According to the Sunday Mirror, Rafa Benitez has identified 22 year old Eljero Elia as the attacker to bring to Anfield in the January window. The news was first reported over in Germany a fortnight ago.

The paper reports his valuation at around £15M but Liverpool will, as usual, have to sell to buy. Dossena and Babel are the two players to be sacrificed, although it is doubtful whether the reds could even recoup £15M in total for those two players.

Both Dossena and Babel are on the fringes of their national squads and the reds will be keen to seal a permanent deal rather than a loan move for both players – who need regular football to ensure they go to the World Cup next summer.

Elia is currently playing as a forward for Hamburg in the Bundesliga and has now made 3 appearances for the Dutch national side.

Pavulechenko - as has already been mentioned on here of course - would also be a good buy, don't get why he's out of favour at Spurs, his record stands against any of their current strikers: 14 goals in 36 games at White Hart Lane. 82 in 167 for Spartak Moscow and his 15 strikes in 31 games for Russia.

Thats a very good record, I thought he had been a big lemon for spurs but 14 in 36 is nothing to be ashamed of, might be good budget option.

Sad though if we are having to look at Spurs rejects!

Also when it looks like we are in a race with them for 4th along with city its going to take some wheelin and dealin from Rafa to keep us in top 4 in coming seasons without new owners.

Pavulechenko also played well as the only striker for Russia in the Euro, didn't he?

He is a good shout for a Torres backup.

It is really imperative that whoever comes in January hits the ground running.
We can't afford anyone any time to get used to the Premiership, it could be too late by then anyway.
So for that reason alone, this would nor be a good idea

However, Elia is a very exciting prospect, and at first glance seems to be well suited to England - pace and skill in abundance. And from the little I've seen of him, he has a great attitude, keeps running, harrying and tracking back to defend - which could explain why Rafa's interested given his love for such players.

I don't mind as long as he is accompanied by a proven striker, preferably one with premiership experience.

We should never turn down the opportunity to sign good players whether it be January or the summer.

Ive only seen him against Scotland and he was superb. He was fast as fuck and a real thorn in the scottish side. His goal was composure personified rolling it under his feet and slotting it in. I appreciate it was only Scotland but they were fighting for their lives at Hampden Park with a real hostile crowd and to score that goal was impressive, particularly for a young lad.

Has anyone seen anymore of him?

Not too much, but you're right, he's pacy as fuck and seems to be brilliant at beating players.

Ahhhh, he's a winger apparently.
Whilst I agree we should sign good players if they are available, we must have a striker

A Heskey, Owen, Crouch, Keane or Anelka kind of experience?

I started a thread about him after watching him give Man City a torrid time for Steve Van Claren's FC Twente in the UEFA Cup last season. I was very impressed after watching him over the two legs and have tried to keep an eye out for him since.

As said, he's fucking lightning - although in terms of physique looked quite lightweight at the time - and had no trouble ghosting past players as if they weren't there. I can't quite remember if he's right footed or left footed (something tells me he's right-footed), but either way he seems a lot happier to get down the touchline than someone like Babel who cuts inside all the time.

Twente ended up getting knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Hamburg in the next round (if memory serves), so they must have been suitably impressed to go and sign him in the summer. And Jimmy created a thread recently after seeing him play well for Hamburg.

Premiership proven is indeed a desirable quality for someone that we might bring in during the January window yet at the same time that player is going to be known to Premiership managers, defenders etc already. Rosenthal is a good example of a decentish player making a tremendous impact during his mid season loan period with Liverpool and some of that impact can probably be attributed to him being an unknown. He wasn't anywhere near as effective in the following seasons after his purchase because other teams had worked out his style and his element of surprise had gone.

Who's he like? Lennon?

I've never seen him play, but I'm excited by the prospect of pace in our side.

I also think the Russian from Spurs would be a decent punt on a loan deal.

No it doesn't. It's worth noting that 9 of those 14 goals came in cup competitions - 6 in the Carling and 3 in the FA. If you count his league form alone (which is the clearest representation of a striker's ability at this level) then he has 5 goals in 32 appearances. A poor record and in no way comparable to Keane or Defoe. Crouch hasn't really hit it off at Spurs yet but he is a proven Premiership striker and obviously provides a 'different' option from the bench so again, it's no surprise that he's ahead in the pecking order.

The fact is, he's been VERY ordinary at Spurs.

It begs the question if we can afford him at Christmas why the jimminy fuck didnt we buy him in july before the season descended into being a clusterfuck due in no small part to having a shallow squad...

I will be amazed if we see either of them under the Chrstmas tree.

A new striker in the transfer window? Don't be ridiculous. We already have a striker. Why would we need a second?

I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.......................

Agent: Liverpool are not the only club sniffing around

Sport.co.uk can confirm that Liverpool are not the only English Premier League club looking at Hamburg wideman Eljero Elia. The Dutch winger, who has become a regular in the Dutch national set up, was linked with a move to Chelsea and Arsenal last summer, however over the weekend Rafa Benitez emerged as the front runner for a January move for the talented 22-year-old.

The agent of the former FC Twente winger Klauss Vink spoke exclusively to Sport.co.uk editor Nigel Brown admiting that a number of English clubs were interested in Elia, but that he was happy at Hamburg, having only just moved in the summer for £8.5 million after winning the Dutch Eredivisie. However, Vink did admit his next move will be to the English Premier League.

“There are a few English clubs sniffing around, so to speak, but he has only recently moved to Germany, and is happy at Hamburg. And, playing very well might I add. He has done well for his cclub, but also in Holland, for the national team, his performances have been impressive, particularly at the weekend.

“So, he is doing well. In regards to the speculation, there are no clear or concrete offers for his services. But, I think this is because he hasn't even had a half a year at Hamburg, and he is very happy.

“It is true, that in the future, or when he does decide to move, the English Premier League is his first choice. He would prefer his next move to be to English football, to a top club. People are asking questions of him, and he is honest, his next move will be to England, but when, who knows?

“There is big interest from Liverpool, but as far as I know, and I should know it, there are no concrete offers, just rumours.â€

There are no guarantees Bunny, but from experience players brought in from abroad can take the best part a season to settle, (having said that I can think of a young black Dutch future star with similar attributes who never did), whereas those with premiership experience don't, of course there are notable exceptions on both.
Still, this lad is a winger and not even a striker.

I'm guessing that by dire consequences you mean failing to qualify for the CL next season - that's our main goal right now in my eyes anyways.

And right now, the main thing that worries me as far as achieving that goal is how little we can rely on our midfield and defence to provide us with a solid platform from which to go and win a game. We shouldn't be shooting ourselves in the foot game after game, but we are. We shouldn't need three goals to get a win against cannon fodder like Birmingham at home, but that was the case the other week.

I'd quite happily forfeit a striker in January just to solve these fundamental problems we're facing right now.

I expect a Tony B article in the next couple of days denying the above link and stating that we might bid for Kevin fucking davies if we can free up the wages by selling Voronin and Dossena.

I don't agree Ken, I think we can muddle through in the midfield and at the back, but we are complete fucking eunuchs up front when Torres is out, and that was obvious, and exactly how it was, when he signed Keane. He took a flyer , or someone did anyway, letting Keane go and not bringing anyone in last January, to extend that situation through the summer was fucking unforgivable, it is the worst mistake we have made in my lifetime supporting the club anyway, and it is biting us in the arse.

To win matches you have to score goals, and we have to win matches

PS Yes I do refer to not qualifying

Elsewhere Palermo has revealed that it's now a three horse race for defender Simon Kjaer's signature.

United, the Chavs and us.
