The Suarez replacement

I imagine Sanchez is 'that' player. If it becomes clear after talks today/tomorrow that he's not up for the switch to Anfield we'll move clearly for our 2nd choice (Martinez?)

It's been mentioned in this thread, but I think he might go back to one up top, so he's not looking for another striker as we've got 4, maybe sell aspaz.
We might see a few 'wing forward' options come in though. Which Sanchez/Markovic/Shaqiri all are.

Not sure if this has been mentioned or quoted, but I really liked the article at the weekend that referenced selling Ian Rush - our then superstar - and replacing him with Barnes, Beardsley, and Aldridge.

Another summer like that would work.

Quiffers. I've been making the exact same comparison on here for dog's ages.

Been reported Rodgers doesn't want a direct replacement.

Wants more squad depth.

Sensible. The only players who could justifiably be regarded as direct replacements would either (a) be unavailable or (b) cost every penny we could muster and more besides.

Tony Barrett said that Rodgers wants to bring in someone of similar standing to Suarez, I don't know if that meant someone in the same position or someone with the same potential ability.

I assumed it meant a big enough talent for whatever position he plays to make the fans excited, & sell nearly as many shirts.

I know that sounds cynical, but that's how I took it 'standing' to mean.

Same. It makes the most. We'd struggle to buy a player who could the fans as excited as Suarez does now

No doubt Markovic COULD, but a lot of fans will have no clue about him.

That'll probably be of a similar standing as when we bought him - a punt on someone that had been terrific in a much much weaker league.

Not as in a similar standing as a top 3 in the world sort of player.

Robben - Age 30 - salary €5.5m (source wiki) - 56 goals in 105 games. Probably would score 15 goals. Transfer cost - IDK
Huntelaar - Age 31 - salary €5m (source wiki) - 59 goals in a 100 games for his current club. If German record is anything to go by then he would get you 20 plus goals. Transfer cost at the age 31, I cant see it being more than few mill.
Jackson Martinez - Age 27 (28 in October). 46 goals in 60 appearances. Buy out clause is thought to be €32m. His salary was less than a million euros in 2012.
Robert Firmino - Age 22 (23 in October). 31 Goals in 107 games for current. would probably cost £20m

Thanks. What this stresses it how irreplaceable suarez is. Ideally we need a player in the 21-23 region doing really well at a top club in a good euro league. Firminio seems to be the closest. I don't know about others. but I wonder about Campos from Monaco? WOuld be hard to get him, but is he getting games? Sure a little on the young side, but a lot of talent.

I think we should probably take a chance on Luis Muriel. He's just had a poor season so shouldn't cost too much, and he does have great potential. Spend the rest on fixing the problems in defence and in goal.

quaresma vibes are strong with this one

Huntelaar would probably get you 20 goals. Robben would get you goals plus assists. Firmino, would be the speculators choice

about this replacement, only james or Haames R from Colombia seems possible or a player who can provide that spark or that unpredictability

£60m is very cheap for him, I would have swapped him for Suarez and paid money on top if that had been an option.

James is the best player I've seen in ages, he reminds me of the 90's a bit.
