Liverpool complete their second league double in succession over Chelsea and their third in four years. It was the 32nd meeting of the two since October 2004 - and the second in three days! The 4-1 win for Liverpool means they have won four successive league games against Chelsea for first time since August 1974.

Liverpool's penalty woes

Liverpool have missed five of their six penalties in the Premier League this season. They are the first team in Premier League history to miss five penalties in a season.

Stewart Downing still hasn't scored a Premier League goal for Liverpool having hit the post with his penalty. He became the fifth Liverpool player to fail from the penalty spot this season (Kuyt 2, Suarez 2, Adam, Carroll and Downing all failed).

In all competitions they've only scored four of 11 penalties and they've only scored one of six Premier League spot-kicks this season - Charlie Adam at West Brom in October.

How many times has Downing hit the wood work this season?
Twice last night and I seem to remember ones against Sunderland and Fulham.
Any others?
He really is an unlucky fucker.

We should probably retire the number nineteen shirt when he goes

worse thing is two on them have been 25 yard cracking volleys, he could have had a serious boost of confidence with those. I still have faith in Stu, he has all the talent just needs the flashy wingers mind to go with it.

Liverpool

Liverpool have struggled in the league season, especially at home with their main problem being converting chances as you can see from the table to the right.
They have only converted 9% of their chances this season, which is 5% worse than last season and converted 15% less of the clear-cut chances that have been created this season. These statistics show just why Liverpool have only scored 43 goals this season compared to the 59 goals that they scored last season. The fact that Liverpool have had 44 more shots this season and 9 less shots on target go to show why they have struggled.
On the other hand, Liverpool have conceded 0.10 less goals per game this season, completed 3.53% of their passes and been 1% more accurate with their crosses.
Therefore, the only thing that Liverpool need to do to get back among the top 4 is take their chances as this is the only thing holding them back. So, if Carroll gets back to his goalscoring form at Newcastle and Suarez continues to score goals then Liverpool may have a much better year next season

Eden Hazard and Lionel Messi are the only two players with 15+ goals and 15+ assists this season across the top five European leagues.

A goal against Mallorca would make Cristiano Ronaldo the first player to score against 19 sides in a La Liga season.

Is it fair to say that Suarez created about 27 (or more) out of our 51 clear cut chances? (since he often does create chances for himself...)

Still loads more than alonso

I'm willing to give the big lad a clean slate. Doc Mac pyar bums him and I like Doc Mac, so i'll trust his instincts for now

Guess that's because different statistic recording system define assists differently.

The 10 were supposed from the following matches:

13.08.11 - Liverpool - Sunderland
27.08.11 - Liverpool - Bolton
24.09.11 - Liverpool - Wolves
20.11.11 - Chelsea - Liverpool
27.11.11 - Liverpool - Man City
10.12.11 - Liverpool - QPR
30.12.11 - Liverpool - Newcastle
31.01.12 - Wolves - Liverpool (2)
11.02.12 - Man Utd - Liverpool

Considering our lack of prolificacy, its a satisfactory return.

Are we really comparing Alonso and Adam?

I'm not.

Alonso wasn't an assist king. He was the metronome that kept us beautiful. Adam is more of a loose cannon.

And that's why Lucas and Adam, given a full season, might have ended up as a boss partnership. Lucas will never be an assist king, but he had learned to be excellent positionally, and to always be in a good position to take the ball and recycle. Adam and he could have had a good season together, and were beginning to develop a decent partnership.

Here is a statistic for you - Andy Carroll has won more aerials than any other player in top 5 Europe Leagues with 147 balls won in the air - and more than Norwich's back four (131).

Liverpool
  • Liverpool's 4-1 win over Chelsea means they have scored four or more goals in a league game in every season since returning to the top-flight in 1962.
