Agger

Well I love him as a player obviously but if Rodgers sees him as 4th choice I hope we cash in come Jan. No need to keep him around for the odd game especially with areas of concern elsewhere.

In my opinion it would be a major mistake but Rodgers hopefully knows what he is doing.

I was initially also against us shipping Carroll and that certainly proved a good call so what do I know.

If Pique stays injury prone and Puyol is struggling to be fit again it wouldn't surprise me if they went for Agger. With a bid of about £8M

I'm thinking Skrtel might be the one to go, and we're just putting him in the shop window with these performances.

Skrtel's really as much of a form player as there is around, when he's on his game he's spectacular, but when he's off he's very poor, and averages out to being an inconsistent, but ultimately slightly above average player. If he keeps bossing it though, I can see us getting a very nice fee for him from a club in Europe looking to bring in reinforcements, especially since he isn't going to be cup tied.

The defenders seem easily wound up. Against Newcastle - and being outwitted by Alan Pardew is no badge of honour - there was a corner when all the attacking Newcastle players stood in the middle of the area as a bunch, and you would have thought this was the most brilliant tactical masterstroke by the way our defenders were seemingly paralysed by confusion.

I blame coaching when a number of players exhibit the same issues with situations.

Tbh, defensive coaching is still my biggest issue over Rodgers. We don't seem to learn from our mistakes at all at the back.

Agreed. Though that said, this defensive flaw from setpieces, the one where we look like we haven't got a clue who's marking who, has been going on since Rafa was here.

I think including agger is a risky stuff...when we are playing good with current combination. Why to change it..we will need Agger, no need to sell him right now. if we keep on playing with 3 defenders for quite a few number of matches, we must keep him.

I think Agger and Skrtel can be both frustrating any day...the ball playing ability of Agger is non questionable and Skrtel the defensive consistency which is surely more than Agger is also fantastic. So unless a massive offer comes for one of them, no need to sell anyone

I don't think he see's him as fourth choice at all. He just isn't dropping any of the other 3 as they have been outstanding which is fair enough.
Skrtel was supposed to be sold and since he got his chance against Utd has been superb.

why would we sell good players anyway? The idea is to build a title winning squad, not to keep dismantling it

Kolo Skrtel Sakho first choice CB's on current form..

Agger Bench.. He just got injured at the wrong time imho...

Kolo is world class

Lawro, sounding vaguely constructive, by his standards:

If I was Daniel Agger, I’d be getting a little bit concerned.

From being named vice-captain before the start of the season, now the Dane cannot force his way back into the starting line-up despite Liverpool operating with three centre-backs.

I would have Agger in on the left of the three centre-backs all day long.

That may be a bit harsh on Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel or Kolo Toure, depending on who drops out.

But Agger offers something different. He can bring the ball out of defence and commit people, and in a 3-4-1-2 formation you need at least one centre-back who is going to do that.

Agger’s problem is that he has proven to be injury prone and has the body of an office worker rather than a footballer.

If I was him, I’d be hammering the weights in the gym every day. Obviously, I’d be taking care with the dumbbells given that’s how he dropped out of the team in the first place!

That suggests he is aware of the problem, although the problem is that addressing the problem has meant the problem has become more of a problem.

I am a huge Agger fan and a strong Daniel Agger would be in the Liverpool team every single time for me.

I see some posts saying Agger should come in for Sakho but why? Sakho has been pretty immense.

I don't agree. Apart from the lads man-marking at the edge of the area, all our players stayed zonal, and in most of Rafa's 5-6 years with us, we had one of the best defensive records from set pieces. Something that was completely skewed by the media that were going crazy about this concept of defence they'd never heard of.

Lawro, sounding vaguely constructive, by his standards:

Not sure bulking up in the gym would help with his tendency to break bones and joints and damage cartilages all the time.
But I agree with Lawro. I'd have Agger in the team every time in a 3-5-2.

It wasn't a myth, it was a flaw that was apparent enough of the time to for it to be picked up on, like with most our sides under Rafa, seasons started slowly and things took time to implement, it seemed like every season the issue would be there, only for the system to eventually become second nature and the mistakes to become eradicated. That says more about the system to me, that it's either difficult to master, or we haven't had the players to do it. Suggesting it never happened is rewriting history a fair bit, United for one exposed it quite a few times from setpieces and balls in from wide areas. The O'Shea last minute goal at Anfield, the first Rafa game at Old Trafford, the battering we got when even Wes Brown stole in and buried a header. It happened, it might have been exaggerated sometimes, but it wasn't a notion that was grabbed out of thin air.

I tell you one thing, I wouldn't have Gerrard anywhere near a defensive corner, because he's the worst culprit of all, for losing players and turning his back on the ball.

Just seen the video where those Agger quotes comes from. They are out of context. Was a very hypothetical question.
He was positive about Liverpool at the start of the interview. Again mentions that its a huge cadeu to him that Barca have been interested.

"I came here to play football, i came here to fulfill my dream, and I’m stilling living in that dream"

[on how far he is in his dream] "I’m not saying it’s approaching its end, but I’ve had many experiences, many good experiences with LFC"
"I owe them alot for that."

[do you still have some small football related dreams] "Yes of course, if I didn’t have them, then maybe I should quit."
"Because setting goals is a part of being a football player."

[what are those dreams] "Here and now, I really want to play CL again with Liverpool."
"That is one of those things we are fighting for this season. It’s a hard fight, but I think we have the team to do it."

[On injuries] "I’ve had a career that has been up and down, many great experiences on field, and many negative experiences with injuries"
"When I think about, which I don’t do often, then it annoys me that I’ve had so many injuries."
"Because I feel, that when im 100 % then I have so much to offer."

[About Barca interest]"It was a cadeu to me that a club like that was interested. I still think that. To me they are the best football team"
"To be linked with that is a big thing. But other than I haven’t really thought about it."

[what could make you leave Liverpool, football wise?] "First and foremost if I don’t play. If the manager doesn’t think I’m good enough."
"Im here to play football. If I cant play I don’t want to be here anymore."

I know I'll be mercilessly shot down for this, but regardless I'm going to put it out there - Can Agger be deployed as a LB? He is left footed, can defend and does like to roam forward.

He doesn't mind roaming forward but Rodgers expects a bit more attack-wise and energy-wise from his left back.

Worse than Cissokho?

Yes.
Just take into consideration the work rate that's needed for our fullbacks in our system.
Agger would break down by half time.
He's trained all his life as a CB and that's the only position where he can play to his standards.
He was crap at left back under Hodge Podge.

Is there any real point in slagging him off for being shit in a position that isn't his? Hansen would have been shit at LB or RB. So would most of our best CBs. What next, 'Agger's shit playing in the hole behind the strikers'? It seems sometimes that people just want to be relentlessly negative about one of the classiest CBs we've had for about 30 years.

He makes mistakes in defense and sometimes he is too easy to beat 1on1. Some shitty clearing at times, yes.

That said he adds to our game when we are on the ball more than any other CB has for ages. Considering the current players for that position I would play him as much as possible.

Not sure bulking up in the gym would help with his tendency to break bones and joints and damage cartilages all the time.
But I agree with Lawro. I'd have Agger in the team every time in a 3-5-2.

As long as they work on the right muscles, in the right way, then it's actually the best way to prevent those injuries.

Is that in reply to me?
Where a few posts ago I said I'd like him to start every game?
I'd say Gerrard would be shit in goal if someone suggested playing him there. Would that be slagging him off?

No it's not in reply to you. It's just an observation that this thread is getting predictably silly if we start slagging the player off for not being good enough at left back.

Juniormember certainly isn't a culprit when it come to being overly negative about Agger, but I do wholeheartedly agree with gkmacca that when it comes to the majority of the most vocal posters on the site that is often the case.

I just mean criticise or praise him by all means for being a good or bad CB, but don't get diverted about how good or bad he is at LB. He's not an LB, he's never claimed to be an LB, so why witter on about it?

No one is really blasting him. Our defenders are much of a muchness, which is why the cries of despair throughout the match thread were unwarranted, as was the predictable scathing criticisms of Skrtel in retaliation.

Because someone legitimately asked whether he could do a job at LB and people are giving a view.
