Sunderland V Liverpool - Official Match Thread

Craig Burley seems to genuinely believe his opinion is of huge importance to football.

In fairness, when a completely idiotic ball-bag like Robbie Savage holds court on the beeb, Burley might be justified in thinking he can act like a professor of football.

Lots of positives again today, the obvious problem is our lack of striker. But it's okay, it will come, I believe in Brendan

For me, the other problem is Gerrard. He needs to take on board Rodgers' instructions and stop sparking opponents' counter-attacks with careless or over-ambitious passes when our men are committed forward to attack. Especially when we don't have Lucas in the team to help close out opponents.

To be fair to Savage, he did just correct a Sunderland fan, that kept calling Raheem, "Ryan Sterling".

Only saw the last 20 minutes, (so not be a fair assessment) couldn't belive how ahead sterling looked compared to downing.

Draw is a good result

This kid was definitely MOM:

Based on todays performance, I can confidently predict we won't challenge for the league this year.

Challenge shmallenge .... we gonna win the fucka

Yep, it's a marathon not a sprint.

All those teams bossing it now and winning all their games will be well knackered at the end of the season.

this is exactly how I would have summed it up. Even though it was disappointing, there were far more positives than negatives today.

Basically our main problem last year, being an inability to covert chances created continues to haunt us this year.
I am not so sure that will go away unless some one in the squad discovers the ability to put the ball in the net.

Fucking hell, no way should Suarez have been booked.

Yes, he's got a rep for twattyness, but that is a ref whose judgement has been clouded by pre-conception.

Collymore was losing his mind about it on the Talksport live commentary, saying Luis should have got a red.

TWATS.

And they've said fuck all about it on MOTD.

CUNTS.

Collymore is a knob. He was screaming how there was nobody within yards of Suarez when he went down. To be then told by his colleague that there actually was a little contact.
Yep, the ref may have been clouded by Suarez's rep, but it's a rep that Suarez would have known a while ago would have brought such bias due to his predeliction for the odd bit of acting/diving. As such, he's brought it on himself. Either he should have seen this coming, or someone with half a functioning brain should have, and had a word in his shell like.

I agree 100%, Themn. Even some people on here are claiming he dived. There was definite contact. At least 2 of the replays on ESPN proved this. Could he have stayed on his feet? Possibly. Did he go down too easily, like he'd been taken out by a sniper? Most definitely. But we've seen it before on many occasions. Sometimes the player has to exaggerate in order to get justice. It's just a pity he has a rep for diving. It's a classic case of The Boy Who Cried "Wolf". But it was a definite penalty. And the booking that followed was unforgivable.

I didn't see MOTD tonight, but ESPN annoyed me earlier. While John Barnes got it spot on as usual during the half time break, the whole thing was very quickly brushed under the carpet by Ray "look at my poxy goatee" Stubbs. Then came the kicker. They never even looked at Johnson's penalty claim, which in my opinion was even more definite.

Unfortunately Suarez's card is marked. Perhaps we should sell him for gazillions to Barca where he won't be villified. He's a dirty cheating racist in the eyes of pretty much everyone in England other than Liverpool fans, and even then, there are some that subscribe to this view. He's fucked here. I love him, but I worry about how effective he can be with this hanging over him. He did nothing today any forward in the league wouldn't do- going over when he felt contact in the box (by someone who got nowhere near the fucking ball)- and yet for him it is a hanging offence.

To be fair to him, (and maybe it's just me wearing blinkers) I honestly think he's cleaned up his act big time. I can't remember the last time he took a dive. I remember a few instances where I thought he did, but the replay always showed contact. And if I'm not mistaken, he got booked late last season for diving, when in fact he was innocent.

That's what I'm saying. He can't get it right now. He had every right to go down today (professor of football Craig Burley even said so) and he fucking got booked for diving. It's bullshit, but I can't see what else he can do other than become the cleanest, most ineffective forward in the game.

Yep. As you said, his card is marked. The only thing he can do is make sure he only goes down if contact is made. As long as the replays show him to be innocent, he's fine. However, if he fucks up, even just once, he's back to square 1.

Just rewatched Sunderland's goal and the first error is Gerrard who is out of position causing Allen to come too far across. Of course, Suarez and Johnson then fuck up. Details.

It's annoying how often we get punished for mistakes.

That's the thing with the system though, if you make mistakes you're more likely to get punished. Hence why it'll be a long hard season.

I've said it many times, but what needs to be driven out of referees' minds is the concept of 'going down too easily'. It's an absurd irrelevance. If there's a foul, give the foul (how easily or otherwise a player goes down is neither here nor there, and unless a ref is a mind-reader he has no right to pronounce on the matter), and if it isn't a foul, don't give a foul. If a player dives, book him, but don't dismiss contact because you think a player is 'making too much of it'. It's this idiotic attempt at mind reading that needs expunging from the game. Simulation is one thing, actual contact is another.

I'm quite optimistic. We're playing well (Arsenal aside) but just need a spark in the final third. I think our balance in midfield is currently wrong which is what we are paying the price for. All 3 yesterday are better suited further up the pitch but are compensating, which is hampering us.

Also yesterday, Shelvey was the one allowed to get furthest forward when, in reality, he's the last of the 3 you'd pick.

There was a few times in that game where I'd like to replay the last few seconds to Gerrard and say 'what the fuck were you trying to achieve there'?
