The Hodgson IN thread

I wonder how relevant Brooking's hatred of 'Arry was. Probably not that important, but there was certainly some resistance there.

Well that was so low key you'd have to have the keyhole under the ground.

Yeah, they are actually doing what someone mentioned earlier, trying to downplay expectations.

The way Trevor Brooking listed the underachieving failures of past tournaments, then listed all the better teams than us who would be in the tournament was horrific.

It was like saying 'This is Roy, he's about average, but technically respected worldwide, we're about average too. If we're lucky we might get through the group.'

I can take short term underachievement if there is a long term plan. what is our long term plan to improve as a nation?

For far too long, England has bombed out of important tournaments in a chaotic fashion. We are now confident that, with Roy in charge, we can look forward to England bombing out of important tournaments in an orderly fashion.

You used to say that - repeatedly - about Wayne Rooney.

Watch this kid, he's going to be utterly immense.

You're confusing me for Glock.

I still don't think Rooney is a great finisher (just like I never thought Torres was). Great finishers are players like Fowler, Shearer, RvN, Owen etc ... His goalscoring record on every England level, or on loan (I think Sunderland?), has been average at best.

... and Rooney ... I've just looked at his career with the Mancs (forget Everton as he was 16 & 17), he's had (& having) two brilliant years (25+ goals) in the PL and the rest (bar 1) were 10-15 goal seasons - with the best team in the country around him almost every year ... So I still stand by my statements about him not being a great finisher. Great player however. Though not at Adu's level obviously (that was Glock).

Torres wasn't a great finisher. I stopped reading after that. Complete and utter nonsense.

Torres isn't a great 'finisher' - I watched him plenty back in his day there, and he never scored at a high rate or looked confident as a finisher (look at his #s @ Atleti). He had a phenomenal stretch with Liverpool, where he was unplayable. That stretch, imo, doesn't make him a great finisher. As I said, that's reserved for strikers who scored consistently for years (RvN, Shearer etc).

Yes he is. That analogy is total bollocks.

Fabio Capello-2 La Liga's,7 Seria A's,1 Champions league,4 Italian super cups,1 euro super cup,1 Italian Coppa.

Roy Hodgson-1 Europa league runners up,1 UEFA Cup runner up.

6 in 36
13 in 29
19 in 35
16 in 38
13 in 36
14 in 36

Those were his stats for Atleti ... Compare those to the players I've listed whom I think are 'great finishers.' Now, as I said, at Liverpool he took off:

24 in 33
14 in 24
18 in 22
9 in 23

Excellent stuff ... He was amongst the best ... and since then, he's struggled and as I'm sure you've seen, missed his fair share of chances:

1 in 14
6 in 29

If you feel this is the mark of a 'great finisher,' so be it. I don't ...

While it's true that he hasn't been a great goalscorer anywhere but Liverpool, for me it's still the case that his finishing when he was here was absolutely world class - so that ability must be in there somewhere.

Oh - I don't deny that for one second. Whether that was 'the alignment of the stars' or the real Torres, we'll never know. But I just don't see a pure finisher there. He's still an excellent striker in his day but I just never saw him as a great finisher (and no John, I don't hate him ... I said this when he arrived too. I was just worried about it, and I'm glad I was proven wrong for those 3 years!)

Sour grapes is your problem.

Has any of your supposed "great finishers" struggled for a period of time?

Why sour grapes? It's not like he's with us and I'm trying to prove what a failure he is (for Chelsea, so far, that is).

I'd suggest most players struggle for a period of time - some longer than others. But if you look at say RvN's stats, he had 20+ goal seasons in 9 years, and the other two years were cut short to injuries. Torres has scored 20 league goals in a season once ... I'm not saying he's a bad player, but I don't think he's a great finisher.

so we have had a manager that has won everything in domestic footy and he was shit at international management. We now have a manager who has not won anything of significance in domestic footy so you never know.

I think Roy is suited to England, I am optimistic

Was Fabio shit? I thought he did exactly as the team should have. England are overrated pap. Never deserve to go further than quarter finals

Without exception Hodgson's successes, such as they are, have come in jobs where expectations were low. When he tried to step up (at Blackburn after they'd won a title and then when he came to us) he failed, simple as. There's no job in the whole of football where expectations - rightly or wrongly - are higher than they are for the England team. I hope you're right, Fox, but I see a traincrash ahead.

At least with Roy as England manager we won't have to suffer any more "He was hard done by at Liverpool" stories from about six months hence.

Fabio shit?

He had the highest win percentage of all England managers, ever........ You'll miss him.
