The Midfield

Witsel isnt really a defensive midfielder though. And he'll want 100k wages and a 25 mill + fee with 1 year left on his contract. Naaah.

Matuidi would be boss.

I don't see how the 1 year on his contact affects us at all. He signs a new contract upon joining us after all.

Matuidi isn't a DM either.

Just accept that you're stuck with Lucas for the rest of time and stop worrying about it, FFS! 🙂

He played that role earlier I think, and would be more suited then Witsel in all honesty.
But you're right he hasnt been used there much for PSG, only a handful of games last season.

Not sure who we can sign.

The midfield is decent but not great or particularly well balanced and crumbles (along with the attack) far too easily when put under any kind of real pressure. The past few years has repeatedly shown that work ethic sadly doesn't always make up for a lack of game intelligence and steel.

Thus far it definitely seem the case that we're pinning our hopes on building a team that can pull together to be greater than the sum of it's parts as it's hard to see any player we've signed or been linked to being a complete game changer for us in this department.

As for the DM position, if last season is anything to go by, Can is going to be one of the first names on the team sheet as the deep lying midfielder. With that in mind, it would seem a waste of resources to bring in an expensive midfielder to compete for that same spot.

I wonder what Klopps sees as his backup option. Hopefully it's not Stewart / Lucas.

Why would you mind having Lucas as our back up DM?

I'm bored of him.

Is he the last man standing from Rafa's reign?
I think so. Can't think of anyone else.
Well, I see it like this, we've got a DM spot to fill. Now Can is Klopp's first choice and that's all well and good but who's our backup?
Henderson? No.
Allen? No.
Grujic? Would be a complete waste.
Stewart? Possibly but is he really better than Lucas? So, no.
Milner? No.
So we basically don't have any other options than Lucas imo.
As a great man once said:
"Default? The two sweetest words in the English language. DE-FAULT, DE-FAULT, DE-FAULT!!!".

Karius (e.g. De Gea - not an insinuation they are the same quality), Matip, Mane and maybe Wijnaldum (if it happens) as we've missed a real goal contribution from our midfielders ever since Gerrard left, improve on every incumbent and if they all adjust to Klopp's tactics - which were improving the team month by month last season - then we could indeed have a team greater than the sum of their parts.

This guy will be back soon ..... man crush

A lot riding on his progression this season.

I don't understand what it is with our managers (since Rafa) and not signing some strong players to play in the middle. We need strength and steel there it can't be any more clear. In this league especially, any team without a DM/CM who can really support the defence will concede loads of goals.

Wijnaldum may turn out to do well for us but doesn't change the fact that aside from Emre, who is also more suited as a box to box player, we don't have any quality in the middle who can give some steel to the side.
