Reina 6 - Someone like De Gea would have almost certainly parried Benteke's shot. Parly redeemed himself by a big save from Agbonlahor shot from point-blank range (to be fair, he was fortunate the shot was straight at him - but props for standing his ground and "making himself big").

Johnson 7 - Back to "good" Johnson - sharp and creative throughout. Excellent no-look pass for an early Suarez chance in the 1st half and a similar pass that led to the penalty. Unlucky to hit the post.

Carra 6.5 - Struggled with Benteke and Agbolahor's pace at times, but you can see how crucial experience is for a defender. He knew how to place his body in front of a much pacer forward and how strong and how long to pull on somebody's shirt before ref has a chance to notice.

Agger 8 - OK in the 1st half, excellent in the 2nd. I don't know what adjustments he made at half time, but he made Benteke look very ordinary after the break and won every challenge and physical battle. I'm impressed.

Enrique 6.5 - Good defending in the 1st half and generally a good performance. But he seemed to get tired towards to the end and should have been subbed if we had a decent LB option on the bench, which we don't.

Lucas 6 - I thought his passing was OK and he made a few good tackles. But like others have noted, behind the play a lot of the time and gave away unnecessary free-kicks.

Henderson 7 - He was running harder than any other player on the pitch today. Cool-headed finish for the goal - also need to give him credit for the ambitious run that led to the goal in the first place.

Gerrard 8.5 - Yeah, captain's performance.

Coutinho 8 - He is becoming the creative fulcrum of the team. Undroppable on this form. Every pass is filled with purpose and I also loved his movement before the 1 on 1 chance - very smart to stay onside (Villa defender was completely fooled).

Downing 6 - I'm afraid Stewie is just not a mentally strong player. A little extra pressure in the form of playing against his former team and being gently booed for home fans and he loses all edge and creativity.

Suarez 7 - When Luis is tired, it shows not in diminished effort on the pitch (because he always gives 110%, he can't play any other way), but in missed chances. So it was yesterday, but he never let his head drop. Sublimely timed through ball for Coutinho and won a stonewall penalty by fooling a defender with his quick turn. You gotta love Luis, even on days like these.

Sterling n/a - Hope cameo appearances like these will help him rebuild his confidence.

Spot on that Rurik. Was impressed with how Agger got himself into the game in the 2nd half

Pretty much agree with Rurik except :

Reina (6.5) - I don't think many keepers in the world could have stopped that goal.

Agger (6) - I thought he was shite for most of the match. Very poorly positioned at times and TBH I wish he'd stop those runs up to the opposition's 18 yd box, because he's shite at shooting anyway, as it leaves us exposed on breakaways. He should only be up there for set pieces. A couple of good tackles is pretty pointless if other mistakes can/do lead to goals/opportunities.

Henderson (6) - I know most won't agree with this. Headless chicken running doesn't serve us too well, I noticed that his 'pressing' was half-arsed and rarely did he get in their faces .. or do anything constructive when he was in possession. Well taken goal.

George Burley made a good point at half-time. Our pressing all over the pitch was half-hearted giving them far too much space to work in. In the 15-20 mins right after HT we took that pressing to another level, which forced mistake after mistake and we could easily have scored 4/5 goals not 2 in that period.

Sorry, forgot that we dont measure progress and developmemt during the season.
It shows that after our opening 5 games, 2D 3L, we've been on track with a top 4 finish.

You can stick your negative comments about an entire season after conceding one goal up your arse.

Liverpool start winning when there's fuck all to play for shocka.

In all seriousness, yes there has been a great improvement in our attacking play but the defence and defensive midfield has gone backwards so we're sort of still in the same place.

Not really. Currently joint 2nd highest scorers in the league, now 12 goals ahead of our total PL goals for last season, would sort of say we are on the right track. Of course there are now more issues in defence but a couple of quality CBs in the Summer will hopefully help as we are only 2 to 8 goals (conceded) behind our main rivals in comparison.

If you take our horrendous start to the season into consideration we are on the right track. A few Summer tweaks required !

We conceded 1,05 goals pr game last season vs 1,29 so far this season.

Considering the change to a new system and focus on developing the attacking part of the game its not horrendous. It needs improving if we're going to get anywhere mind. Rodgers got a job on his hands to sort it out.

And considering our two centrebacks that played so well last year went so shit and we have been relying on Carra, and our goalie went off its fucking amazing

Worst result of the season for me, they are a really poor side and the smashed us at Anfield, think it was a wake up call for Rodgers that resulted in Coutinho and Sturridge signing

They're a very strange side. I don't think they're like other teams down in that position - they don't just look hopeless all over the pitch - there's a peculiar gap between their midfield and forwards, but on their day they can look like a fairly promising young team. Personally I thought the defeats against the more predictable teams were worse.

Not really. Currently joint 2nd highest scorers in the league, 7 goals ahead of the same stage as last season (prior to last night)...

Some mistake in that stat line I think?

We'd scored 57 goals in 30 games prior to the victory over Villa. "7 goals ahead of the same stage as last season" would mean we scored 50 goals in 30 games last season. However, we only scored 47 league goals the whole of last season.

Bloody commentators can't even get their facts straight 😉

Cheers - amended !

I agree with this. Benteke couldn't have hit the ball any quicker, which gave Reina no time to position himself.

Even if it was "straight at him" he has to be credited with what was a fantastic save. Haters gonna hate and all that.

Henderson is one of the players of the Season for me. He looks like a very different player than to last Season.

Some of the energy that's on display from him is Gerrard-esque at times. I bet ol' Steve has had some influence on him.

For me he's the only central midfielder that has earned his spot next Season along Gerrard.

I agree, although maybe not quite as strongly, but Henderson has a big future with us, i hope hes here for long time.

What a load of bollocks, Henderson never plays half arsed, hes one of the hardest workers in the team.

Villa expose Liverpool's weaknesses.

Example of analysis:

Agbonlahor's early chance. First thing to notice is that Carragher and Johnson are left to mark 3 men in the center. The ball has been played between Coutinho & Henderson to Lowton. However, Enrique's body shape is 'defensive', he is backing off when clearly Lowton's body shape is set up for a cross. He has backed off the man and made no attempt to close down the cross. In the end, Agbonlahor shots straight at Reina. Liverpool were lucky in this 2 v 3 situation that the ball rebounded to Carragher to clear for a corner and not one of the Villa strikers.

I enjoyed that read mate.

Dunno if you're interested, but if you are I feel a thread like that here would get some responses & possibly a few differing opinions or reasons why.

Did anyone else find Luis a bit off in this one?

I was actually a bit relieved to hear that Rodgers thought Surez was shattered after his return from international duty. It's the first time I've been reminded of the sulk since Torres left. A couple of remonstrations with Johnson (who was clearly non-plussed), one with Coutinho, another with Hendo; Suarez looked like he wasn't happy to be there for the first time since he arrived.

Add to that the two misses and hard to really understand why he's being rated so highly. I know he carries threat as he's shown what he can do but he didn't contribute much of anything.

He celebrated the goals like crazy. I think it was more down to tiredness and being shattered from traveling.
His finishing is usually the first thing that goes when he's mentally tired. Worked his socks off as usual and I didnt even notice the other incidents tbh.

Like I said before by his own standards he was bit off yesterday, played well though and got us a penalty.

How many penalties has he actually won this season?

Found the answer myself:

5 - Luis Suarez has won more penalties than any other Premier League player this season. Tricky.

Agger's in the wrong position. AGAIN.

Off the top of my head we've conceded three goals this season from exactly the same lazy/naive/dumb positioning on his part; Man City away, Sunderland away, and this one. That's not even beginning to count the amount of times he's got monstered by any old centre forward throughout the year.

On that image above, he should be in a direct line between Reina and the ball or closer to his CB partner (same for the goal too by the way). He isn't. He never is. It's where Terry positions himself, in fact it's where any decent centre back positions himself. Not our Daniel.
