I know he's been getting some love in the match thread but I think he needs his own, no?

A while back I made a comparison to Yaya. What do people think?

That's funny - I was actually thinking "Yaya Toure - eat your heart out" last night.

The fact that with 15 minutes to go, he was the one pushing forward, pulling the strings and trying / entrusted to make things happen (didn't he have a shot on target that was blocked / saved as well?) says a lot about him. 20 years old, gallops up, shoves aside the captain, the future captain, the creative magician, the superstar-in-waiting and the returning savior, dictates play, and puts in the classiest touch of the game to salvage a tricky situation.

Yes, Yaya Toure - eat your heart out.

He needs a run of games in midfield where he plays 90 mins against decent opposition to see if he has the conditioning to handle it. He certainly looks a beast but bossing Bolton isn't exactly reason to call him out new missing piece in midfield. He has looked extremely promising though so I hope he gets that run to prove himself

Didn't watch the game last night. Did he play DM or the second CM?

I'm not very sure what his best position is going to be long term. Can he be the kind of goalscorer Yaya has been?

I made a Redondo comparison a while ago - I think I'll still stick with that.

He played RCB, then moved to the middle CB, then after they scored, he pushed further up in midfield. Bolton had lost Danns by then to a red card, and we were camped in their half, only needing to defend sporadic counter attacks, so we practically played with just 2 high CBs (Skrtel, Sakho) in the end with everyone else pushed into their half. Felt a bit like this to me when we were chasing the equalizer:

------- Skrtel ----- Sakho --------
--- Hend --- Can --- Gerrard ---
Borini ---- Coutinho ---- Moreno
------ Sturridge --- Sterling ------

Watching last night I thought he was very impressive. Tall, strong, very competitive, fast, uses both feet, strong shot (unlucky not to score) and played a great ball to put Sterling in showing great vision and a delicate touch.

A while ago I said with regard to Steven Gerrard's* departure ' The King is Dead, Long Live the King', maybe this lad's the new King in waiting'?

* by the way, I thought Steven looked lacklustre last night.

Last night you built up Coutinho because he 'bossed Bolton'

Jus' saying

Very apt comparison, I think its the way he runs with the ball which really makes it. Whenever I see he and Yaya running with the ball, they always look a little clumsy to me, however they both like freight trains and are never easily stopped. Unfortunately I can't ever see a midfield of he and Henderson working, and I don't think he's the right player to play where Coutinho or Lallana play as I like to see him bursting forward from deep, not trying the intricate play, so it'll be interesting to see how we fit him in going forward, for the immediate future though I'm very happy with him as one of the back three.

Emre looks to have the ability to be a top player, that ball to Sterlling was class.

Needs to do it over a longer period but he is looking a talent.

I would move him into midfield next season, let him bed in where he is for the remainder of this one.

I'm torn between him being the lynchpin of our midfield to him re-moulding the Libero role. Fantastic talent.

The bundesliga is a gold mine - we need to explore it more - draxler, meyer, etc.

Yeah I remember seeing Yaya in his early days and some people were unsure whether he would make it as a CB or a CM. He was a big powerful player even then so the tendency was to think CB, the same appears to be happening with Can. Long run I think he will move forward into midfield, he has a long way to go to reach the heights Yaya has in recent years but he certainly has all the tools in his locker, some players are just made for English football and hes one of them. I don't think we fully appreciated the sort of potential he had when we signed him partly cos he was a little unfit. He really is the kind of player we could build our midfield around for the next 10 years once he develops more consistency

Why are we talking about moving him out of the defence. It's no coincidence we've tightened right up since he moved there. And the way he's playing right now, I think we're actually getting more out of him from the back. Keep him where he is...but I've been telling you all that all along.

Yep, the Sakho, Skrtel and Can defence has been massively impressive, leave it be. In the future as Can continues to grow, he's going to be able to start dominating the midfield areas, at that point we need to have him playing there, but for now, keep him playing well and improving, as he clearly is as CB.

This year playing as a CB is really going to benefit him in the long run, he's gaining a massive understanding of the pressures of being a defender, and that knowledge will only help him better protect our centre backs and exploit oppositions defences when he plays in midfield in the future.

He's 'ok' at CB but I'd rather he plays in DM or CM. Think he'd really shine there

I'm a great believer in not "fixing" something that ain't broke, so I'd leave him where he is for the moment. In the medium to longer term I suspect he'll move forward into midfield, but I'm quite happy to wait and see.

His cool under pressure and his ability to make space for himself without just hoofing it up the line has allowed us to keep possession many times when we would otherwise have given it up. And his hair never moves out of place.

He made an error last night in the build up to that Gudjohnsen chance. Can lost his man, and went with a volley instead of using his head. I think we could have some nervy moments with him at centre back over a longer period...

However, he's looking great there on the whole, and while it ain't broke don't fix it. In the future, as he builds up his stamina and fitness (I'm told this is why he was never really trusted earlier on in midfield) we can look at moving him further forward. With all young players he'll have good runs of form and bad ones, but he looks very promising at the moment.

Very impressed with him now. He was excellent yesterday - very versatile, too, which could be invaluable in the future and I love his readiness to bring the ball out of defence - one of the things we've been missing for ages.

I give a lot of credit to Rodgers for crafting a spot for him in the team and believing in the big man by playing him in the back three. He has been a revelation and I don't even think that is going to be his position in the future but it has worked aces so far.
