The resurrection of Stewart Downing

I think Downing will have a good season and Rodgers new system will suit him, I thought he had a reasonable first half last night but was relatively quiet in the second but that could be said for most of the team barring Surez and Gerrard.

Its also a bit harsh to keep mentioning the fact that he got no assists last season, if it hadn't been for shite finishing then he may well have got quite a few to his name - hopefully that will be different this season.

SELL SELL SEEELLLLLLLLLLL. The guy is a very average footballer who isn't going to get any better. he has no tricks up his sleeve and is easy to work out. He is the weak link in our starting 11. Get rid of him and replace him with someone of quality and all of a sudden our first 11 would look very strong if we keep agger.
No point selling him Glen we'd struggle to recoup as much as £7m for him. Might as well see if Rodgers is an alchemist and see if he can transform him.

Admittedlty I'd sell him if we were offered anything around £12m-£14m but as that's not going to happen we might as well wait-and-see. As I've said, somewhere in there is a good player.

Yeah but he's a limited footballer. We need a bit more invention which he doesn't seem to have in his locker. But yeah i wouldn't sell for less than £10m and only if we had a replacement lined up.

If it hadn't been for shite finishing Fernando Morientes would have a statue outside anfield.

I'm certainly not going to make any bold statements about his talent, I only SUSPECT he MIGHT come good but I think it's a better than 50:50 chance. I think he DOES have an inventive side to his game but hasn't played under a manager or with players who complement his game.

I think of the 4 poor signings last year Adam, Downing Carroll and Henderson, Downing is the one who is most likely to come good for us.

Really? I would have said Henderson, Downing looks like a guy who has had one very good season in an otherwise solid but totally unspectacular career. He is 28 now, hes been around for a good while, thats not to say hes over the hill but he is very much a known quantity. I certainly expect him to do better than he did last season but I dont ever expect him to be one of the first names on the teamsheet for any club with intentions of making the top 4.

Henderson on the otherhand is much younger but hes shown flashes of ability that suggest he can play at a much higher level than he did last season, he lacks conviction and has never really settled but given the choice between keeping Henderson or Downing Id be inclined to let Downing go for anything above £8m

I hope you're right about him Pesam. He'll have a better season than last year but we still need much, much better.

Why do you think he has a inventive side? He's never shown that in the whole of his career. He very rarely beats a man, and struggles to run with pace with the ball. He has shown himself to be a bottler if anything.

I've still to understand the henderson loving. Where has it come from? He seems mentally weak player who disappears in games and just plays it safe.

Because otherwise it would have made Charlie Adam was our best signing last year.

That's known as an "issue" - and I don't mind Charlie.

I am in the he can only do better camp, my expectation levels were not huge for him when he arrived, a slightly better than average winger, but paid a premium as we needed that sort of player. First half hour last night was a big improvement

regards

Your description of him is pretty accurate but Id be more optimisitc about him on the basis that he seemed to improve as the season wore on, its entirely understandable for a young player to be a little over whelmed when joining a club like Liverpool, particularly when played out of position.

Henderson started decently enough from my recollection, then the teams form nosedived and his confidence seemed to go with it, but I thought he was definitely on an upward curve towards the back end of the season. Plus I think he is suited to the type of game Rodgers wants to play. Downing like I said, is more a known quantity, hes a 6 out of 10 player with the exception of one really good season with Villa. I dont think there is much more to him than that. You do need some of those guys in your squad but they shouldnt be starting every week like Downing was under Kenny

If we base our hopes and expectations for the new season on the likes of Downing & Carroll taking us to places they couldn't last season, then I fear we'll be disappointed.

I'm very hopeful for the new season, but we need to replace these players with ones more likely to achieve the desired outcomes.

Carrolls lack of technical ability and movement means he's lacking skills critical to Rodgers blueprint for success.

Downings overall sheer averageness and lack of passion, desire & fight means I fear he will never be able to do it at the level we need.

I've said before - 35m for that pair and Adam and you have enough working capital to bring in the 2 replacements we need that will advance the team.

The sad truth is Gene that we'd all be happy if even one of the 4 (Adam, Carroll, Henderson or Downing) came good.

I don't think Rodgers is prepared to give Adam or Carroll a chance to improve on last season. Henderson won't start many games initially so Downing is the only one who'll be given a chance to redeem himself.

IMO Sinclair and Nathan Dyer at Swansea are fairly limited wingers who over-achieved under Rodgers. Downing is better than either of them and hopefully Rodgers can have a similar effect on him.

With Gooner forums convinced that we are trying to buy Walcott and various talk of loan deals for the likes of Affelay I doubt if you will see Stewart being a starter in our strongest line up this season.

Oh please for Walcott, Borini, Suarez, Walcott would be devastating, as would this Affelay kid.

Yes, and as the likes of Park Ji-Sung have shown at the mancs, you can get some very good use out of limited players so long as they work hard, know their role and compete. I think we all suspect Downing isn't up to it mentally, but Rodgers is clearly working hard with him and if he responds, great, the squad will be stronger for it.

Running at pace with the ball is not his strong point although he has a decent turn of speed and carries the ball well. Where I think he he can excel is on the edge of the box, he has a very good eye for a pass and very good sharp delivery into feet. He rarely gets a chance to demonstrate this because most managers keep him wide on the touchline.

I'd like to see him given license to go out wide when necessary but to have free rein to come inside. Pedro starts many games for Barca wide on the left but can regularly be found anywhere around the penalty area i.e license to roam.

How can you mention Suarez and Walcott in the same sentence without using superior, miles better, ten times as good.

Id be hoping we'd be getting the Afellay who was exciting at PSV and not the one who's career has somewhat stalled at Barca (albeit due to injury) and at the euros where he lost his place in a very poor performing Dutch team. Downing could actually be a good shout for a starting place for the season in my eyes. New manager, new season, new confidence, in a new system and playing on the right where he shone at Villa. Saying that, I'm all for competition within the squad so i'd definitely take Afellay, he obviously has talent but I don't think he'd walk into our 11 as easy as some think.

One swallow doesn't make a summer. Downing has to consistently produce the goods to win us over.

Nothing mate. Misred is away on her Hen do, Molly is at my ma's house.

Just sitting around watching shite telly and drinking Cotes de rhone.
Same as me buddy,
Watching the Olympics, eating cashews and drinking Budvar.
Life doesn't get much better for a boring, middle aged bloke
