Liverpool v Brighton & Hove Albion - Match Thread

The seasons dead. Playing for a champions league place, the past 6 weeks has killed our season.

I just hope to see the team evolve the way it plays against shit cunt sides that want to sit deep for 85 minutes between now and the end of the season, so we can start next season with a genuine hope of being in the running for the league

Yep. And hopefully we won't risk rushing back players this season, ensuring we are fit to hit the ground running next season. Top 4 and CL run now.

This is the bottom line ...
We've taken TWO (!!!!!!) points out of 15 from games against West Brom, Burnley, Newcastle, Brighton and Soton ...
Just can't have that kind of rut and expect to stick with a City team hitting stride.
It's unfortunate ...

Back to the drawing board for Klopp and Linders then.

It really depends on your definition of the term. It's rare for one moment of magic to unlock an entire defense. Thiago often plays a low fast ball, whilst looking another way, which catches the opponents off guard. The problem is both Salah and Mane have struggled to control it in recent weeks. He plays the pass before the assist as it were. He's certainly creative and has excellent close control to beat a man.

But it's not fully clicking with this team yet.

Yeah thats fair, and you can see how hes done that a number of times already. But I think his real value this season will be in the CL where teams dont drop as deep and he will have more time to pick his passes. It would help if he had Fabinho and Henderson beside him but thats probably not going to happen til Sept.

You're doing a terrible job at not caring mate.

You really can choose to change your expectations and level of emotional involvement if you want to. Forget about this silly passion of ours when we lose, enjoy the good moments more. Trust me, your life will be better off for it.

It's tough when your expectations are high ... and I still am so crazy about this team, that losing fucks up my evenings .. Got to bed pissed ... not healthy.
I don't know how you can control it so well ... I wish I could but don't know how (yet?)

I couldn't pinpoint the moment, but crazy salaries, over-commercialisation, VAR, Martin Tyler, years and years of boom bust cycles... they all slowly chipped away at my interest in the game. Going to Anfield and winning a title remained something I really desired through all of that.

Both things happened, and both brought me intense joy. It just feels ridiculous at this point to let myself get disappointed by anything this set of players, staff, and owners do.

I also never thought it's possible to win the league every single year. Every second year would be absolutely incredible right? How silly would it be if we went on to do that and yet still felt that half our lives were a disappointment?

You talk too much sense.
You're right re: disappointment (although it's clear I'm feeling it too much despite what they've given us the last two years).
You're right re: insanely high expectations
Worth trying ... good points as always.
Tough but will try ... (likely fail but if no try ... )

It's crazy really. Just 8/9 points from that and we'd be neck and neck with them.

City have won 13 in a row. Hard to fight that consistency. Kinda came out of nowhere

They've been the bookies' favourites all season, presumably because it's particularly hard to repeat a title win. The fact that they've gone and found a decent CB partnership just when we had ours wrecked by injury hasn't hurt their prospects either.

And they can smash the caffeine doping after they held off last year and while we’ve killed half the team this year.

It’s a wonder there’s any caffeine left in Manchester what with Ole’s mob snorting it like Al Pacino at the end of Scareface

The condensed season with little break meant this was always going to be a league where the best squad won, rather than in previous years where the best First XI has been the main factor. We've had tons of injuries but our replacements are not the quality that other teams are getting. City and United are rotating a lot - City have about 15 defenders and they get quality from their replacement full backs and from their replacement CBs. United are getting output from their replacement attackers (with the help of Bruno being a game changer to their fortunes) like Greenwood, Cavani etc.

Over the course of the season, with more players back we should be fine but quite simply the quality drop off when we bring in Origi, Milner, Tsimikas, Neco, Shaq is just too much.

Apart from key injuries the biggest difference from last season is the players look shattered every game. last season it almost didn't matter how we started a game as we'd steamroller the opposition in the second half with our attitude and energy levels but this season when we need the change of tempo or acceleration it just isn't there. They all look flat and one paced and shite teams are matching us for endevour, defending deep and taking points from us. Most of the time deservedly.
Plenty of reasons why we look goosed including covid, short pre season, punishing schedule the past three seasons, key injuries, players playing out of position and no fans but I still think we should be doing better.
I'm not sure what we can do to address it and if we don't at least qualify for the Champions league then the season will be disastrous.

Maybe our ped dealer is being done

We need better

Origi , Shaq and ox are simply not good enough

We also massively need to shift the way we play football against teams employing the low block , we are fucking hopeless against all deep defensive block sides , like worst in the league against them

We do have to remember Ox and Shaq have come back from long lay offs. They need the game time. With a fully fit squad, both fit and firing are great back up to what we have, as proven in the past. Origi is just pure lazy and we knew that.

I think we have more to worry about than those two. But they will be exposed in that sort of game.

Shaq is an asset if we use him correctly - we saw that in his assist for Jota pre Christmas. He is a creative player who excels in tight spaces. Yesterday we put him in the front three to be the recipient of passes, not the creator of them. What a waste - he should be a bit deeper with another runner ahead of him... Or we should line up differently to the strengths of our team.

We are starting to look like a one trick pony, and the trick is shit when we don't have our first XI. Will Klopp try to adapt?

That’s the big problem with those two, the ratio of injured/ getting back to form/ playing well is heavily skewed towards the first two states. Not great to have your depth unready when needed.

Similar story with Keita and Matip except that they could be regular starters if injuries allowed it.

Too many can’t be relied on imo

Some of the players are mentally and physically knackerd as the Boss has indicated. And the injuries have just escalated the problem. The signing of Jota helped but
maybe the Boss should've brought another front man in to spread the load up top in the window. It's crisis point, if we continue to falter against teams we normally put to the sword, we won't even get top 4.

The City game won't really tell us if we're back on track because we can get up for the big games but it's the run of the mill, the bread and butter games that we are falling down on. The spark is missing in those games.

Could try something off the wall..a bit...after the Everton game on 20th...rest nearly the whole first team for the Sheff U game..21st Feb to 2st March...8/9 days rest...then back at it for 6th March home to Fulham. It's a risk, but carrying on with a half knackered squad without any serious down time could see us finish with sod all.

Send them off to Butlins for the week..

Ok..Ok..you don't like the Butlins idea...fair enough..what he does is this..get the squad together...."right if you lot don't get yer finger out and start feckin' playin'...next season..it's the dreaded Thursday League..day and half to get there..against some biscuit factory team..back of beyond...pitch full of holes and stones..hotel from hell..powdered egg and sausages a fortnight old...bog gets blocked up, showers don't work...feckin' day and a half to get back...It's your choice...."

Because ... WE ARE LIVERPOOL TRA LA LA LA ... and we're going to win the league.

I love you and your optimism, mate... But you're killing yourself here. The sooner that you accept that this year is fucked - has been since the everton match - and that anything we do in it is a bonus, the better for you, and all those around you.

Next year - if everybody is fit again - we'll win everything.
