But actual stats prove that a properly planned nutritional diet does make a massive difference to an athlete's performance. There's absolutely no doubt about it.

We're talking about overall stats, surely. Not about one specific athlete. That wouldn't even be up for discussion.
If we're talking english football, then look no further than Wenger. He completely changed the culture in england by enforcing a strict diet and training regime that took his side ahead of all others in the physical aspect. Now every single top flight team does it, as not one could survive with the old eat whatever the fuck you want culture.
Again, if we're talking about individuals rather than with a proper broad view, then we could argue all day about whether genius's like Best and Kenny would have been better players in this day and age, but look at the whole picture. It's obvious.
