Swansea Post Match.

We won, and never looked like conceding so can't complain about that, but in attack we gave the ball away loads and it's just as well we got a peno. Managed to win after a European game as well

Everyone raved on Can but he didn't look great to me, gave the ball away loads but he was told to stay further back so he couldn't do as much

Ibe was boss in parts. There's a really good player in there somewhere if he can sort himself out under pressure more. He never looked like he had that chance when it hit the post

Firmino looks better up front than on the left wing or attacking mid so far, when his winning the ball back comes in a better area as there's usually no one in the box if someone wins it high up the pitch. Not sure where he fits in when everyone's fit but I'd like to see him play with Sturridge

Clyne is a proper solid fullback. I remember rating him when I saw him for Southampton first game of last season and he's carried on being boss after he's left Southampton, so take note Lallana and Lovren

Got Henderson back with a couple of nice passes, we need more creativity in midfield so that's good. With Sturridge back as well I'm curious to see who misses out. Coutinho, Sturridge, Benteke, Firmino, Lallana and Ibe, also Origi competing for 3 or 4 spots. If Klopp makes that all fit in, we'll win loads

Anyone react to Gullit's comments about Can on MOTD2?

I thought Gullit was wrong. He used some strange examples to prove his point about Can's positioning.
Example:

So here's where Can was positioned. You clearly see that Lovren has the ball.
Can is marking or tracking Swansea's front player in order to give Lovren some protection. Perfect positioning.

Here's where Gullit wanted him to be. Pretty much leaving Skrtel with a one on one situation if Lovren misplaces his pass or loses the ball.

Lucas would have held the same position Can did in that case.
I'm not saying that Can was perfect but Gullit is seeing things that aren't there.
Can's problem was possibly his distribution. Lucas releases the ball faster and picks the right passes.

I thought Swansea were completely robbed with that peno and we were lucky. But 3 points is 3 points and the Jurgen-naut* continues to roll us up the table.

the problem still remains - what are we going to do when teams park the bus at L4?

@rurikbird and any other Bundesliga aficionados: I am assuming Dortmund had this issue to deal with @ home under Klopp. Anyone got any insights on what Dortmund did at home when teams came and defended in compact lines in their own half?

I am assuming that the solution to our home conundrum is right there in that answer.

* Jurgen-naut is TM.

After watching a replay of the game with ALOT of fast forwarding, I have to say that there's still some work to do. With Coutinho out we lacked creativity in attack.
We need to learn to beat team's that come to Anfield and park the bus. A fit Sturridge will help. I'd actually want both Sturridge and Benteke on the pitch at the same time in games like these.

I thought Can was very good. Swansea were very quick on the counter and there were a few instances where Can had to step in to win the ball or we will be in some trouble.

We got the win and a clean sheet in a very tough week and Can was an important part of it. What's the problem Gullit?
I didn't see the interview but if it was as stated above then Gullit was right, we looked like a Rodgers team at the back, far too often slowing down play and not taking enough chances going forward, though I understand of course that Swansea were sitting very deep. Often though we'd have the ball for 2 mins .. of which more than 1 minute of that was passing the ball across the back, down the sides to a FB and then back again. We only had 10 shots in the whole match, that is extremely poor when we've been averaging more like 20-25 per game.

If anyone reads this as a criticism of Can, it's not, I thought he had a very good game in his 'new role'.

Very positive that traits of the Liverpool of old is returning: the scruffy 1-0. We will need these types of will over skill victories to move on from the Jekyll and Hyde side we've become. I'd far rather a run of narrow victories than the occasional triumph followed by weeks of mediocrity.

Has ANY team been any good after these absolutely stupid Thursday games? This shit europa league ruins football. Far more confident about Newcastle away next Sunday than Swansea at home

All I know is my mate was going nuts about Can's lack of will to get forward while I was sat there thinking he was doing his best considering the task he was given.

Was surprised to see so many give him man of the match on here, was also surprised Gullit saw him as the reason we were crap. I'm somewhere in the middle. He reigned himself in so we kept a clean a sheet, but yeah he could have done better going forward.

The main problem is that without Coutinho we're not gonna find the killer pass through the middle. Lallana has a go and nearly gets there, Firmino also tries but it rarely comes off. Coutinho does it for fun. So while he's out we need to get wide more.

Can't see it mattering away at Newcastle but it will at home to West Brom. We need him back for that.

I though can was under instructions to hold back myself

I thought his distribution was excellent. Some fantastic passes from him.

I dont think we lacked chances. It was more about being unable to pull the trigger because their defenders were very good. We deserved that penalty as the guy jumped like a lunatic with hands high and wide. What was encouraging was that when in their penalty area we had many players in the box. Under rodgers we would not have done that. We did put on a high degree of sustained pressure on them.

Yeh, I find it baffling that people think that we didn't deserve the penalty, the guy jumped with his arms up like an idiot blocking a dangerous cross, defending would be much easier if you were allowed to do that.

We deserved the penalty for the same reason we used to get penalty decisions so often, & for the same reason Utd became known for getting so many in the 90s.

We had the ball in & around their box a helluva lot. You do that often enough & quickly enough & you'll get penalties regularly..

I'd be interested in whether Dortmund used to get a lot of penalties under Klopp, anyone know?

On the pen, say that was Lovren, would anyone on here be blaming the ref? No, we'd be burning effigies of the slack balkan bastard saying he'd reverted to type.

Of course it was a fucking pen.
To be fair i have not heard anyone other than swansea and some in this site saying we were lucky to get the penalty.

It definitely was.

Spurs and Liverpool's record in matches after EL matches is actually BETTER than their average excluding those games (only very slightly but that's not the case for other PL teams that have played in the EL, who are worse off), so people get far too excited about how they may/may not affect our performances. A lot of factors can skew/influence those stats though.

It's worth noting aswell that sometimes, when you hit these two games a week, it allows you to build momentum and form. We've also been fairly good coming back off international breaks too, certainly in comparison to other big clubs. It's not a massive hindrance if you manage it well. Our problems in the past have stemmed from not doing the hardwork early on in Europe and then having to put out strong sides to make sure we progressed, usually at the cost of a couple of knocks and injuries along the way.

Can has really turned a corner of late with his form. He looks alot more confident and he carries the ball in midfield with some authority now. For a lad his size he should be bossing the middle of the park, but he now looks like he has the confidence to pick the ball up deep and carry it past opponents. I thought his defensive play was good too, he made some crucial defensive clearances in our box and got stuck in. Maybe he can play that role after all.

We created hardly anything and looked horribly flat. Let's not start sucking each others cocks just yet. It was a poor game and performance.

Can, Moreno and Milner played well, that's it

The irony there is Can was the man who played the best 'killer pass' of the night. That ball to Benteke was superb.

It was a dead certain penalty to me.
