Is it turning into a Emre Can situation?

He's massively underpaid imo and I understand that he wants a good contract, but why is it taking so long?
We've definitely freed up some cash now that Clyne, Lovren and Lallana left. All three being big earners, so I'm a bit baffled.
And if Gini is asking for too much, why don't we just sell? Finding suitors would definitely not be a problem, especially with him having a year left.
I'm absolutely certain that teams have made bids for him.

I hope he signs a new deal but if he doesn’t I think he’ll leave on a free like Can.

Ideally we should keep him. Unless he is asking for very silly money then I would imagine giving him a new contract would be cheaper than buying a replacement. We wouldn't get a huge transfer fee for him if clubs can get him for free if they wait a year.

That said, he may want to go, or the club might well think he hasn't got that many years left in him. In which case selling him now and taking the financial hit on a younger replacement might be worthwhile. I don't really get the impression that is where the club is at right now though.

Could there be anything in the suggestion I saw a while back that Gini's fed up of not being played further forward, like he is for the Dutch national team? Would that be enough to lead to a parting of the ways here?

I hope we can keep him. He's not only the kind of player but also the kind of bloke it's good to have in and around the club.

Would be a weird basis for leaving though, I mean he's won the league and CL. What more can he ask for?

Pat Riley, a basketball GM in the NBA with the Heat, wrote a book where he tried to explain what happens after a team has success - he called it the Disease of More. He won six Championships during a long career and saw how teams failed to replicate it.

He noticed how when a team had success it leads to each individual believing they played a huge part in the success and as a result they deserve more playing time, more money, more scoring opportunites etc etc.

The players would become more focused on individual success than team success. And that would reduce their chance of defending a championship.

That might be what we are seeing here. Gini was an important cog in one of the best teams the league has seen in years. He's due an extension and is using that as leverage for whatever it is he wants.

I think he wants more money and we're not willing to pay what he's asking.

Well, more money as others have said, but essentially I agree. I wasn't saying that's the reason , just wondering whether it might be, whether wholly or partly.

If starting games is that important to him, it probably rules almost all of the elite clubs.

Who have PSG got in midfield these days? Aside from them and maybe a challenger team in Italy where's he gonna go?

Bayern has a slot open.
He'd fit right in at Barca.

Barca appears to be as broke as us. He might get better wages with us. Normally, Juve collects midfielders but they have over-collected them.

Maybe Inter? Conte loves premier league players and age does not seem to be a concern - Sanchez, Ashley Young.

Inter is a possibility.

He's already won the CL and league and he's earning just over a million quid a year after tax. He'll be a long time retired soon with one more big contract opportunity coming up... If I was him I'd sign for whoever's paying the most.

Exactly why he probably doesn't have a problem with running down his contract. Just look at what players like Can and Ramsey got.

Even as a Liverpool fan playing for klopp I'd be thinking I'm thirty soon, I've won the lot, and I'd like to never have to worry about dough ever again. Can't blame him at all

So if he doesn’t sign, do we sell or keep him for one more year and let him go for free like Can? Say we can sell him for exactly the same amount it would take to buy Thiago - would our results be better with Gini or Thiago?

Personally I would go with Gini; we know how he fits into a system and he’s durable. As great as Thiago is, it’s more of a risk if it’s a straight choice between the two.

I think that all depends on who is coming in. If that's noone then you've got to keep him.

Surely he's on more than that?

Thought I'd seen he's on 50 a week and that's why he's pissed off, but that was just a post on here. Could be miles out

Think it's 70,000-75,000

We've been paying Shaqiri and Lovren more than him. He's got a strong case for a decent raise with us.

I think Gini is on 90k. Which isn't some pitiful figure. He probably deserves around 120k, but no more. He'll also be 31 by the time his current contract expires, so I think the club will be reluctant to offer more than 2-3 year extension. As it should be, because I think he'll start declining in 18 months.

His position in the team is the most under threat by Keita finding form, imo. It would have been Hendo until he became the player he has been in the last 18 months. Because of that I am not so worried about this situation. But I like Gini and he has been a massive part of transitioning from doubters to believers.

Not so sure about that - Seedorf who comes from similar background and playing style remained in peak form well into his 30’s, Gini could well do the same. I think he’ll have a long career. And, like Clarence, will probably win trophies with several clubs.

Seedorf was technically far superior to Gini, much as I like Gini. Superlative technique is something you can rely upon well into your 30s even as your body declines. Not sure Gini can.

Seedorf was a fitness freak through.
