Hodgson is facing an injury crisis ahead of the crunch clashes with Moldova and Ukraine as the Three Lions look to take control of Group H.
He has seen Wayne Rooney, Glen Johnson and Phil Jones all pull out of the squad after getting crocked at the weekend.
Rooney suffered a gashed head in training in a collision with Manchester United team-mate Jones and will be sidelined for three weeks.
His absence was supposed to pave the way for Liverpool star Sturridge to replace him but the in-form striker is battling a thigh problem.
Sturridge played through the pain barrier and scored the winner in Sunday’s 1-0 win over United but is understood to have made the injury worse.
Hodgson has just four forwards to choose from and is desperate for Sturridge to face minnows Moldova at Wembley on Friday night.
Roy Hodgson is desperate for more choices for the crucial qualifiers
Sturridge, 24, is the hottest striker in the Premier League on current form, with 11 goals in his last nine outings – and five in four this season.
He joined the rest of the squad at St George’s Park yesterday but Starsport understands he did not take part in full training.
The Liverpool hitman will have almost constant treatment in a bid to be fit and Hodgson faces an anxious wait to see how he responds.

I hope we ban him from entering Anfield, if he gets Sturridge injured again.
Brendan needs to have a talk with Sturridge.
