Spurs - Are they title contenders?

Why do we do this every year; look at the other teams signings, and cower, and talk ourselves down table. Then we play these teams and either win or draw, and never lose badly. Look, this team that Rodgers has, is on paper as good as Rafa's teams. OK, Rafa had a better midfield, but we've got a far better attacking team now. Swings and roundabouts. One game at a time, let's focus on our own talents. We have many.

maybe not but i could smash your jaw to fucking pieces.

If they get Lamela and Coentrao, they definitely have a chance, but short of that I can't say. If all they end up with is Soldado and Willian as attacking threats, that's a very topheavy roster. I would say there's a lot of boom or bust potential in their side, and between European matches, cups, and the League, I don't think they have enough depth to compete on all of those fronts.

It might depend on how Kaboul and Sandro do this year, but there is a lot that can go wrong for their side.

Look at their defence and there's reason for hope. Top heavy attacking wise but skint in defence.

They have some excellent midfield cover for their backline(as well as Lloris), but the defense itself can be suspect. Vertonghen is very good, and Walker still has some good potential, as does Kaboul, but that's still awfully thin. Coentrao would be a welcome addition, but he is more of an attack minded player, so I don't think that helps their cause much.

I would also say that while they have a great number of creative players, Willian included, there is a bit of a lack of direct goal threat. Soldado is clearly going to be their key man, but there is almost no depth there considering it's looking like Defoe is going to be moving on, and Adebayor is supremely inconsistent. Lamela certainly has an eye for goal, but after that there is very little. Dempsey, one of their biggest goal threats, has been shipped off, and Sigurdsson is probably going to be bumped down the pecking order some. Basically, unless Soldado plays at an RVP type level and manages to stay healthy, I can see there being a serious dearth of goals in their side, regardless of the midfield steel and creative play opening up chances.

You've won the thread Whirly.

I get it. Apart from all the attackers, they haven't got anyone to score goals.

I mean, it's so obvious!

Bar Soldado, they don't have a proven goalscorer ... Lamela had a great year - and I think he'll be good. Willian? Dembele? Gylfi? Lennon?

If Soldado pulls a Morientes on them, they'll struggle to replace the 8 games Bale won by himself ... That's definitely their Achilles heal.

I agree, I almost think Spurs would have been much better to have only got one of Willian or Lamela, sold Adebayor, and try and get Lukaku as well.

The same could be said about most teams. Apart from Suarez and Sturridge, where do ours come from? Apart from Van Persie and Rooney, where do Utd's?

Look at their overall attacking options. Soldado, Adebayor, Lamela, Willian, Sigurdson, Chadli, Lennon, Dembele, Holtby. They could yet have Walker and Coentrao as addidtional threats from full back.

Anyone can see there are goals in that squad.

And as for the 8 games Bale won by himself.... how exactly has that been established?!

Spurs should have went for Higuain and/or Dzeko. That would have given them Soldado + one of those two ...

It's a sky stat - he won them 24 points (8 games) and Suarez won something like 16 (I don't know how they calculated it but it's Sky and they always speak truth).

Take away Van Persie, manure don't win the league ... and Manure had goals coming in from Chicharito.

No one is saying the players you listed aren't quality, but none of them - bar Soldado - are reliable goalscoreres. If he goes down, where do the goals come from? Last year, they relied very heavily on Bale whacking the ball from 30 and scoring. This year, they'll be a different team and it will be an adjustment. It may click, it may not. I just don't think it's a given.

Bale must have been worth what, about 30 points to them last season? It's ok buying up 3 or 4 '30 mil' bracket players, are they going to get them more than that 30 pts? And then you have to shoe horn them all into the team with no pre season to get them to gel together, language barriers to get over, and straight into the 100 mile an hour that is the English premiere league. If results don't go their way from the get go, AVB is going to look under as much pressure as he did at Chelski.

While they are undeniably buying themselves lots of potential match-winning talent, they are also inviting heaps of unwanted scrutiny. Even if they aren't ready for a title run, the media would make them contenders for the title regardless just because of the players they brought in.
