threat anymore and set up to play for a draw against them and possibly nick something. They will be in the mix for 3rd - 5th but not higher than that. He will make them difficult to beat so they could do well in the cups though

Rooney will be 30 this season and he increasingly looks like busted flush, they are going to have to spend the best part of 70 - 80 million in the next 12 months to rebuild their attack if they want to challenge for the title. The problem is they can easily afford to do that, they have a much higher tolerance for terrible signings than we do.

Van Gaal's quite hypnotic when he talks, because he explains the bleeding obvious as if he thinks it's the first time anyone has ever explained it to anyone. 'There are two halves. Forty-five minutes each. If you don't score in the first half, you need to score in the second half. Otherwise, the best you can get is 0-0. Or the worst: you lose. So you must score goals...more goals than the other team...'

True, but IMO it's partly because his English is relatively poor (though in fairness it's the third foreign language he's had to learn in his career).

Of course, being a couple of studs short of a boot doesn't help him much either.

Brilliant watching Mo Farah win the 10k gold yesterday despite 3 Kenyans ganging up on him. And Jessica ENNIS-HILL should wrap up her gold in the pentathlon this evening (this has been a brilliant competition) since her 800m time is far better than any of those that have an outside chance of catching her - she needs to finish 6 secs behind one of them, never going to happen.

Really really sorry for the young scouser Katarina JOHNSON-THOMPSON who had easily the longest long jump which would have put her in the gold medal position (pre Javelin, her weakest event and the 800m one of her strongest). Two fouls but in her final jump her toe was barely 1-2cm over the plasticine. Very very tough way to go out.

Oh sorry ! I thought this was the Random Shite thread. Beg your pardon.

No, apparently this is the Clumsy Attempt at Sarcasm thread.

I must say I was impressed by Jessica. For someone who sells credit cards to then do so well at athletics, well, it's quite an achievement.

I see Depay lost the ball a Premier League record of 35 times in the game yesterday.

And Froggy is going senile. That clearly belonged in Other Sports

Utd look more solid at the back. No point in saying otherwise. As a consequence in the 4-3-3 they play Rooney as the lone striker and he clearly doesnt look up to it in that role so far.
Smalling, Darmian and Schneiderlin have looked good. Blind will struggle against better strikers and Shaw still look very meh.

All in all, who gives a fuck. But they're probably the team to catch for 4th.
