The resurrection of Stewart Downing

I think a host of England managers along with his managers at Middlesbro, McLeish at Villa and King Kenny all recognised his talent but so far NONE of them have been able to get the best from him. I think it's because he's predominantly been played as an out-and-out winger and hopefully Rodgers will give him more of a free rein.

Correction - the England managers have, the club managers have not managed that consistently. I think BR will use him correctly, and he will have clear instructions on what and how to play and best use himself - and hopefully not soil himself as Ryan suggests against top opposition.

With Rodgers style of football, I feel Downing will flourish, as he'll be urged to cut-inside more from wide positions, and if out on the right, he'll be cutting in on his favored left-foot, giving him the option to strike it and grab some goals, or set something up for one of the attackers.

Even during pre-season, when he's played, you can see he looks a much better player, and this new style of football is one which suits him.

There was a point in the game against Bayer Lev where he picked up the ball on the right cut inside, skinned the defender and had a great chance to have a crack in goal.

He opted to pass the ball backwards to Gerrard who was in a worse position and the move broke down.

I felt like shouting "have a crack you weak prick" - cause it almost felt like he shat himself rather than believed he could score.

The opposite to what Sterling did for his goal.

It's stuff like this that Downing needs to eradicate from his game - it might be a confidence or mental thing, but, like a few of our players I don't think their mentality is suited to playing for a big club, so we'll never see the best of them.

Agree with that, Stevie. The fucker can do it when he puts his mind to it. He just needs to believe in himself a bit more. I definitely don't see it as laziness (as many have suggested). He's just afraid of making a balls of it, so he takes the easy option of handing the responsibility over to someone else.

Pesam I find it hard to take you seriously when you laud Stewart Downing in one thread and decry Lucas in the other.

If Lucas had signed from Macclesfield you'd be all fucking over him.

If he keeps cutting in and then going for a shot at goal and constantly missing - all of you would still be having a go at him. Perhaps he does not shoot because there is no clear sight on goal ? Its not like he was told to shoot in the Gomel (away game) was he ? I think the big difference for him will be that the system that BR plays will suit him and thats where we will all see the £20M player we signed. I don't think there is anything wrong with his mentality, I think last season his peformances were hampered by our overall inability to score. There were too many times last season where was bought on the pitch and Carroll was either not playing or taken off - and pundits and all were saying whats the point of bringing Downing on if your taking Carroll off.

The same pundits were saying Tevez is an awesome player so I wouldn't believe them if I was you.

These are professional players right? If he keeps cutting in and having a shot at goal and missing, then try something different. Either pass to someone in a better position or improve your shooting. As for bringing Steward on and taking Carroll off, there are other players on the field with different attributes so make the necessary adjustments when needed. Stop making excuses for Downing. He was poor last season and that was down to his lack of confidence and poor decision making.

Let's be real, Downing was never and never will be a 20M player. We overpaid for him because of his nationality. Can he have a better season than the last? By all accounts he already is. All we can do is hope for the best.

I think the reason I'm a relatively succesful gambler on football is that I tend not to agree very often with "the masses" and my "hunches" have been known to pay off.

I've said all along that I COULD be wrong about Lucas and that I hope I am. I've also said that he's a better player than he was and that I'm very happy with him in our squad. What I don't understand (yet) is the high regard in which he's held by the majority, I haven't witnessed him justifying his superstar status.

The Downing thing is just guesswork, I saw him at Middlesbro regularly and I was unimpressed BUT I did see enough to think that if he ever played in the right team and the right style of play he had enough quality to possibly become a good player.

Without making you too big headed (or should that be even more big-headed) you are right more often than not (and a lot more often than most posters on here) on your judgement on players and because there are a few such posters on here who disagree with my Lucas viewpoint I have come to terms with the fact I may be wrong about him BUT I'm not changing my mind until I can see it with my own eyes.

give me a fucking break - the word proffesional when related to the modern day football player does not go well with me. When I was at school the first thing you learnt from the PE teacher before being bummed up in showers, is that proffesional footballers are just as good at what they do with both feet. Then suddenly I grow up and hear - "he's left footed, ah- he only uses his left foot to stand on - vice versa etc etc...". Most players are shit these days, but Downing is a good one and he will prove most of you wrong. I really do blame the impotent strike force from last season and not him.

Are you sure you were just bummed in the showers and not hit on the head with a hammer as well?

Moron, you're a fool for being bummed by and believing your PR teacher but just maybe you liked it. Was it sore? 😀

Downing was impotent himself last season and its going to take a monumental effort for him to make a consistent impression. He's started off on the right foot so we'll give him time to prove us wrong.

No not really you pay thousand in wages to players who can only use one foot which is really shit at least downing can play on both wings
