The Hodgson IN thread

I just started watching the press conference but had to turn it off for all the cringing. I can't believe Bernstein managed to keep a straight face with some of what he was saying. It could almost be a parody of something.

The 'could walk into any training ground in the world & be instantly respected by every coach & player' line had me laughing my tits off.

You missed the best bit.

Brooking saying England are shit anyway in tournaments so don't expect much. Only in nicer more stat based language.

Fabio shit?

He had the highest win percentage of all England managers, ever........ You'll miss him.

No, we won't. He got results in the boring as fuck and fairly winnable qualifiers we play in (Sven used to do pretty well in those as well). Then when he got to the World Cup he went back on everything he said he wouldn't do and England were an absolute joke. That game against Algeria was one of the most dire England performances I've ever seen and that's saying something. So he beat the likes of Poland a few more times than other managers we've had. Wow!

It doesn't matter who manages England. It starts with beating some shit teams and experimenting with some less fashionable players.

Qualification gets dealt with, but against good teams the team looks clueless.

Then right before the big competition, all the same names get crowbarred in, and Emile Heskey gets a call.

Heh, I dont agree at all. It will be much worse under Roy, and I'm guessing England wont get past the group stages and will struggle to qualify for the WC.
Capello was doing a good job with that limited and overrated squad.

Roy has a massive task on his hands getting the players support. When Redknapp was linked a lot of players supported him, but when the Roy rumours started I didnt see one England player making a comment.

Wouldnt be surprised if a couple of them went, oh FFS....

Coming round to the idea of uncle woy.

England are second tier of International football

If he gets England playing like Fulham/WBA we may get out of the group stages in Euro's.

That is by Defending for 90 mins and trying to nick a goal, England have enough players to hit teams on the break.......

Capello barely got through the group and it was a much easier one.

As said, it doesn't really matter who manages us.

I think they were a Rooney red card away from having a pretty succesfull qualifaction.

Anyhoo, its a shite appointment and it will haunt England and their chances in the coming years. Going backwards? Yes.

Hodge should try to model himself on Ron Greenwood. Greenwood wasn't an exciting appointment in an era when the likes of Clough were in their pomp, but he was shrewd enough to build a coherent coaching structure around him, bringing in other, younger, managers so that a possible line of succession might develop, and you could say it worked for a couple of decades. If Hodge does something like that (with, say, Brian McDermott, Nigel Adkins and John Barnes working part-time with younger level England teams), he'd be able to leave with a measure of dignity even if the team doesn't do much. If on the other hand he just brings in Mike Kelly and concentrates on results I can't see him lasting four years.

I'd bet a sizeable sum they already have in their own minds. One or two have already been saying things like "Harry would have been great, but we have to give Roy a chance". It doesn't take much to read between those lines.

England is now a results game, with no time for dynasties to be created. The typical Engerlund fan wants to beat them johnny foreigners and prove we're the best.

I agree macca, it should be more focused on building a footballing philosophy to last years, but based on how the FA has handled th appointments in the past... I'm not convinced he'll risk his own job to build for the future

I actually think there's some hope of something like this happening. It seems clear that the FA were looking for someone to fulfil a wider brief than that of simply taking the England team forward, and to be absolutely fair to Hodgson he does have (whether deservedly or not) a high reputation in purely coaching terms. Bernstein has been making brave noises about "we still want the team to do well" but, to coin a phrase, he would say that, wouldn't he?

True. It's a pity because I feel these days the England set-up is probably the only reliable way to nurture English managers. Use them part-time when they've got a club, use them full time when they haven't, and help them to develop.

It'd be a cracking idea which could only improve english managers. Until there is an FA reshuffle though I cant see anything as progressive as that happening.

I bet the role of Brooking in the selection process will soon come under discussion by the press. On the one hand, he is the one with the vision as far as using the England set-up to help cultivate a broader system for cultivating and coaching talent, but on the other hand he's been a fierce enemy of Redknapp ever since Redknapp was deemed by Brooking and other ex-teammates of plotting to get Bonds sacked at West Ham, so the apparent disinclination to consider 'Arry will presumably be pinned to that by some angry hacks.

Breaking:
Roy Hodgson has announced his 1st starting XI - Wobinson, Wichards, Tewwy, Wio, Bwidge, Bawwy, Gewward, Wwight-Phiwips, Wooney, Cwouch, Stuwige. Apparently he'll put Wewwbeck on the bench so he can west and bwing him on fwesh second half.

I don't know any of those players.

He's got Blatter's stamp of approval. 🙂

Congratulations to former FIFA TSG member and Grasshopper coach Roy Hodgson on his England appointment. I wish him well. Roy did a marvellous job for Switzerland in the mid-90s and I have come to know him well since then.

Conclusion

The point here is not that England have no chance of winning the tournament – it’s that they had no chance of winning the tournament by playing the anarchic football favoured by Redknapp. The type of football Hodgson offers is, in theory, the type of football that will maximise England’s chances of getting out of the group. In the current state of confusion, that must be regarded as a sensible target - although if Hodgson states this or voices satisfaction when this target is reached, he will be slaughtered for lowering expectations.
England must attempt to win the tournament; the chances are extremely slim, but have marginally increased with this appointment. England don’t have good enough players to be open and indulge individuals, and therefore Hodgson’s system-first approach makes sense.

If you have the stomach for the whole shebang, go read the link! Now I know why LFC under him looks so er stale.

Dont think I can read it after one of the first lines said that Englands chances have increased after his appointment...

Compared to Redknapp being the manager. There could be a point there, England personnel don't seem to quite fit the system he plays.

I'm pretty sure he'll get them to the quarters, then declare it as an amazing achievement.

He's essentially just an old English cappello
