So what do we make of him then? I thought he was quite impressive yesterday, good in the air, attacked the ball and he was positionally pretty sound. Physically he needs to bulk up a bit, but he didn't look out of place.

Does he have a future here?

Well, "here" is a place where Mamadou Sakho, Kolo Toure and Lucas can both get a game at CB, so at the moment, yeah.

When we manage to get a CB partnership that isn't one of the worst in the entire league, probably not.

He's yet to truly convince in a loan spell and we brought in Caulker presumably to play ahead of him should the need arise.

He had his moments yesterday and has looked decent for Portugal but on the whole his signing is looking like a big fat waste of 7M.

How did we end up paying that much for him anyways? It's always seemed excessive.

A report was released a few months ago (Rosco/Binny?) which said we only paid about £3m. The deal was structured but I don't think he's anywhere close to activating any of the add-ons.

He looked really classy when we signed him. And he looked very good and very promising for some time after. But he seemed to be bunged out on loan just to get him off the premises rather than to hone his skills. And god knows what happened at Villa, he came back looking physically as if they'd kept him in plaster. There is a proper talent there, but as Mark said he needs to build himself up physically, and there needs to be real urgency now in terms of his attitude. Time's ticking louder and louder.

That's not so bad then I guess. Frustrating player as he's talented but something clearly not right with him.

I posted that here:

So far, £3.75m only, because he hasn't played enough games for the appearance add-ons to start kicking in.

-- Transfer fee: 4.8m euros

-- Add-ons: 1.5m euros (max), being: 500K euros per 15 matches Ilori plays for us in the league, FA Cup, League Cup, EL or CL

-- Sell-on clause: 25% of transfer fee payable to Sporting Lisbon if we sell Ilori to anyone for more than the transfer fee we paid Sporting Lisbon for him (i.e. if we sell him for more than 4.8m euros, they get 25% of the transfer fee)

-- "Buyback" clause: we have to notify Sporting Lisbon if we receive an acceptable offer for Ilori; Sporting Lisbon then has a 2-business day window to match the offer (minus 25% of the offer price if it's over 4.8m euros)

-- "Lockout" clause: we are not allowed to sell Ilori to any of Benfica, Porto or Braga before 10th Sep 2018 unless the transfer fee offered by any of them to us is at least 60m euros (hahahahaha). If a ludicrous offer of such value or higher (hahahahahahaha) is received, then Sporting Lisbon is entitled to 50% of the fee (instead of 25%). After 10th Sep 2018, this clause doesn't apply and we can sell to anyone (the buyback clause still applies).

I thought he was excellent yesterday. Whether that is an indication of how he could perform week-in week-out is something else. However we don't need to go looking for a Toure replacement in the Summer, as on that form he is definitely worthy of a squad place and he's still very young for a CB (as is Gomez).

Hasn't let us down in the few games he's played. Whether he can get better is down to how many games he gets to play. I know that Toure isn't going to get any better and I've got less and less trust in Sakho so I don't see why he can't be a decent backup.

Gomez eats Illori for breakfast.

Gomez made quite a few mistakes after his initial few games. He's good though, but he's another who's young and hasn't played a great deal of football. It's at least worth giving him a go and or having him on the bench from now until the end of the season. I mean, what are we going to learn that we don't already know about an aging Toure? Or Sakho?

Gomez will make it. Seen enough of him to know there's a first team player in there.

Sakho has been really disappointing. I really thought he would be the next Lilian Thuram but now he's playing more like Djimi Traore instead. I hope it's just a blip and he'll get back on form.

But overall my record is still pretty good. Remember when everyone was going on about which striker should we buy and many wanted Lacazette, Bony and even Kramaric (wtf ?!) and I was clamoring for Paolo Dybala. Well look at him now. Lots of top teams want him.

I know talent when I see one. 😉

Sakho plays a bit like a rocking horse that has been animated, but not given full articulation of his limbs. Like an equine Pinnochio, but worse at defending

Nice, those are some words i never expected to be used together but they form a very accurate description

I'd have Ilori ahead of Kolo at the very least. Great personality, made a good start and all that but he's really panicked these days and it should definitely be his last season as a Liverpool player.

We cant continue the pattern of buying promising young center backs and giving them zero games. Wilson, Coates, Ilori and there are probably others we've ruined. Just scrap buying youngsters for decent money, although our record with big money older center backs is shite too recently.

I think what some people are really not taking into account and really should is the fact he's played three competitive games in the best part of a year.
Given that, I think he's been good and better in each game .
I saw him play for Portugal Under 21s V England last June , which probably was his last competitive game before last month- he had Harry Kane in his fucking pocket-
I think there is a player in there and we need to stop fucking about and play him to find out, if he's not - get rid

No worse than what we saw from the others. But saying that to me Lovren is our best at the moment.

Sakho- Rollerfuckingcoaster
Skrtel- i like him as he is a veteran LFC and culture carrier.
Toure- nice guy on downward spiral
Lucas- interesting. Good in the air for some absurd reason
Caulker- Short term

I always maintained Lucas was decent in the air as long as it wasn't a header on the opposition goal. He's always been good at winning defensive headers.

I think the confidence of a player cannot be underestimated in his performance.

Look at Lovren. He was public enemy no 1 on these boards not too long ago and he did put in some truly abysmal performances, but look at how far he's come since Klopp took over.

For some reason, Sakho strikes me as a 'confidence' sort of player too. Not too sure about Illori though.

Remember how Carra first started out ? Multiple own goals, played out of position continuously and was hardly first choice but he was a fighter and he grew into his role as a leader eventually.

But he also had a leader in Hyppia in that defense to guide and teach him.

Who does Illori have to guide him ?

Tiago Ilori is hoping he’s forced his way into Jurgen Klopp’s long-term plans for the future at Liverpool.

The Portuguese defender, who returned from a loan spell at Aston Villa last month, was left crestfallen by Angelo Ogbonna’s late winner in the FA Cup replay against West Ham.

It was a bitter-sweet night for the 22-year-old centre-back, who impressed alongside Lucas Leiva after being handed his third senior appearance for the Reds.

The FA Cup gave Ilori the chance to finally kick-start his Liverpool career – some two-and-a-half years after his £7million move from Sporting Lisbon.

“I’ve had a few chances to play which is great,” he said.

“I always thought there could be a future here. That’s why I signed for Liverpool in the first place. I just try and work hard every day.

“Players get experience by playing. I played alongside Lucas and he didn’t look at me and think: ‘he’s not as experienced’ and I didn’t look at him and think: ‘he’s the most experienced player’.

“We all play together, we train together every day and we’re a team.

“There are a lot of good players at Liverpool for me to learn from. I just take it step by step.”

Liverpool were left to rue a string of missed chances with Ilori insisting defeat was cruel on Klopp’s side.

“There are always positives and I definitely think the way we played, the opportunities we made, the way we fought, they’re all positives,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“We didn’t get the result we think we deserved and the one we fought for, but that’s football.

“We worked hard, we managed to make some clear cut chances, but we didn’t make the right decisions at the right times.”

Can't see him ever making it, expect him to be shipped out in the summer. He's had one average game for us.

No he hasn't. He looked pretty confident and assured to me, certainly more accomplished than the more experienced bellends who caved in during the league games against West Ham. He's had a couple of decent outings now, must you always be so definitively negative?

One average game out of three makes him first choice material. I would say he's had one indifferent game , one average game and one above average game and for the reason I gave before is wholly understandable anyone that can't see that does not understand the game - it takes weeks of regular games to get anywhere near full fitness
