Stoke post match thoughts

There were some shocking suits on display today. Brendan loses that weight and then goes out and buys a smaller one that looks like it won't button up and was tailored to fit Ant or Dec. Carra seemed to have bought his from a catalogue. Even Souey, who normally looks presentable, complemented his 'just woke up in a ditch' beard with a horrible grey Burton monstrosity. They should stick to bubble coats if they're this tasteless.

First game of the season, lots of unfit players all over the park and the usual crap here about us, based on that, being really average.

There were positives in a match of attrition :
In defence Gomez, Lovren and Clyne all performed well. Gomez had a very good game for his PL debut, not faultless, but he looked far from out of place and is easily worthy of the LB slot.
In midfield Henderson looked as bad as he did pre-season but it's great to see the pressing game back with Milner making a big contribution to it.
Ibe looks like he'll go on to have a stellar season once the team settles down.
Firmino came on and showed some lovely tricks and skills, excited to see more once he gets fit.
Benteke at last means we have someone who can win the ball in the air, occupy both CBs and is an absolute beast on the ball, he contributed to us shading possession over the match by winning more than his fair share of headers in their half of the pitch. Once Coutinho/Firmino/Milner/Henderson work out how to play with him he's going to be ace.
Can came on and made an instant impact in midfield, from about the 70 min onwards we were starting to control the game and I thought we were going to score ... not like that though !
However, as I've mentioned before, last season we had a powder-puff team unable to compete with physically powerful teams like Stoke - today we gave as good as we got, we now have far more presence and aren't going to be bullied by anyone this season. Long way to go but some positive signs .... and any team in the PL would be more than happy with a win at Stoke, the fact we edged all of the stats is just a plus.

People calling the performance shite and awful is a bit puzzling.
I thought we played it exactly in the fashion needed after the debacle in May and opening the season with one of the toughest fixtures around.

The irony is that if LFC had played more expansive and open and lost 3-2 the criticism on SCM would be only slightly worse than a tidy, defensive, pragmatic 1-0 win.
True dat.

We also need to play like that (not committing too many men, staying solid at the expense of attacking if needs be) throughout a long string of games coming up, so I'm not expecting us to suddenly look incredible.

Add into the equation Rodgers sides starting very slowly every season.

Certainly not but who couldn't be offended at that? It was fucking horrific.
He wears some terrible stuff. I remember early on when people were praising him for his coats but that one with the blue zips always annoyed me.

A great summary.

Good result, first games always lack cohesion, we were solid though, so I think its a bit harsh to say the new coaches havent brought anything to the table. Credit to Rodgers too, even though some find that impossible to say, good subs aswell.

Haha, credit??? He was always going to bring on couts and can.

Good result, poor performance generally. Tekkers and banana were hiding. Tekkers touch was very poor. Lovern was lucky not to see red.

Hopefully Rogers will pick the right side next time.

- Lallana is still largely poor. Should've moved him on this summer. Him infesting the left wing is also a waste of Ibe, who has to play in his weaker position.
- Henderson and Milner as a two shielding the defence is a poor use of even their limited attacking potential. Leaves Coutinho as the only creative MF and only a static Benteke for him to try and pick out. Same bollocks as last season. If he doesn't change that we're in trouble; if he does he's just wasted a load of money.
- Henderson is a wimp. Not captain material.
- Apparently no clear plan for getting Can and Sturridge into the side, two of our best players. What's the fucking plan Brendan?

Errrr.... we won. So that's something.

Benteke will dominate 90% of premier league center back pairing , that alone will mean more goals for the likes of Coutinho and Firmino.

Clyne looks class . hes going to be a massive player for us

Ibe will offer a lot purely down to his pace and strength , as the season goes on we could see him grow into quite a talent .

Gomez , hes 18 and on his debut plays pretty well all things considered . you could literally see him grow in confidence over the 90 minutes .

Milner - this guy is a winner . showed up the captain in just about every department today.

Firmino - unfit , a bit awkward but also looks classy .

Ming - sound . the CBs a couple of scares between them and I'm not sure why sakho didn't play but for the sake of continuity I think they earnt the right to play together against Bournmouth.

Coutinho. Same old. Silky pass here, sloppy play there , wonder goal . boom . I made a thread about his lack of end product at the end of last season and still think he needs double / triple his work goals / assists to get to the next level . I have a funny feeling he will do that this season with betenke leading the line

He does. I don't like the club suits with the badge on the lapel but the white on black effort today was the worst yet. Rodgers' best suit and tie combo was the 2013/14 version.

Oh and lallana , just didn't seem with it in mind or body.

I'm not sure he's suited to an advanced position , he just seems to turn back and or lose possession whilst out wide

I'm liking the use of the word 'wimp' - It appeals to the retro side of me Peter. How about 'He's a flump'? or 'He's well not skill'!

I agree though - I am a little worried about Hendo.

Oh you mean like the posts we had on here last season after being beaten by Madrid 1 nil..

Most saw it as a positive result.. to this day, I am still trying to work that reasoning out..

Yes, credit.

Unless, unsurprisingly, you've got an agenda to see out, as seems pretty rife on here. Anyway, are you still hoping we go on a ten match run of terrible results so he gets sacked?

Could be worse, most could have been posting "Rodgers out" in October and then turning it into some ridiculous "he's got till Xmas" deadline shite. I bet you're fucking devo'ed that we won.

Haha, rich coming from the pro camp agenda of yours you pillock (thanks for the new phrase Peter).

Lallana is a clever, technically good and imaginative player. Granted he had a poor game today but I don't get all the hate for him. At his best he's a fine player. But will he fit anywhere in this team once Firmino is settled? I doubt it. But I still like him as a player.
