Deadly would be wasted on the right of a midfield four behind two strikers though. He'd huff and puff his way through a lot of running, but to little effect. I'd much prefer us to stick to the 4-2-3-1 even with Alonso gone.

I'm not so sure JJ.
I watched last seasons review DVD and Kuyt has pretty much transformed his game to the point where he does operate as a proper wide man.
I'm not suggesting we change our formation on the base of this, but he would be able to perform perform in a four man midfield.

I'm still astonished that a player expected to be only fit in 2 months can pass a 2-day medical.
I'm astonished that Rafa thinks we are strong enough to last 2 months without a top midfielder ahead of Masher and still be in the title hunt. Maybe a sign we are not yet finished in the transfer market. David Silva in at #10 and Gerrard dropping back until Aquilani is fit ?

----------------Kuyt---Torres
---Riera----Gerrard--Mascherano---Yossi
---Insua---Carragher--Agger-----Johnson
----------------------Riena

That's still a team which should overcome Spurs and others. I don't understand the panic.

I know Alonso was key for us but we've won a lot of games without him. If Benitez feels Aquilani is the right man then it's worth the 4-8 week wait, he was our number one target after all.

Stu, you're right that Kuyt starts the game, and a good few moves during the game, wide on the right. However, in the 4-2-3-1 he's forever coming in off that wing to add to our threat in the middle and has the space to do so (which TBH his somewhat patchy close control sometimes needs - that's why he hasn't really cut it as an out-and-out striker for us). By contrast, in a 4-4-2 he'd be stuck out wide for longer periods, playing predominantly as a provider. IMO that would reduce his effectiveness big time.

Other alternative is Kuyt up top with Nando and Yossi on the wing - cutting in like always with Johnson overlapping to provide width.
Another alternative is to put Torres as a CB, granted he won't be able to chip in with as many goals from there, but we'll get more goals on corners if he replaces Skrtl/Agger, and Kuyt would be accomodated.
Tee hee.

i like the solution where lucas plays as little as possible but in all honesty this is his opportunity in his 3rd season to deliver or fail.

rafa must see something in aquaman to spend 20 million and not really have the lad upto speed until xmas.

there must have been plenty of other players out there who could have started next week but its clear this lad was 1st choice because of the speed in which we moved to buy him.

He doesnt or at least i would be very surprised if he does, Chelsea should be favourites. Sadly the wallet is most probably empty.

I am pissed off but im not sure im entitled to feel so, I always fall into the trap of being too forthright and rarely take a step back to see if im just venting rather than thinking properly, i still feel pissed off but maybe, maybe i dont need to be.

If you look at it positively we've got great money for a want away player and replaced with a more attacking midfielder (albeit a temporarily crocked one) we have replaced a reasonable foreign RB with a potentially much better english player, and we have also brought in a back up striker in Voronin who may well be better prepared to play this time round, our first eleven is pretty fucking sensational and we should definitely have a good shout next time out.

That would be a valid way of looking at it though not what many of us would have hoped for, i didn't at least.

You could also say the owners are doing much better after a fucking atrocious start, and thats probably fair too, they have given the manager more power to do as he needs to do without interference and have stopped putting their foot in their mouths, primarily by not talking as much. Although they completely lied it seems they are trying at least to make a go of it, improving off field incomes etc. Personally im not sure if i trust them and dispute that they have been good for us all in all, the loans say otherwise, I need to see a big shiny new stadium before I will say that anyway, but at the minute im enjoying their silence which is more than i could say last year.

All of this said I was really really REALLY hoping for a new attacking player and that is dissapointing whatever way you look at it.

I think it's gonna be Gerrard and Mascherano in midfield. Riera on the left, Silva in the middle, Kuyt on the right, Torres up front.

We will sign Silva.

I hope I am lucky too mate...
Oncy if we do end up with that squad, and with Aquilani playing say 15-20 league games, I think the league is gonna come home.

Everyone is assuming that our defense will be ok. It's always the asumption that if we just score in those games where we failed last season we'll be ok but our defense has to have another amazing season this season too and Carragher's a year older.

Agger and Skrtl are both very good players, but not one of them has demonstrated the leadership required to instruct the defense in a liverpool shirt. Carragher makes both look better, and I think he'll have a good season, but he won't be able to play quite as many games.

You know that'll never happen. A few of those CL group games would be paying for your theoretical Silva purchase.

I reckon we're gonna ship some shit goals this season with our new look back four.

I'm not assuming anything about Insua or Agger's current defensive abilities.

Barca have reportedly had a 20m euro bid rejected by valencia for Mata. Should they sign him Silva will be going nowhere.

There's certainly a risk there. I have little doubt that Insua is a better defender than Dossena (hell's teeth, I reckon I was in my prime) but I have plenty that Agger's defending is any better than Skrtel's, and incidentally Arbeloa was unquestionably better defensively than Johnson during his time with us.

What gives me hope is the way we finished last season after the Real tie, for two reasons. For one thing, that will have given everyone a generous helping of confidence and, for another, Rafa now knows what we can do if we consistently attack teams (I feel sure that's why he bought a RB as attack-minded as Johnson). Yes, we have a big hole to fill in Alonso's absence, but I'm vastly more confident that we can do it than I would have been this time last season.

good point, I remember a big game last season, chelsea fist leg in the CL?? when we reall seemed to lack leadership and a few people looked rudderless.

4 maybe? He's still not listed on the official.

I wrekon it will be 18.. and Kuyt will move to 7

Kuyt should be awarded with the no. 7 shirt... he is the only player in the last 10 years who is worthy of that shirt in my opinion...

I've seen this bandied around on the other thread.

He's just had one great season, but let's not get carried away eh? And besides, he's not really the type of player for the No.7 shirt.

Funnily enough, mark, until we ourselves blew a hole in the old shirt numbering system in the early 1970s and everybody else followed suit, no.7 was always the number worn by any team's right winger and Deadly more or less plays there in our side.

In any case, while I agree about not getting carried away over one good season, I can't actually think of a better candidate in our squad at the moment. Of course, if there's a big signing still to come....

Yeah fair enough, I just always envisage it as a Kenny player, big burden though. But I agree, out of our attackers there's no one more fitting, I just still think of him as a work-hard centre forward.
