Dominic Solanke being signed for £3M

Why would Chelsea sell to us if he is any good?

He rejected a contract but due to his age, it can't be a free transfer and a committee decide the appropriate fee, which has been estimated at £2m - £3m which is a drop in the ocean in current transfer market terms.

If he's leaving Chelsea I can only assume it'll be because of a lack of opportunity. If he's coming to us, I assume he's been told he'll stay here and play a fair bit, otherwise isn't he just swapping for essentially the same situation?

Reading some twitter comments, Chelsea fans seem genuinely gutted he's going to us. One or two even suggesting it could bite them on the arse De Bruyne/Lukaku style.

Chelsea sold us Sturridge, willingly.

Let's wait and see on this Solanke kid. Clearly Klopp sees a player he can mould. For 3m (which is paltry in today's market, especially for an England U21 international), it could be quite a steal. if he's further along in his development than Origi.

They said the same about Borini

If it doesnt work out we'll probably sell him for at least 10 mill +. Win win situation.

Bascombe said something about building a strong core in the U-23s.
Woodburn, Wilson, Solanke etc.
But thats more to placate the idiots who get upset when we don't sign big names.

There's no way Solanke is coming here unless he's been told he has a real chance of first team minutes.

Yep, I can't see too much downside to this either. Even if he turns into the next Patrick Bamford, we don't make much of a loss (if any).

Bamford isn't even average. But yeah, unless Solanke injures Coutinho, Mane etc in training there is little or no downside.

I think we sold Jerome Sinclair to Watford for £4 million? £3 million for Solanke shouldn't be too much of a gamble in comparison, I guess?

Knowing Klopp and his approach, I'm guessing he's been told he will get first team minutes if he proves himself and deserves it.
Given how many Acadamy players that have gotten first team minutes during Klopps tenure so far, then his chances will be good.

We already have solid strikers in the U23s - Woodburn, Toni Gomes, Brewster - and Ings will drop down to play with the youngsters again for a few months if we use the same plan as this season to get him back to sharpness and match fitness. We aren't really in the habit of making a big announcement on the official site when we're buying someone to beef up the U23s. Solanke might drop down to play in the U23s when he's not in the matchday squad, but make no mistake - this is a first team squad purchase (like Grujic last season).

Well, from the Wiki description of the deal, we didn't technically sell him. His contract lapsed, but because he was under 24 when he moved to Watford, we were due compensation and 4m was the agreed amount between the clubs.

Solanke's actually done Chelsea a little solid here by not going overseas instead. Chelsea would've received but a pittance in compensation instead in that scenario, like what happened to us when Rossiter moved to Rangers.
