Alberto Aquilani: The midfielder made just nine starts for Liverpool before being shipped out on-loan
Brendan Rodgers has left the door open for a return to the Liverpool first team for forgotten man Alberto Aquilani.
The Italian arrived in a blaze of publicity in 2009 for a fee of £20m while still recovering from surgery on an ankle injury.
But the 28-year-old failed to settle on Merseyside, making just 18 appearances in total for Liverpool

- half of which were as a substitute.

As a result the talented midfielder has spent the last two seasons on-loan in his homeland of Italy with Juventus

and the AC Milan.

But Rodgers is willing to wipe the slate clean after he featured in Liverpool's friendly defeat to former clubRoma

and offer the injury-jinxed midfielder a fresh start at the club.

"I need to have a close look at Alberto," said Rodgers. "It's been difficult for him during his time in England, and this is probably the first period where he's felt happy, according to him, and he's working.
"I need to assess, and that's what I'm doing at the moment. Come the beginning of the season I hope to have a group that I'd like to go forward with on our journey this season.
"I'm assessing all the players, young and senior, at the moment."

Probably just transfer postering, but still, interesting, there is a good player in there somewhere.

  • plays well until christmas.
  • club gives him a new deal to protect their investment, the likes of which no club in Italy would dream of.
  • feigns injury and gets loaned out for the next three years where we pay most of his wages.

I thought he was good last night and against Toronto.
I still dont think he wants to be here or that Mr Rodgers really wants him.
That said nobody in our team embodies the quick pass and move game more than him. He loves a wall pass, a one two, a quick sliderule. If he stays, which is unlikely, and stays fit, which is unlikely, I think hes a player Mr Rodgers would really like.

Watch that clip above there and apart from one or two long range passes the simplicity of his play was great. Get it. Give it. Look for it back.

Not many players in our squad has the vision and the skill to play a pass like the one he does at 0.35.

I disagree. Adam, Gerrard, Downing, Suso, Bellamy, Shelvey and Agger could.
It doesnt have to be about him being the 'best' modo just about him doing a good job, being an option and working hard.
If he does he has a chance.

Alberto Aquilani wants to prove himself at Liverpool
By Chris Bevan BBC Sport - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18995512?

Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani says he is puzzled by his past treatment at Anfield but is hopeful of proving himself to Brendan Rodgers.
Aquilani, 28, is back with the Reds after two seasons in Italy on loan.

"How can you pay £20m for a player and this player is never taken into consideration?" he told BBC Sport.

"I never asked to leave but I was always pushed by the club. I am here and I would like to play for Liverpool but it doesn't depend only on me."

Aquilani played the first half of Liverpool's friendly defeat by his former club Roma in Boston on Wednesday, and new manager Rodgers said afterwards that he is still considering whether he has a future at the club.

But the Italian international playmaker, who has two years left on his contract and is keen to commit his future to the club, says his initial meetings with Rodgers have been encouraging.
Brendan Rodgers on Aquilani's future at Anfield

"I had a very good talk with Brendan where we were able to share our thoughts and it was a very positive chat," Aquilani explained. "I like his footballing philosophy and I like the mentality he has because it matches my own skills."

Aquilani was signed by Rafa Benitez but has not played a competitive game for the club since Benitez's departure in the summer of 2010.

Under Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, he was sent on season-long loans to Juventus and AC Milan, and says it has been frustrating not to be able to prove to Liverpool fans he can make an impact in England.

"The situation changed after Benitez left," Aquliani added. "In past years, I felt forced out. I never asked to go on loan but they made it clear it was better for me to go.

"I think Liverpool people have to know that I have never said I wanted to leave the city because my family and I were not happy here. This is not true.

"I cannot say I have unfinished business in English football because I really never played but, the little I did, I believe I was able to show to Liverpool fans that I have quality and that I could have helped the team."

------------------------------------

Now can we all just put this to rest.
I was right all along and you all treated him like dirt. (You know who you are)

Modo are you sure you're right?

I mean, Hitler probably thought himself as a swell guy who never got the chance to prove himself too. Doesn't mean he's not a cunt.

Why shouldn't I believe him?
Even Comolli came out and said that they wanted him out last season.

If this was his agent talking I'd be a bit unsure about it as well.

Let me get this right.

No other club wants to pay his wages and what Liverpool want in a transfer. He has nowhere to go. He wants to play football. He wants to be paid a vast fortune. He recognises that he hasn't performed in the PL so why on earth would he say anything other than he loves it and Liverpool, his family loves it at Liverpool and to prove it he'll get down on bended knees in front of Brendan?

Yup ... me too, but be humble ... far better quality than cocky.

Yeah i agree. Being humble is so much more dignified. I love being humble, i'm dead good at it. In fact I'm the most humblest person ever.

I would fucking love to sit with Modo for 90 minutes of a match and actually explain to him why this chump is not good enough.

I knew there'd be a YouTube comp. So fucking predictable.

Do you think there would be a youtube comp of him being inadequate?

Hmm. I like Aquaman.
Can't understand why a lot of you lot don't want him in the squad.
Has a very good short passing game, has the vision to find players in tight areas and can also provide some killer long balls.
It's way better for us to have him available for games than some of the other shite we have.
Hope he stays.

I hope he stays. I just don't think he will.

People Don't like someone bleating on about the same player over and over again.

If it gets to September 1st and hes still here, he'll be my favourite player again
🙂
After Wonderman of course.

Lucas looks like he has a lot of work to do before he looks like the 'Wonderman' player of last autumn.
