World Cup 2010: Spain's Iker Casillas says official ball is 'like a beachball'
Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas said the official World Cup ball is better suited to the beach than to the finals in South Africa after his side's 3-2 warm-up win against Saudi Arabia.

Unhappy: Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas says the official World Cup ball is 'like a beachball' Photo: GETTY IMAGES
"It's a bit like a beachball," the Spain captain said on Sunday. "Now it isn't only the goalkeepers (complaining), it is the outfield players as well. It's sad that a competition as important as a World Cup has an element as vital as the ball with such abysmal characteristics."
Midfielder Xavi said: "It's a question of getting used to it but in truth it does move around a lot."
Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon joined the chorus of disapproval.
"The new model is absolutely inadequate and I believe it is shameful to play such an important competition, where so many champions are taking part, with a ball like that," the 2006 World Cup winner said.
The Adidas World Cup ball, whose name 'Jabulani' means 'to celebrate' in the Zulu language, was billed as the first perfectly round ball and the most accurate yet when it was unveiled by Fifa.
New balls for major tournaments always make players uneasy and there has been plenty of anger this time with the World Cup due to kick off on June 11.
Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar has said the ball is "terrible, horrible" and like one purchased in a supermarket, while Italy striker Giampaolo Pazzini said it was a "disaster" for both goalkeepers and forwards because it is so light.

If you are used to playing with one thing, and then it changes, it may well affect your performance. Everyone seems to be struggling with it, apart from the Germans who have been using this ball all season in the Bundesliga.
A professional golfer would tell you changingfrom Titliest to Nike balls would ruin his game. As would any fast bowler who was getting thrashed around the park when they introduced the White ball in cricket.

Fact.
The Argies have been using it there too.

Apparently our FA turned down the option of using it due to other commercial commitments. That even extended to using it as a practice ball for England get togethers. Twats.

Cant we declare this WC a non-event? Start again with a Mitre Delta, or an Adidas Tango?

I'm pissed off, the ball is clearly an issue.

Gianluigi ‘Gigi’ Buffon (goalkeeper, Italy):

“The ball is a problem. You can’t anticipate which direction it is going to go in. It is difficult for defenders to deal with and you can’t take your eye off the ball until the very last second.â€

Luis Fabiano (forward, Brazil):

“It’s very weird. All of a sudden it changes trajectory on you. It’s like it doesn’t want to be kicked. It’s incredible, it’s like someone is guiding it. You are going to kick it and it moves out of the way. I think it’s supernatural, it’s very bad.â€

Julio Cesar (goalkeeper, Brazil):

“It’s terrible… like a ball you’d buy in a supermarket.â€

Ps mitre delta is the best ball ever.
Innit. They even did an all surface version that was blatantly designed for heads & volleys on the school car park. It lasted fucking months.

The last three world cups have all had massive criticism of the ball. There is no evidence to support them being erratic. As the tournament progressed, and the poorer teams are left behind, people got absorbed, and you heard less about the ball, and more about the games.

So the world cup hasn't really got cooking yet... so what. I've seen a fair few teams that just aren't gelling. You can't seriously not know what a team looks like when it lacks cohesion and misses passes can you, after this season?
Matchball. Just for 2 weeks (we all hated it). Pretty much the same as any bunch of lads who play on a weekend.

The lad who brought the ball took it for his midweek 5-a-side mates to use and they sacked it off after one game. It's like a garage ball genuinely. It's a kids ball.

Were now on this years champions league ball which is a beauty (and yes it's the 70 quid jobbie), flies true but stillwith bounce.

I have an image in my head of Blatter and co sitting in the stands with a remote control.

Heh, was gonna start a thread about this actually (or maybe not a thread, just a post, but anyway).

Somebody brought two of them there balls to training last Thurs night, and we had a kick around with them. They are noticeably different. The biggest difference everyone noted was how long they stay in the fucking air. The goalkeepers were botting the things miles, and even when we started knocking them about amongst each other they were floating through the air significantly longer than usual.

I didn't notice much of a difference when shooting. The keepers though said they were all over the place, but then they always do.

Anyway, thats about it, and I agree with Oncy. Why make things difficult foer the best players in the World to play? Shouldn't it be the opposite?
I don't know anyone who's played with it who likes it. It's far too poingy.

If Ronaldo hits the majority of his free kicks either:

a) into the wall
b) into orbit

then we know the ball is no different to any other

Ha, to be fair he didn't say how high.

Maybe it's not high enough at the coast and too high in Jnb, Pta 🙂

The real issue is quite obviously the wind being generated from the vuvuzelas which is clearly changing the attitude and direction of the ball. It's like a massive game of blow football. Parp !

This must be the worst ball ever! There isn´t a player who get´s nervous when the ball comes flying...except ze germans. Goals per game is a disaster and that could be due to nervous/catious players.

This far I´m really disappointed with the WC.
