Sterling vs Spurs.

Slight digression - 4:50 mark of the Sterling clip. Can outmanoeuvres and outmuscles Dembele for a clearance, puts himself cleverly between ball and Dembele and holds him off as he goes midfield to midfield, then slips the ball to Sterling just as Dembele makes a last gasp challenge. Sterling's subsequent mazy run drew all the attention, but it started with that smart and strong piece of work by the Canqueror.

Nice that. Also noticed some Spurs fans applauding behind the goal. Maybe his run, maybe the save. Not sure. The boy can play alright.

Some of the things Sturridge did yesterday were Suarez-esque. That bit of play at the sidelines and the pass to Henderson to set up Sterling, and then one bit where he totally sold the Spurs defender (think it was Vertonghen) the wrong way before rasping in a shot from distance that just went wide. And before all that, receiving the pass from Gerrard, and then clipping a neat cross to Balotelli, goal on a plate stuff which Mario headed straight at Lloris. And then drawing defenders and passing to Allen to get the cheap penalty.

He was my MOM yesterday, very different and much-improved performance from his first 2 games this season.

Barely a mention on any of the media about how great Sturridge's play was to make that goal happen. Even Gary Gillespie on LFCTV glosses over it. He seems to be one of those players that people are shy to give praise to for some reason. If Rooney had done that the media would have wanked themselves till only air came out.

Absolutely, I think having Balotelli drawing attention helped a ton too.

On that Sterling goal, I think Balotelli drew the attention of two defenders tracking back just enough to buy Sterling enough of a window at the back post for a tap in.

I think this is the key ... Balotelli (less so than Suarez but still) demands attention - and that gives room to Studge and Sterling, which makes them that more effective.

I think the MOTD crew did talk about Sturridge's performance; can't remember who it was who mentioned it - either Keown or Friedel I think, but yeah haven't seen his performance mentioned much otherwise. Sterling got a lot of attention even though I didn't think his performance actually came close to being as spectacular as he's fully capable of, and of course, there was a lot of focus on Balotelli, as expected.

Been looking for a compilation of Sturridge's highlights for this game but haven't had any luck, which I think is a pity. He was showing a good array of tricks that day.

Regardless of how he plays, his hair cut is shit/style is shit!

Interesting that @Stulikesdrums called this "Sturridge's worst game in red" or something to that effect on twitter?!

My only concern is that Studge won't like having to share out the chances.. He obviously loved the start of last season before Sterling came in when everyone gave him the ball or tried to pick him out (quite often Suarez doing so) but then he is slowly finding more people making runs and benefitting from his own decoy runs. He is a great asset for our front line but I hope he doesn't become frustrated about others scoring when he isn't.

I actually think Sturridge will score more with Balotelli up there than otherwise, simply because we'll be much more potent over all. Bizarre that Stu would criticise his performance on Sunday, I thought he was great.

I think so too. He didn't have problems scoring with Suarez in the team, and if anything, Suarez's presence helped him more than hindered. The same should happen with Balotelli I think. Balotelli spent his LFC debut playing balls to Sterling and Sturridge instead of being selfish as some had feared. I can see good things happening with this trio.

Neil Atkinson on the Anfield Wrap was saying that it's almost as if Sturridge is now in the Suarez role from last year and Balotelli is in the Sturridge role.

Sturridge was excellent on sat. A lot better than he was at Southampton and he scored in that game. He was fashioning attempts on goals out of nothing (Suarez-esque) and his approach play for the goal was brilliant.

Totally agree that Sturridge is better when he has a partner to occupy defenders.

After just years of misery, im so hard wired negative that I ALWAYS believe the fucking wheels will come off. Like I expect us to lose to Villa and everyone to turn to utter shit.

I (mental block) cant believe that Sterling and Sturridge are any good.
Every time I watch them I see amazing skill, talent and potential world class players, but my head goes 'youre just being a stupid fan and setting yourself up for a fall'

My head is wrecked. I wanna believe my eyes and just say fuck it they are clearly both AMAZING.

I said something to the same effect in the match thread. It continually surprises me when Sterling and Sturridge do something good. Every time one of them manages to wrangle free of a defender elegantly I'm like "whoah, did that just happen".

For that Shot Sturridge had that he dragged wide the skill with his feet and the way he turned inside to out was amazing. And he just does it all the time. The drop of the shoulder vs Kompany was just outrageous.

Maybe they really are this fucking good.

Ha, I was going to write something in this vein in the squad depth thread. I think when people compare the squads and say ours is good but doesn't match up to Chelsea's and City's, a big part of that is looking at Sterling and Sturridge and seeing good plucky young players and not absolutely top class ones, because somehow it just doesn't seem possible.

Marcotti was writing today that he thinks Sterling has Messi/Ronaldo level potential.

Yeah, me too. I guess years of watching Crouch, Kuyt, Morientes, Carroll, Voronin, N'Gog, Jovanovic and Robbie Keane huff and puff for us up front will do that to you. We all need therapy.

Got a link?

It was on a Times web chat and someone posted bits of it on twitter. I'll try to find the quotes later.

Ha!
As the good @doctor_mac can testify - my record is actually pretty darn good.
