Stoke post match thoughts

I thought Walters gave Gomez a torrid time but overall he improved throughout the game. I think Gomez should be penciled in as our LB until season's end ...

Well that's just plain wrong because 'torrid' implies he was bettering him time and time again, whereas the reality is he didn't, not even once. Yes, Stoke targeted Gomez so he was kept busy all match but Walters had no answer, Hughes who was seen instructing Walters on the touchline on how to attack him, also had no answer and Gomez's stats just go to emphasise that, in fact I'd say the only thing he needs to watch out for is over confidence, which I believe was the root of his pass back to Ming - he had complete confidence in his pass and it surprised Ming, who still had plenty of time to clear but was slow to react.

100% tackles won
8 clearances
2 aerial duels won
2 interceptions
1 key pass

Stoke's most dangerous moments came on what side? I think he improved greatly in the 2nd half - and as I said earlier, I want him to start the whole season ... so it's not like I'm not a fan, I just feel he struggled with Walters at times ...

I love how people pick out people's vocabulary - I used a word that I thought was accurate. Apologies if it made it seem I thought he was playing like Moreno vs City last season!

Yes I've seen a few people say Gomez struggled, but not from what I saw. One of the stranger observations from yesterday IMO.

Stoke seemed to focus and make inroads on his side of the pitch so I suppose it naturally follows.

That being said, I kept noticing that it often wasn't Gomez losing his man or struggling to make a tackle but the midfield covering on that side. Gomez often seemed to be tucked in closer to Lovren. Anyone else notice that? Or was it just one or two incidents that I'm thinking of?

All the more impressive that Walters is such a cynical so-and-so, and Gomez was only duped a couple of times into giving away 'fouls'. He's a smart player.

No you are right .. I noticed that too. When not going forward he was close to Lovren, it was a much tighter Back 4. I was also impressed when Walters ran past down the wing but was given offside, in the reply you could see them holding a high line and see Gomez, aware of Walters but tucked in behind him and was not tempted to get in front of him.
There was also mention of Coutinho failing to give as much support to him as he should have.

His Yellow really wasn't a yellow either, Walters had his hand all around his waist, it was 50/50 at best but when Walters was out-muscled and fell the call went his way.

But not from any Gomez deficiency or mistake. He wasn't alone out there !

Sorry mate but if you use the word 'torrid' it has only one connotation when used in football.

Positives:

3points and reversed that bollocks at the end of last season
A good win at a very tough away ground
Clyne, Gomez, Milner, all looked very good
Great goal from Coutinho
Defence looks more composed with 2 fullbacks that can defend, this seemed to make Lovren have a better game

Negatives:

Performance was pretty poor offensively
No goal threat
Benteke was isolated and got no service
Mignolet looks like he's continuing last season's form

Ming played okay didn't he???

He did, bar .. I thought he was a little slow to react to those 2 poor back passes from Skrtel and the unexpected one from Gomez ... he should know Skrtel by now.

I also thought his distribution was really slow. Reina had his issues but was always great at getting us moving into dangerous breaks. Ming just runs out and holds on to it, he needs to take a chance more often, Clyne in particular was screaming for it one time, with 20-30m of clear ground ahead of him, Ming just waved at him.

Note. Ming made 24 attempts to find Benteke .. compared to an average 10-11 kicks to the forwards last season. Use the option by all means, just don't abuse it.

Ming played ok, and will look better if the defence continues performing as it did yesterday, but he's unlikely to become a top class goalkeeper I suspect.

Gomez was up against a very physical, very intelligent player; he won a few, he lost a few but he gave as good as he got. His positional sense is excellent (as was Clyne's) and this led to us looking more solid at the back as the CB's were unusually able to focus on their own jobs. Gomez will have to face better players than Walters in the months ahead but this was a very good test for him and he passed it.

That's a good point. There were lots of times yesterday when I thought, 'Just throw it out!' and as you say he just held on to it. Granted there maybe wasn't good movement ahead of him but there were options out wide that Reina would have exploited quickly. That's what I'd like to see far more often than the kick upfield - I know I always moan about the faffing about at the back but the quick and precise long throw would be so much more effective than the punts upfield he was doing, all of a sudden, yesterday. We saw in the cup final that Benteke is nothing special when it comes to dealing with that kind of predictable long ball, so it was depressing to see that introduced into our game.

He's just a terrible, terrible footballer. Decent 'keeper, but absolute shite at football (whereas Reina was a decent footballer).

He can't kick the ball with power. They're all seriously slow, hovering back spinners that barely get past the halfway line.

He can't kick under pressure, as we've seen from his numerous slices and accidental low kicks along the ground.

He can't throw the ball at pace for reasons I can't fathom. Throwing a football the way keepers do does not require natural talent, the way a cricketer/baseball player would require. Arm's fully extended, and with the long arms that keepers have, getting distance and accuracy should be piss easy.

All he can do is dive left or right, catch or block shots. I'm always desperate to see counter attacks started the way Reina used to, but I've given up completely on the idea while Ming remains No.1.

Good shot stopper, but I really, really don't like him.

Ming also scuffed one clearance along the ground which could have gone straight to a Stoke player but fortunately for us the ball bobbled up to half way line before anyone got possession.....he/we won't always be that lucky. He's an okay goalie but he will cost us some points this season. I think at some stage he could have another crisis of confidence and Bogdan will be given a chance.

Bad anti semitic post that

You see, that is the difference between living in the UK / USA and China, and maybe generations. You all have gutter minds attuned to correctly or wrongly (in this case) spot potential racism / socially unacceptable comments/pics !

When LTW responded with 'Fine' ..... the very first thing I thought of (and 'heard') was Miss Piggy flicking back her hair and walking off-stage with a 'Fine' (meaning completely the opposite of course).

Anyway apologies to LTW for any personal slight I may have somehow naively made. Not sorry to the rest of you cunts for your gutter minds.
