Stoke post match thoughts

I don't think he's strong enough, doesn't have the stamina and holds on to it too much Macca. I do like his technical ability but doesn't show enough of it.

First game of the season, lots of unfit players all over the park and the usual crap here about us, based on that, being really average.

There were positives in a match of attrition :
In defence Gomez, Lovren and Clyne all performed well. Gomez had a very good game for his PL debut, not faultless, but he looked far from out of place and is easily worthy of the LB slot.
In midfield Henderson looked as bad as he did pre-season but it's great to see the pressing game back with Milner making a big contribution to it.
Ibe looks like he'll go on to have a stellar season once the team settles down.
Firmino came on and showed some lovely tricks and skills, excited to see more once he gets fit.
Benteke at last means we have someone who can win the ball in the air, occupy both CBs and is an absolute beast on the ball, he contributed to us shading possession over the match by winning more than his fair share of headers in their half of the pitch. Once Coutinho/Firmino/Milner/Henderson work out how to play with him he's going to be ace.
Can came on and made an instant impact in midfield, from about the 70 min onwards we were starting to control the game and I thought we were going to score ... not like that though !
However, as I've mentioned before, last season we had a powder-puff team unable to compete with physically powerful teams like Stoke - today we gave as good as we got, we now have far more presence and aren't going to be bullied by anyone this season. Long way to go but some positive signs .... and any team in the PL would be more than happy with a win at Stoke, the fact we edged all of the stats is just a plus.

Largely agree, but why leave Skrtel out of your praise for the defence? He played as well as any of them IMHO.

Lallana is a clever, technically good and imaginative player. Granted he had a poor game today but I don't get all the hate for him. At his best he's a fine player. But will he fit anywhere in this team once Firmino is settled? I doubt it. But I still like him as a player.

He's average. Overpriced and wasn't needed and still isn't. Should have offloaded in the summer and used the money elsewhere, ideally for DM

I am always a Skrtel apologist but even I thought he was a bit off the pace today.

That awful back pass and a few sketchy clearances and repeatedly giving too much room to Diouf to pick up the ball and turn to face goal.

I actually thought Lovren was better today...

Pro fucking Rogers you cunt. Some cunt I would be if proved right should a new chap lead us to top 4

How's a new "chap" going to lead us to the top four with your brilliant methodology of having us lose games and be well off the pace in October so he can be sacked? You haven't really thought this one through.

Weren't you like this over Dalglish aswell? So how long does the next guy get before you want him out?

Perhaps over the game as a whole, but he should have got sent off for that elbow. None of them were perfect though. I guess what I'm saying is I don't think Skrtel was further from it than the rest of them. All abaht opinions though innit Brian?

It's a fair point about him holding on to it too long. Personally I think he wouldn't do that so much if there were better runs being made in and around the area, but it is indeed a problem at the mo.

Yeah, it was kinda pleasing though to see us play them at their own game. We were physical from the off and made sure we didn't let them dominate. That was crucial after last season.

Admittedly it would be a long shot, but with a coach that actually knows what he's doing its not inconceivable that we couldn't. Better chance than if we stick with this clown.

I was as kenny was struggling. Rogers has struggled or looked out of his depth in my eyes since he came in. In his second season he was fortunate that he had a great front three that included one of the best players in the world, we also went on a hell of a freakish run at the end of the season. He's had three seasons, sufficient in my eyes.

Totally agree.

BTW after the stick which he's (quite justifiably) been shipping for so long, I reckon it says a lot for Lovren that he's getting to grips (starting in the final weeks of last season) with recovering the situation. "One swallow doth not a summer make" but, if he's got enough character to keep this up, you have to give the guy credit for that.

Yeah you're right. I'm not a fan but I thought he was very good today, much more classy and played like a proper dominant centre half. There was a header early on in the game where he rushed out and out-muscled a couple of players to head it clear, like a signal of intent early doors. Him and Mignolet were both really good and reliable.

Stoke are a tough team but then so are most of the teams in the league these days so no slack on that front. There were a few positives but all in all a pretty lackluster performance that had too much in common with the shit we saw last season.

I suppose you have to put it into context of the fact that it was first game of the season and we're off the back of a bit of a mad pre-season (or at least that's what it seemed like) so it was great to get the win but we need to improve and fast given the games we've got coming up.

In terms of the positives, Lovren looked like less of a disaster and I liked the look of Gomez - Moreno has got his work cut out.

Firmino had some nice touches in the time he got. Am I right in thinking he got a bollocking from Henderson when he tried something fancy and we ended up conceding possession and a free kick?

You know, the more I think about it, the better this run of hard games *could* be.

If we are gonna go in to them trying not to concede & get the defence confident again it should provide an excellent base to build on.

Massive disclaimer being we need to not get battered or concede loads in those games.

Great 3 points. Boring game and we never really looked like scoring.
Coutinho is going to be unreal this year.

On last season we are plus 3 points and plus 6 goals after 1 game.
Boom.

And if we arent allowed to create a motm thread Morse needs to get his shit together.

Feel a bit sorry for all the cunts that want us to get beat so Rodgers gets sacked but it looks like we just got the best result of the weekend.
Fucking right! Who are they by the way? I have a hack virus I'm just itching to use! #notreally #yesreally

Covered all legal bases right there.... Or have I?
