Roy Hodgson: Get Daniel Sturridge fit for England

ROY HODGSON has ordered his medical staff to work round the clock in a bid to get Daniel Sturridge fit for England’s crucial World Cup qualifiers.

By Jeremy Cross/Published 3rd September 2013

Hodgson is facing an injury crisis ahead of the crunch clashes with Moldova and Ukraine as the Three Lions look to take control of Group H.

He has seen Wayne Rooney, Glen Johnson and Phil Jones all pull out of the squad after getting crocked at the weekend.

Rooney suffered a gashed head in training in a collision with Manchester United team-mate Jones and will be sidelined for three weeks.

His absence was supposed to pave the way for Liverpool star Sturridge to replace him but the in-form striker is battling a thigh problem.

Sturridge played through the pain barrier and scored the winner in Sunday’s 1-0 win over United but is understood to have made the injury worse.

Hodgson has just four forwards to choose from and is desperate for Sturridge to face minnows Moldova at Wembley on Friday night.

Sturridge, 24, is the hottest striker in the Premier League on current form, with 11 goals in his last nine outings – and five in four this season.

He joined the rest of the squad at St George’s Park yesterday but Starsport understands he did not take part in full training.
The Liverpool hitman will have almost constant treatment in a bid to be fit and Hodgson faces an anxious wait to see how he responds.

I hope we ban him from entering Anfield, if he gets Sturridge injured again.
Brendan needs to have a talk with Sturridge.

Frustrating to say the least as he is on fire at the moment.

I wish we were like some managers who would simply say

'sorry he's not fit' and let him recover for Swansea.

What an idiot. Gashed head versus thigh injury.... Hmmm. Let's work on the one with the leg problem, seems inconsequential in football.

This is another area where we need to show some balls. He's injured, club before country.

Fuck off England. Ferguson would never have allowed him to join the squad. Show some more bollocks LFC, tell them they're injured and that's that.

Fuck me Rooney's out with a cut on the head. The fucking quim.

England better not fuck him up, why do they have to start showing him the attention he's deserved now? Do we play two games during this international break? If so we should say he can only play in the second one.

All depends on Daniel. If he thinks he's not fit enough, he can pull out. If he gambles it and gets injured then he's a tit.
I think he'll be alright by the time the game comes round.

"I didn't train after the Notts County game because I picked up the injury. I had to miss out on shooting sessions and yesterday in training I couldn't really do anything.
"But I got treatment this morning and at training I got treatment throughout the week. In the end I was able to go out there and try to help the team win.
"It was one of those situations; in a game like that, you don't want to miss out and fortunately I've been able to get through the game."

He needs to pull out.

He was injured against the Scum

Now's the time for LFC to really pile the pressure on the FA by stressing how furious they'll be if their player gets played with an injury. Ginsoak would make sure they'd be too scared to play one of his in that situation.

Exactly. We need to get tough here.

Yeah, very vocal interview to ssn, talkshite & any rag we have good contacts with about how Sturridge is injured & if Hodgson selects him for the match they will lose any goodwill that exists between the club & country.

[article=http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/12016/8904115/roy-hodgson-thinks-more-english-players-should-follow-daniel-sturridges-lead]Roy Hodgson feels Daniel Sturridge is a perfect example of how a transfer can be beneficial and help to unlock potential.

England coach Hodgson is hoping that Sturridge will be fit for World Cup qualifying duty this week, with the Liverpool frontman having enjoyed a productive opening to the new season.

The 24-year-old has netted winning goals in three successive 1-0 victories for the Reds at the start of the 2013/14 Premier League campaign.

He has been able to maintain the standards set at the end of last season, with a switch from Chelsea to Liverpool breathing new life into his career.

Hodgson would like to see more players following Sturridge's lead, with regular game time of greater benefit to them in the long-term than a squad standing at a top club.

He said: "I think he might be an example to a lot of players because he was so good for Chelsea in particular, and even for Man City for a while, but they accepted a big financial offer for him. But they were reluctant to let him go as well.

"A lot of our players are in that position at the moment.

"They're too good for the clubs to say, 'We'll sell you or we'll loan you out'. But they face such stiff competition in these top teams that they don't get that many games.

"It takes a club to say, 'Look, I'm convinced that this guy is a 90-minute starter every week and I will play the price required to get him', as Liverpool did, and then give him the chance.

"But I think with the U21 game the other week and the matches I see, there are a few players out there who could surprise you if they moved from good reserve positions at top clubs to other good clubs in the Premier League.

"I'll give you Jonjo Shelvey as an example. He was outstanding for the U21s, he has had some excellent games already for Swansea and yet at Liverpool, with Steven Gerrard, Lucas and people in front of him, he wasn't getting a regular game. It does happen."[/article]

Has there ever been a debate about only having internationals during off-season? Its advantageous for both club and country.

FIFA (a non-profit organisation) had cash reserves of $1.2 Billion at last count (Pre 2010 world cup, likely much higher now).

The F.A are now building a cash reserve too, so there's no chance the gravy train that is England won't keep rolling. If anything there will probably be another 2 friendly fixtures added to the calendar down the road, I'm guessing after we get dumped out of the world cup.

His form is on fire, Rooney is injured and it's World Cup year...

To be honest this is the perfect opportunity for Daniel to make that England spot permanently his and if I were him, I'll die to be playing too.

You can't blame Roy. Danny is on fire and England need to win. I'm just proud our striker is England's best.

You may well be proud if thats the way you feel. The point is that our best striker shouldnt be in the English squad if he is carrying an injury.

Especially so, in view of the fact that they have a manager that I wouldnt put in charge of an under 8 team.
