Mascherano has cost us this fixture twice now.

He gave the option of Webb giving the penalty. Tugging back, the penalty line, with the player in full flow, at Old Trafford.

It was inevitable. We need to be smarter than that, and that starts with not shying away from personal responsibility.
Why did Mascherano have to chase Valencia ?

That's the real problem.
Because Insua is a sack of shit, probably. I need to see it again to be sure.

But that absolve a senior player for giving away a stupid, stupid penalty.
But then again where has Agger been?

Oh come on. He still had hold of his arm as he was crossing teh line into the area pulling him back. So he fell into the area & he started pulling out of it, it's still a pen.

FFF is right.
No mate, he is not. Masher had let go before the guy "toppled" in the area.

I'm now convinced gerrard is saving himself for the world cup. his effort today was shocking.
he has been awful in every single away game, this is the guy paid ten times more than the likes of Insua and can't manage anything outside his comfort zone at Anfield

He deserves to be paid 100 times more than Insewer.

And to claim he has been "awful in every single away game" merely serves to illustrate why you are a fucking Headwand.

fuck the strikers position, next season our number one priority HAS to be left back because our current left back is the worst I've had the misfortune to witness in all my years of supporting the club and I've seen djimi traore

What were you expecting?

That he'd criticise our 'tactical genius'?

Gerrard has been poor this season, and this has been a significant contribution to our being poor in general.

Every one of our good players has had periods where they have underperformed this year, however, Gerrard's has never really found consistent form this season.

This isn't an either or thing.

Perhaps all the years of entirely carrying the team have worn him out prematurely and we are witnessing his decline sooner than expected.

I'd rather think he's just suffering from the team being strangled by Rafa's style and tactics and he'll come alive again when Jose arrives.

Please add the rider "as our manager" as turning up in charge of Man City isn't going to have the same effect, I don't think.

Bascombe wrote in the NOTW today that Mourinho will be sounded out if Rafa goes, and that he's told "associates" he would be interested in the challenge of getting LFC back to the top provided H and G go and the club stabilises off the field.

That doesn't make it alright, Jules.

Had he accidentally clipped his heals then fair enough, but he knew what he was doing and it cost us. It was always going to be given a penalty at Old Trafford, and he should have known that as far as I'm concerned. Like I said earlier, we've got to be smarter than that.

That doesn't make Webb's decision all right either, Squiggs.

However, I wouldn't disagree with your analysis. I'm a big Masher fan and I hope to goodness he stays, but it's true that his judgment lets him down at times and we'll have to work on that if he sticks around.

He's Argentinian/South American - it's what they do.

It was a penalty. Going the other way, we'd be bating for blood had we not gotten it.

We got exactly what we deserved today.

Torres will never again miss TWO such glorious chances like he did today. And isn't that three successive games where he's talked himself into the book?

Us crying out for the same the other way doesn't make it so.

Frankly, I simply do not believe anyone who says that had one of our lads been fouled exactly the same way, they would not have looked for a penalty.

Maybe so, old pal, but when the ref didn't give it and I saw the replay I'd have said fair enough.

hahahahahahaaa oh dear god hahahahaaaahhahaaaaa

Extremely disappointing and I think this match is a microcosm of our season. Benitez was cautious, as he has been far too often this season and selected Lucas to partner Mascherano, over Aquilani who performed excellently against Portsmouth. Now the Mascherano / Lucas partnership has not worked all season, therefore I don’t see why he is still persisting with it when Aquilani did so well the last game, even if he didn’t think Aquilani was tough enough in centre midfield for this type of game, Gerrard could have been used in the position.

We started well, with a superb header from Torres. However after that moment United controlled the game and looked the only winners bar a couple of chances for Torres, which he should have probably done better with.

As fans we can cope with losing. But what we won’t accept is what we saw today, a lack of hunger to press United in possession – such as closing down Fletcher for the cross to Park to score the second. We also won’t accept the lack of intent to win the game and that for me comes from the manager and how he sets up our team rather than the players. Look at Glen Johnson, when he first came to the club he was bombing forward, beating opposition full backs for fun and causing havoc, but it seems Rafa’s cautious approach has robotised him and he’s playing within himself, as are Gerrard and many other players.

Torres and Gerrard were feeding off scraps again today, as Mascherano and Lucas, as a combination did not control the game.
That is what Benitez wants, the centre midfielders to be disciplined, break up play and control the game – well they didn’t control the game and they haven’t bossed many games all season, as in possession they are not good enough to spot the passes quick enough or more importantly implement these passes – that is where Alonso has been missed and we have two players who can offer this in Aquilani and Gerrard, however our manager doesn’t play them, due to his cautious approach.

It was funny, when Benitez brought on our better players, attacking-wise – Benayoun and Aquilani in particular and to a lesser extent Babel – we actually created some chances in the last few minutes and looked a very good team and one that would hurt United. However it seems this only occurs when we are behind in games when Benitez shows more attacking intent and urgency to win games. The players today showed no urgency, they were jogging round the field, rather than running their bollocks off to try and salvage something from this woeful season and trying to get the three points to keep us in the hunt for fourth, which now seems very unlikely. That is unacceptable!

What we need is a change and that starts from the manager who is accountable for this awful season. The side needs a manager that will get Torres, Gerrard, Aquilani, Johnson etc playing football, attacking teams and looking to win every game. United could have been beaten today, as this isn’t a great United team, however our cautious manager went there and showed them far too much respect in my opinion. You have to earn all the points in this league and being attacking pays off as one win and a loss is better than two draws and we have had far too many draws the last three seasons, due to Rafa picking the wrong, cautious team.

Our players need to play with more freedom and not be scared to try things in the final third, as that is how you break teams down by being creative, not being efficient. Babel needs to be told to run at teams and scare the shit out of them with his pace, rather than constantly worrying about losing possession or how his defensive position will look on pro zone to keep his place in the team. Johnson should be encouraged to get forward, as he is a huge threat when he does, we need to stop playing two defensive midfielders and play Gerrard or Aquilani alongside Mascherano, see less graft of Kuyt and more craft of Benayoun...

For me the mentality is all wrong and it was highlighted today with our approach to the game. It was far too reactive, worrying about United, rather than letting United worry about us, being pro active. This is a microcosm of our season and Benitez’s helm, he is too cautious and domestically this approach has cost us and this is shown with only one title challenge in six seasons... that for me is not good enough with the players we have.

It's as good as officially confirmed that Stevie has indeed split with his delightful other half & is living apart from her.

Considering our captain hasnt got the strongest of mentalities it makes sense he's not performing.
