Yeah, same here. At one point I caught myself thinking "Why couldn't you defend like that for us these last 18 months?"

Yeah Can had a delightful little cameo in midfield.
He has terrific energy in short bursts.
If we can work on his fitness so he can deliver this over 90 minutes then he can become an outstanding midfielder.

He did, bar .. I thought he was a little slow to react to those 2 poor back passes from Skrtel and the unexpected one from Gomez ... he should know Skrtel by now.

The CBs were previously notorious for putting Mignolet under pressure because they'd give him the ball when they were in trouble and then put him in trouble with attackers bearing down on him, but in my opinion, this time was different - Skrtel clearly underhit both balls badly and Mignolet couldn't have been expected to anticipate them as I don't think it's been like that before. Previously he had to rush his kicks out, but this time he had to do more and rush out to rush his kicks out. I hope he gave Skrtel a bloody bollocking in the dressing rooms at the end of the game for those.

I thought Walters gave Gomez a torrid time but overall he improved throughout the game. I think Gomez should be penciled in as our LB until season's end ...

To keep Gomez fresh and on his toes, I wouldn't mind us starting Moreno in some of the (perceived) softer ties, such as against the likes of Bournemouth, Norwich, Watford, Leicester and Sunderland, or generally against teams which do not have a silky or strong right-side attacker. That's about 8 to 10 league games' rest then for Gomez, and Moreno can start all the Europa League and League Cup games as well.

Next week's home game against Bournemouth should be an exception to this as Gomez will benefit from playing a few games on the trot for now, but over the season, I think giving him the necessary breaks in these games would be ideal.

The flipside to Gomez's promotion is that what was to be our backup RB is now our no. 1 LB. With Flanagan still not ready to return for a while yet and Enrique as good as gone, we're functioning with 3 full backs now, which is not a sound idea given the number of games we have this season.

This made me wince, given his distribution is one Mingolets poorest parts of his game..

'In this same fixture 11 weeks ago, goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made 10 long passes. On Sunday he made 24, with Benteke receiving more passes from the shot-stopper than any other Liverpool player'

It official..we are becoming long ball merchants.. Route 1.. That will get Benteke some goals.. *sigh*

Though we where trying too hard to get Benteke involved in the game at times.. It was only when Can came on that started to change..

We take goal kicks now, that makes us long ball merchants 🙄

Drama Queen.

Mignolet's long passes (per game; source: whoscored.com):

Games Attempts Successful %Accuracy
2015-16 1 27.0 11.0 40.7%
2014-15 36 24.9 5.6 22.5%
2013-14 38 27.6 5.8 21.0%

Anybody got any highlights sites?
I missed the last fifteen minutes and that Vietnamese site that did MOTD seems to be gone.
🙂

So from that I understand that Mignolet must have been working on his passing for the accuracy to have shot up 17.5%. Well done that man.

I don't get the fuss about knocking it long from the keeper, his passing is generally pretty poor, at least with Benteke the long ball won't be giving the possession up in our own half.

Accuracy numbers depend as much on the keeper's ability as on the intended recipients' ability to win the ball, so it's probably a mix of both - him improving his long distributing above his woeful averages for one game and Benteke offering a better recipient for those long passes than anyone we've had in the last 2 seasons. What is clear from those numbers though, is that the number of Mignolet's long pass attempts against Stoke were in keeping with the averages he'd been putting up the last 2 seasons. That Benteke was the recipient of more of them is just logical percentage football.

I didn't mind him kicking it long at times.
Last season managers copped on to the short passes from the back and pressed us to great success.
Long balls won't be successful in the long term but we needed to change it up from last season because we'd become horribly predictable which led to Rodgers being tactically outclassed.
There's a line we need to find somewhere in between but it will remain to be seen if Rodgers has the nous to do it.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic (Not with you) about his practice. It's all about who he's aiming at, it just makes more sense to kick it long at Benteke that Sterling.

Yep. But Rodgers without principles is what? A young manager who hasn't won anything who talks and talks about principles.
I know we've disagreed about this before Macca...but this is a genuine question...do you believe Rodgers really believes all of the guff he spouts? I mean, I'm with you on this one...the man can suffer terrible bouts of the verbal trots but I do wonder if he comes out with all of the nonsense in order to cover up the fact that as you say, he's won nothing yet. Is it his way of projecting gravitas in the absence of trophies? I'm reminded of Tony Blair when he said of his critics within the Labour Party..."it's worse than they think... I actually believe all of this New Labour stuff." is that the case with Brendan? I'm genuinely not sure...I kind of hope not.

You will see almost two different squads this season

One for the cup and Europe the other for the League

May allow to prepare better for a game every 3 days.

He spent 5 years studying neuro linguistic programming.
