Johnson - worth persisting with ?

I've made the argument before that Glenjo's bad performances are much more costly that his good ones. While that can be said about any defender, I think it's something you have to live with from your CB's, but not so much from your fullbacks, which is where this is becoming an issue.

Is it worth gambling on Glenjo's form week to week like this? Look at what Flanagan did today, he provided an outlet at an unfamiliar position, and you can definitely say he did more good for defense than bad. If Jon Flanagan can put in that sort of performance, I can't imagine it would be hard to find an improvement at RB, where the body of work is significantly better than the highlights as it is with Glenjo.

I'm in the same boat as you.

He looks really good at times because he's very comfortable on the ball and can beat players, but it so often ever results in anything for us. His passing and crossing is average at best. I'd take a solid a no nonsense right back over him every single day of the week.

Heh. I'll just copy and paste my reply then.

Johnson was more adventurous in attack though, was involved in some good interplay and got into some good positions.

He did have his issues but with greater support from the midfield I think we'd see the number of errors reduced. That one where he gave the ball away because he was trying to turn away from the defender - he spent about an age looking for an out ball and there wasn't one there so he was forced into choosing between hoofing it and trying to turn. On that occasion he made the wrong decision and got caught out, but generally speaking the players should be doing more for each other.

The answer is, yes, he is worth persisting with until we get someone obviously better.

What a surprise that those with the agenda plough in first.

Not difficult to find better ? You have to be fucking joking .. or drunk.

In other sports statisticians have made some significant progress with being able to define how valuable a player is to a team in terms of wins above replacement or in terms of points or goals added to a team because of the player.

With Johnson I have absolutely no doubt that his figure would be a big minus, despite the fact he looks good a lot of the time. Looks can be deceiving

As can stats.

My eyes say he is one of our better players, seems every England manager since Johnson made the team agrees with that.

Glenjo only completed 62% of his passes, and was dispossessed 3 times.

Only player who lost the ball more was Suarez(5), which was typically in the attacking third. No player short of Mignolet had a lower pass completion %.

The only player to play more passes than Glenjo(47) was Gerrard(60). Glenjo took the most touches(84) of any player, followed closely by Gerrard(82).

Take these how you will, but if he's receiving so much of the ball, he has to do better.

If you're making your argument based on the selections of England managers, you're either joking or drunk.

Sven and McLaren didn't pick him much, if at all.

Capello and Hodgson have.

Well you are obviously not making yours based on performances so I reserve the right to use England managers' choice of their RB.

He was 19 yrs old when Sven first picked him so not surprising he didn't get many starts before Sven fell in 2006 (he gave him 5 caps) !

MacLaren didn't pick him (don't know if injuries played any part in that) but was gone within a year so maybe that says something.

44 caps in England's next 67 matches (you can also deduct any where he was injured and not in the squad) says it all.

Just as much validity as your argument based on nothing but opinion.

Hmm. Johnson was one of our better players today, despot the absolute gash marking when they scored (which is a norm for our players these days).
His work rate running up and down the pitch was great.
I agree with Keni's post.

Most of those passes where it was intercepted was either when he was trying to do something in the final third or where he was left no option but to hoof it from deep in our half when offered no support. Dispossessed 3 times. Really? You're criticising a fullback that tries to get past players instead of just passing back to play it safe for that?
Biased much?

Read what Keniget said. No support from MF. As I said to Ross - stats don't show you the whole picture but they are not bad for an ATTACKING FB.

If anything, he played a poor pass in the midfield most frequently, and most on short/backwards passes along the wing.

The frustrating thing is its not just poor defensive play, its a criminal lack of intelligence and concentraton.

Worth persisting with? Lol, he's.superb, he should always start.

For the record, I didn't start this thread or title it. This was something I posted in the postmatch thread that Ross(?) moved into a fresh thread.

Its his lack of concentration thats the biggest issue for me.
He's at the point now where we need to make up our minds regarding his new contract.
18 months left and with insanly big wages. There isnt a chance in hell he should get the same contract if we renere it.

I like him but we can find someone better. He's a big strong lad and yet he didnt even give Lukaku a fight.
