Stoke post match thoughts

The top teams may re think their pre season money making tours.

After seeing how badly others started we should be delighted to grab three points

And when the same top teams still finish in the top positions and win all the major trophies, they'll ignore that little suggestion and carry on doing it again.

I'm with @Squiggles - I thought they looked tired, rusty and lacking any driving force. A moment of awesomeness from Coutinho doesn't paper over that. As always though the main positive is the 3 points. Bagged and tagged and away to Stoke. No bad thing on the opening day. One thing I do know is that they will get better and I won £50 on predicting a 0-1 win. Obvious really innit!

Is that gonna go to your next holiday fund?

Oh now you've done it.

I can see him rubbing his hands together & thinking "Expenses, it'll ALL be expenses!"
Ha! None of you lot complained when I wanged 15 scouse sunsets on the company card for x-mas drinkies! I'll do the same again this year as well. I might pay for some for some added security though but that's the way it goes.

@StevieM I have dabbled in a bit of travel writing actually. You were the recipient of some fine off the radar London tips from me I recall.

*checks flight details for the Amalfi coast in September* 😉

We have 8 days to get ready for Bournemouth, hopefully that'll be enough to see Firmino get fully up to speed and everyone to look a little fresher.

Fantastic to get 3 points. A win away at Stoke after last season horror defeat will lift everyone.
The defence was excellent and probably Lovrens best game for us.
The positive for me is that we looked switched on for 90 mins. Great to see.

Great debuts all around. Firmino is gonna be ace.

The Aussie cricket coaching staff were at the game today. All of them with half and half scarves, the big fools. Except for Doc Brukner.

The rest of the staff are Stoke supporters for the day at Brittania but not me. YNWA

Good result, first games always lack cohesion, we were solid though, so I think its a bit harsh to say the new coaches havent brought anything to the table. Credit to Rodgers too, even though some find that impossible to say, good subs aswell.

It's funny but the whole start of the season thing (whilst ace) has caught me a bit by surprise. I'm too into the cricket to really care. A nice win though. I had Aussie friends over to visit today - A beautiful sunny day and lots of merciless banter - Coupled with a fine LFC win. I'm in hogs heaven!

Apart from Coutinho there's no creativity in that starting team. Hopefully Firmino will add another dimension. Thought the back 4 looked a lot more solid, Benteke looked isolated up top on his own, think he'll be better with another striker alongside him. Gomes' positioning was 100% better than Moreno.

Who said they hadn't? We now punt the ball forward.

Sample size is too small but I saw very little of the stupid triangle passes between Mignolet and the two central defenders which invariably ended up in us attracting pressure.

I'm fine with the result, despite the performance, because we got the three points and that's all that ever matters. But we so obviously shouldn't be playing 4-2-3-1... it worked wonderfully when the two are Alonso and Mascherano, but it doesn't work for us now. We looked so much better when Can came on so Milner and Henderson could be further up the pitch. More often than not, it has to be a 4-3-3 with Coutinho and Firmino as the "wide" forwards, or a diamond with Coutinho at the tip and Firmino up front. At least when we're playing teams where we want to attack.

Great win, poor performance. It'll be a long season, and hopefully we will be better going forward.

I know many like I feel we need more star power, but this squad on paper is one of the most talented we've seen in a long time. There's a lot of depth. It'll all be in the gelin''

Encouraging. Actually from a defensive perspective, hugely encouraging. I thought Clyne looked every inch a proper Liverpool player. Lovren did very well individually and the pairing with Skrtel certainly worked. Gomez looked a little raw but he is clearly going to be a very good signing. Mignolet looked solid and his distribution has improved now he's added the long heave forward! Henderson and Milner have already struck up a good understanding. It was a typical Coutinho performance with a typical Coutinho goal. My one slight concern is he and Benteke didn't seem to have any understanding between them but that will surely come as they're both clever players.

We'll benefit from having the full week and a bit before the next game and if we can get the result we really should it will cement a great start and take some pressure off for the tough away games that follow.

One final point...what the fuck was Rodgers wearing? I hated the shiny suit and the pocket square was all wrong (too wide). And if he wears the waistcoat he had on in his Sky graphic I might have to reconsider my support for him.

Exactly. We now lose the ball higher up the field. Which is a bit better. The next step is to stop treating the football like it's some weird exercise gadget and start trying to move it quickly up the field via our own players.

People calling the performance shite and awful is a bit puzzling.
I thought we played it exactly in the fashion needed after the debacle in May and opening the season with one of the toughest fixtures around.

The irony is that if LFC had played more expansive and open and lost 3-2 the criticism on SCM would be only slightly worse than a tidy, defensive, pragmatic 1-0 win.
