Pacheco played at every age group too, it's no great indicator of future success

True. But worth the gamble no ?

Chelsea are doing it in droves. City are doing it. Barca/Real do it all the time. However when we do it people start complaining ? I don't get it really.

Yea it is worth it. Like with Origi, that's a great idea, but we won't own this guy that's the difference.

Obviously it all depends on the agreement we reach with Athletico but my pessimism makes me think that if he turns out to be fantastic it won't be as easy as handing over 6 million euros. If it is that simple though it's a good deal.

FFP dictates clubs have to act in this way. It's like gambling on the stock market.

They should tighten up the loan system. Would stop Chelsea carrying on the way they do.

Seems to me like a typical FSG youth policy gamble. €6m or whatever for a highly rated kid in a position we are relatively weak. Not for this season and maybe not even next but for 2-3 yrs down the line he could turn out to be our regular RB and at worst I can't imagine losing money on him.

Yep, though going back to my original point, I was more questioning why they valued Moreno at £20m but this kid as a loan-to-possible transfer. If anything Manquillo looks more highly rated, to me.

Isn't one a RB and one a LB?

Yeah, that's not what my point is though. They seem at a similar age and stage of their career (and ability level). I'm just trying to establish why they were happy to pay £20m for one and now this deal has come up. There's no particular indication at this stage that they are in for both, and like I said, we have players who can cover both flanks, so it could just be a case of us being on a look out for a good available fullback, with "preference" for a left back.

Maybe it's just a good deal we didn't see coming up.

Moreno is for the here and now and this Manquillo kid for 1-2 years down the line. At least that's how it looks.

Atletico themselves were rumoured to be sending Manquillo + Baptista + 12m to Sevilla for Moreno, so I suppose the lower valuation of Manquillo isn't just by us.

Really? It seems a bit pointless to loan him with a view to buying him then, he needs to play games to see whether those 1-2 years down the line will happen.

I'd say Moreno is well ahead of Manquillo at this stage having been first choice left-back for a decent side and played in a European final. Manquillo played 3 times last year in La Liga.

That said, I have no idea who is potentially the better player.

hard not to think he may be another luis alberto but lets see . At least it's a signing from left field that nobody expected . Excitinnnnnng!

My issue with this signing is that he looks average and still quite inexperienced. When it comes to defenders I dont trust our transfer committee at all. Why not go for Serge Aurier if he's available for 8m? Arsenal are no longer in for him. He would definitely displace johnson. Getting Manquillo means johnson still being our number 1 RB. Its one of the pointless signings which you can see a mile off like aspas and alberto.

Sounded like PSG had all but wrapped up that deal until yesterday.

Hopefully this isn't like the Dani Carvajal situation because if so we are just developing a player for A.Madrid.

I guess we're not signing a very expensive LB now anyways.

Against Porto. The bit at 3:18 or so I like. Picks up the ball in midfield, drives at the Porto defence, but gets his pass/shot blocked at the edge of the box, giving Porto possession. He turns around and the ball is now 12 yards ahead of him, but he runs the length of the pitch back to intercept and recover his own corner flag. Porto's break was slow and the ball control at the end sucked and allowed him to get back to defend, but it doesn't take away from the effort he made in trying to recover.

Hmm, I was actually hoping we'd go for a top notch full back this summer.

I'd go as far to say the fact we haven't done means we won't be playing quite the same gung ho style next season.

This is all very interesting but no one is asking the real question....

Is he a baller???

Here's the highlights from his Wiki:

This is a long-winded way of saying he seems shit.

Sort of signing Fulham would make.

What medium priced punts? Are we selectively ignoring the £40m odd spent on two players? Or the £20m we're trying to spend on a centre back, or the £20m we tried to spend on Moreno?

Don't take too much notice of me, Mark.

I'm referring to guys like Alberto, Moses, Cissokho and Aspas which are nothing more than hit and hope type efforts. IMO! I recognise not every signing can be from the top shelf and there has to be an element of pragmatism involved. But sending Suso on loan and buying Alberto? Or Borini on loan and buying Aspas? How much though went into that? I accept there may well be more to these but from the outside it looks little more than stabbing in the dark.

And this new RB. Is he really better than the newly sent-out-on-loan Wisdom? Or Flanagan, who hasn't? Surely the smart thinking says buy a LB and use Flanagan as the back-up RB. Or just keep Wisdom at the club.

These are just my thoughts. I am not pretending to know more than Rodgers or anyone else at LFC. Just venting and penning a bit of bewilderment, really

I know, but smaller punts on lesser priority areas are ok I suppose in trying to unearth the odd gem.. the losses are pretty minor. Lambert is sound business, £5m for a striker who scored 15 last season, as a short term option. I think people just want a marquee signing and anything elsse in the meantime is meaningless.

I want there to be a clear strategy. I want to strengthen in positions which need strengthening. We need to upgrade both fullbacks and we should be prioritising that. And also the midfield (though not many people share that particular view).

I do think we need a top drawer attacking signing and for more than one reason. But our work till now, far from being meaningless, has been excellent save for another medium priced punt in Can Though I'm hoping - and happy - to be proven wrong there.

We'll obviously see what pans out but those are my thoughts as of now.
