Following on from FFF's post:

I'm just surprised no one is considering the prospect & thinking about how we may bolster the squad to help stem the goals bleeding out of the side if he does.

It's an interesting scenario, spurs experience this season tells us we'll definitely be weaker, but we have a manager who seems to excel in bonding the players & getting the most out of them, unlike that shower of shite.

How do we rebuild given 70-80M?

How do we know we'll get that much? I doubt the figure set in his get-out clause is so high.

We don't of course. I just put a figure out there for the sake of debate. I think there was something in the gossip columns claiming a 70M fee so perhaps that's where it sprang from.

As for a replacement, we're extremely unlikely to get a like for like so no point going down that road. I remember reading (again probably in the gossip columns) that Reus could be tempted away from Dortmund (to Utd). Any chance he'd come to us?

I'd happily spend 40M or whatever on him.

As said in the other thread. His wife and family are very settled at Merseyside.
It was speculated that the release clause in his contract was dependant on CL qual or not.
If Real bid crazy money he could go but I think its probably 90/10 at the minute re not leaving/leaving.
He's spoken at length about CL footy at Anfield and we've gotten that now.
Real are also keen on either Aguero or Falcao. I can see them signing Falcao from his representatives. Doubt the Monaco stay will last much longer than a year.

Replacing him with 70 mill. Thats gonna be extremely hard. We'll have to set up the team a bit different and God knows what players to go after.

Just as an aside to the OP. Spurs are on course for the exact same points haul as last season so not weaker. The same.

We're in a relatively good position in the summer whatever happens. If he stays, that's excellent news, and we should still have about 30-40mill net to spend and a bit from the sales. If he goes, then we should have about 70mill on top of that I'd have thought. We're not losing a player from an area where we have zero options if he does go either, unlike when Torres went.

You'd think that if the following went he could raise an extra 20 million

Reina
Johnson
Aspaz
Assaidi
Suso

Er, not necessarily. Reus is good but not Suarez good, and I happen to think Pogba is quite overrated. Still very raw, and not worth the 50 million tag placed on him.

Well if he went to Madrid i'd be looking at signing Benzema as his direct replacement.

Suarez money:
30-35 mil on Benzema
25-30mil on Shaw
20mil on Kono

40mil put up by our owners:
8mil Masher
15mil Lallana
17mil left but i'm not sure we'd need to spend that.

You're right though - it is possible. Reminds me of the time when we sold Rushie to Juve and some of us wondered where our goals would come from. We soon found out when Digger, Aldo and Beardo arrived.

I wouldn't be surprised. I'd be gutted though, we'd have to be really clever with the money. A bird in the hand an all that.

Laughably the clowns at Real Madrid apparently view him as a risky signing who may sully their noble global image! They are allegedly sniffing around Aguerro.

If he does go fair enough, he contributed to a fantastic and memorable season and we get a monster payday. Cavani though - no thanks, Costa - yes please but no chance. I guess we revert to one striker and buy someone to rotate with Sturridge.

Spending more than 15M on a fullback would be incredibly stupid on our part.

Let someone else overpay for Shaw, Lallana, and Diego Costa.

There's more than the five transfer targets we've been linked to out there. No need to buy the first thing that looks good enough.

Spend the rest on sweets.

Oh, absolutely. It definitely wouldn't be my preference to see Suarez leave, and FWIW I'm confident Brendan will get a decent transfer kitty anyway.

I'd pay 20 mill for Shaw. Thats left back sorted for 10-12 years

I think people very quickly forget the number of teenagers who never fulfill their potential.

Other issue with overpaying for a fullback is that it's seen as a long term investment, as you say. So even if the player ends up not being good enough, they get forced into the team for far longer than they deserve.

The only fullbacks I would be willing to pay over 15M for are probably Alaba and Marcelo. Both of those are incredibly unlikely to happen. Maybe Coentrao, he's a more likely target.
