Xabi Alonso irreplaceable

Alvaro Arbeloa has warned that Liverpool would be losing an irreplaceable cog if Xabi Alonso is allowed to leave.

Rafa Benitez has been unequivocal on Alonso’s future despite continued overtures from Madrid, maintaining that the player is not up for sale.

Despite missing out on Gareth Barry, speculation persists that Benitez might yet allow Alonso to leave – a decision Arbeloa feels would be folly.

"I hope he can repeat the successes of the past," he said. "He is our key player. The whole world knows it. This year for me has been the best player for Liverpool, the most consistent.

"He is our key player, who makes us play and has improved us a lot, much more aggressive defensively. He is a very complete player."

On a personal level, Arbeloa remained adamant that he has no intentions of leaving Anfield.

"I am currently very happy at Liverpool, but it's true that I had very good years in Madrid,†added the Spain international. “At the moment I'm very happy here in England, I hope to continue there.â€

Hear, hear.

We should be handing Xabi a bumper new contract, not contemplating selling him

The situation is very clear. Madrid have not made a bid yet for Alonso and if they do and for the right amount of money, Alonso will go.

What Rafael has done over the weeks and said we're not selling Alonso is because he don't want supporters to accuse him of showing Alonso the door. Having said that, Alonso is definitely going to Madrid if they bid because he has got enough of the shit about Rafael whoring him to Juve last season.

Arbeloa is not shit. He's a decent player and has played well this season. We need better than him though. Srna can do well there.

Now, see, that's just silly.

You know what, glock? I'm beginning to think that you DON'T really have a weekly dinner with the manager of Liverpool Football Club.

Srna to play at right back. Kuyt right midfield.

i reckon the 3 of them would rotate well. srna could start either right mid or right back. a bit like how riise was used on the left earlier, obviously srna has more about him.

it'd also solve our second striker issue with dirk being able to play upfront - didn't most of his goals come from that position this year?

see if we are strapped for cash srna and a really good left winger would be an excellent summer.

Yup agree with you there. Rafael like versatile players.

Keegan was meant to be irreplaceable...

Shankly was meant to be irreplaceable...
What's your point?

It's not the end of the world if Xabi Alonso leaves Anfield, granted, but the best sides aim to keep to best players at the club. Xabi falls into that criteria - and having to suitably replace him will firstly be immensely difficult, and secondly will delay our capabilities of landing our more pressing targets.

I find it strange anyone can talk about Xabi's potential departure so casually.

My point is as good as he is, he's not irreplacable. The league (imo) won't be won or lost based on if we have alonso or not.

Based on what?

It's clear he was one of our key performers in a season where we were close to lifting the title.

Removing such a key component represents an unnecessary risk.

its hard to argue that when xabi plays well we seem to do much better in the league.
True.. He keeps the ball moving better in the middle of the park, with first time passes and a good footballing brain, although he's slow he keeps our play ticking over.

speed/pace is almost a non issue at home.

I agree with everything Arby said. Xabi is so key to us, we actually play better when Xabi is in the team, our passing is more fluid and we keep the ball much better. After Torres, Gerrard and Reina is Xabi as our most important player in my opinion.

I still don't get why Arbeloa gets a lot of stick.

We paid the same for him as we did for Gabriel Paletta.

Arbeloa is a good player who had a bad run of form, probably.

We talk about cover at RB and talk about names like Srna and Glen Johnson; but are we that short of quality at RB that we need to spend another 10-12 million there?

Arbeloa's suffering this summer because he started the season very well but ended on a massive low - he raised expectations then for whatever reason - probably tiredness and fatigue - he couldn't maintain it.

He's a good footballer and has been a great signing by Benitez, but we probably could do better and we need to add cover anyway. The only question is whether it's worth pushing the boat out to land Johnson or saving our money for someone cheaper and put our wad of cash into replacing Riera.
