Riise talking so highly about Rafa? That's odd considering how he ended his career here.

I'm not sure it is really. We improved to the point where we needed a better LB - though we haven't actually had one since JAR left, albeit Insua could become that player - and he's enough of a professional to know that. He had a regular place in the side up till then, besides which (IMO, and clearly in his too, judging by what he said to Aquilani) Rafa helped him become a better defender than he had been previously.

JAR, unlike Murphy, is not bitter.

Exactly. Well he's not bitter anyway, neither is Murphy though, he was just upset when he left.
I never really understood the split opinion toward Riise either, I know he was one footed, but he sweated blood and gave his all for the shirt, scored some of the best goals I've seen us score and 'generally' gave a good solid and reliable performance.

Johnny Rockets' real problem was that his ideal position would have been wing-back, but we haven't played that way since Uncle Roy's time. For a straightforward LB in a back four, JAR's defensive play has never been out of the top drawer. Time after time for us he'd get himself stranded far upfield, and we'd have suffered a sod of a lot more through that if we hadn't had a CB as accomplished as Sami Hyypia to cover for him. When he WAS in position, he mistimed too many tackles. Rafa and his coaches improved JAR's defending a fair bit, but teams were still targeting his defensive weaknesses right to the end of his time with LFC.
That said, some of the stick he shipped then and subsequently was wildly OTT. His attitude was invariably spot on, he worked like a Trojan at his game and, as you say, some of his goals were spectacular. He was a top servant of the club and these latest quotes from him are entirely in character. I thought it was right to replace him when we did, but I still miss the guy.
Johnny Rockets YNWA.
