Spurs - Are they title contenders?

Nobody mentioning United possibly signing Ronaldo!

I backed Liverpool to win the league at 38/1 and traded out at 29/1 when it looked like we were getting Willian. I stuck my profit on Spurs at 27/1 and win £5k if they prevail. I have (today) just back United £200 at 4.3 (10/3) because I'm convinced they're gonna get Ronaldo and their price will shorten dramatically to about 2.7 (7/4) if this happens.

Some clues..................

United still have the No.7 shirt unallocated.
Madrid will probably need to sell if they're getting Bale.
Chevrolet, United's newest sponsor, have just brought out a new car called the................CR7.

Could all be specualtive bollix but..............

i wish i understood all this betting shit, i want free money

last i heard he was 'considering his options' after already having a medical, journos probably tryna squeeze the last bit of juice out of this cum rag of a tranfer story

Or his agents trying to squeeze more in wages out of spurs.

Think about the alternative.

If they had Willian, Soldado, Lamela, Capoue, Paulinho etc instead of Bale do they not beat the likes of West Ham ?

The likelihood is they win by more

I don't think that it's allowed to exchange 1 player for 5. Can you imagine the substitution ? Utter chaos and the commentators desperately trying to compute who goes where.

You also need to factor in wages if you're thinking about it that way

Be interesting to see how they get on IF they were not to get 'fro and lamela and lost bale. And didn't get coentrao in part-ex

They don't seem to have had any back luck in the market yet, everyone they've gone for they've got. They're overdue some shit.

Brian Reade in today's Mirror
http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/brian-reade-column-arsenal-buy-2212641

Throughout last season, a national radio pundit slaughtered Andre Villas-Boas.

He told listeners Villas-Boas was doing so badly, Harry Redknapp’s relegation-bound QPR would finish above Spurs.

And when the season ended, he mocked any Tottenham fan who said their new boss was doing a decent job.

Funny how a few months, and the imminent loss of a world-class player in Gareth Bale, can change things.

On Monday, noting that Spurs were on the brink of taking their summer spending past £100million (and Arsenal had lost to Aston Villa) he declared Spurs weren’t just “certainties” for the top four, but serious title contenders.

To be fair to him, plenty of others seem to agree that one big cash splurge automatically puts you in the box seats.

Apart, that is, from AVB himself and, I’m guessing, most sane Spurs fans.

They have taken too many recent kicks in the teeth, and know that in Bale they are losing one of, if not the, best player the White Hart Lane club has had.

Those fans will be massively relieved Bale’s loss has been minimised by the exceptional work of Franco Baldini and Daniel Levy.

Not just in attracting decent players such as Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli and possibly Erik Lamela, without the lure of Champions League football, but in spending the Bale money before it has arrived, thus avoiding demands for hefty premiums based on the millions burning in their pocket.

But whether the splashing of the Bale cash is money well spent or just money spent has yet to be decided.

No one knows how the new men will adapt to the Premier League or if AVB can integrate them successfully in a season.

Remember Roman Abramovich handing Claudio Ranieri £120m when he took over in 2003?

It went so well, the Italian was sacked.

How about Sheikh Mansour’s first cash spree at Manchester City under Mark Hughes, when the likes of £32.5m Robinho led them to 10th place?

A title-challenging squad is never built in one cash splurge.

You need to keep throwing vast amounts of money at it until enough quality sticks.

But unlike Chelsea and City, Spurs don’t have those vast amounts.

The £90m or so they get for Bale will be a never-to-be-repeated, one-off.

Levy is right to gamble it all in one throw, to try to break into the top four.

And it may work.

But if it doesn’t, he won’t be able to repeat it next summer, indeed his funds will be stretched with an extra half-a-dozen huge contracts to pay.

That’s if these new recruits don’t do a Bale or a Luka Modric and demand “a bigger stage” (Willian has just issued an early warning by having his head turned towards Chelsea as he was about to hold up his new Spurs shirt).

Arsene Wenger is rightly getting mauled for Arsenal's toothless performance so far in this transfer window.

But if Wenger does manage to bring in two big signings in the next 10 days, I would STILL take Arsenal to finish above Spurs.

Arsene may not know it all, but he knows how to guide the Gooners into the Champions League places.

And the point being overlooked about Arsenal is that, for once, they haven’t lost a key player this summer.

Not Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey or Laurent Koscielny.

All very good players who, as they showed in Istanbul on Wednesday, provide the base of a very good team.

Spurs faced an uphill task finishing ahead of Arsenal even if Bale had stayed.

Without him, and with the possibility Wenger may pull his finger out next week, it hasn’t got any easier.

Some good points there. I don't always agree with Reade (e.g.I'm not sure he's right about this) but he's a cut above the usual redtop hacks.

Adrian Durham, the wum nobhead. Never heard him mention that QPR thing since he got it so wrong.

One thing I think Spurs are lacking is a match winner, maybe Lamela will be this, maybe Soldado? But with Gareth Bale they had this 100%. I think that'll be a huge loss for them, match winners are invaluable, that's why I'm glad we've kept Suarez.

Who's Chelsea's and Arsenal's match winner (a genuine question with no sarcasm intended)?

Mata (last year), Hazard and now Eto's are all match winners, harder to say for Arsenal, but both Cazorla and Walcott have the potential to be.

I think he's entered the team for the Eton Wall Game this season. He's only about 15 players short now.

They'll have 7 or so new 1st team players. Surely/hopefully that's a recipe for disaster.

Lloris
Walker
Vertonghen
Chiriches
Assou

Capoue
Sandro

Lamela
Paulinho
Eriksen

Soldado

Dawson, Friedel, Lennon, Dembele, Defoe, Adebayor, Holtby, Naughton, Kaboul, Rose, Thownsend, Sigurdson, Chadli

Yup. They have to be contenders with that squad.

With that array of assembled talent, even if Spurs aren't prepared to be challengers, the press would make them out to be. Handling the scrutiny, the pressure, and practically bedding in a new first team -- AVB has his work cut out for him.

I don't think so. The press will be too preoccupied with the loss of Bale.

Possibly. I think they will do just that, but also build Lamela up to be the next Bale. A lot of eyes will be on the new-look Spurs for sure.

They're building a very good team alright. Will certainly push for 3rd but not the title.

A few question marks about the players they've signed and how they'll adapt. Dont think Soldado is good enough tbh. The first two games have been awful from him and he wont get 38 penalties this season.
