Barrett: I think far too much is being read into the #Sakho situation. He's not first choice, that's abundantly clear.

Barrett: #Sakho has had fitness issues & form towards the end of last season wasn't great. #Rodgers wants to have a look at #Skrtel/#Lovren

Barrett: #Sakho is not the first player to have to earn his place back & he won't be the last. It's up to him now how he reacts. #LFC

Barrett: I got the impression that #Rodgers is looking for a reaction from #Sakho, it's an age old managerial technique. #LFC

So Sakho wasn't left out the first team for manager versus committee reasons then? He also said in June that Lallana should be fearing for his place, only to then ask us to read what we will into Rodgers' line up at Bournemouth, about which signings he favours.

He's nothing if completely inconsistent.

If Lovren has been consistently shit, and worse than Sakho, since he arrived - which he has been - then explaining the choice to play him as a result of bias towards his own signings is about as generous an interpretation as Rodgers could possibly hope for.

What's the ungenerous interpretation?

Sell him for 8, throw another 5 in, bring someone better for like 13m,
Really shouldn't be so difficult. He's short-term at best anyhow.

@TonyBarretTimes: Good news for Mamadou Sakho who's been offered a new long term contract by Liverpool despite currently being out of the team.

Yup. We were talking about this in work earlier. The whole thing has been a bit of a disaster really. We try to bring Rodgers in with a DOF, he says no, so we bring him in without one. What was the understanding here? Did we bring him in and force a committee on him? Anyway, he seems to have taken the reigns now, but the downside is he seems pretty intent to deem a couple of players as surplus. I don't think that does apply to all committee signings. He talked Moreno up well the other day after his performance, I think there are just inevitably a couple of players who's faces don't fit. More or less the same situation as when a manager takes over at a club.

As an aside, not sure if it's been mentioned, but Newcastle are apparently in for Sakho.

The poor fucker will have to learn another language quickly if that happens

Mamadou Sakho has been offered a new 5 year contract at Liverpool.
The Guardian report that the Frenchman, who has been left out of the 18-man squad for the Reds’ first two Premier League fixtures, could be set to commit his future to the Anfield club.

Sakho, who has two years left on his current deal, has been informed that he is part of the club’s plans going forward, and will see his wage rise from £75,000 to £100,000-a-week.
The report by Andy Hunter states that the 25-year-old will wait to see if his first-team opportunities improve before making a decision regarding the offer.
Sakho has hopes of representing his country in the European Championships in his home nation next summer, and the centre-back, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain for £18m in 2013, could go into the tournament still a Liverpool player.

If I was Sakho this would be making my head spin. What the hell's going on?

So far this season he's behind Toure but he wants to play in the Euros so might well want to go somewhere else. Then we offer him a 33% pay rise after not even a subs appearance this season for him to stay for an extra 3 years.

The club probably already know that he want to leave and by offering a new contract they make it look like they did everything they could to keep him when he is sold. The truth is IMO that the club want him to put in a transfer request so we the fans will blame the player and not the club when he is off.

It's the sort of dilemma that must keep the owners awake at night.

Rodgers must be furious with the transfer committee, them offering contracts to our players like that

He's still got a future here and it doesn't make sense letting him run into the final 2 years of his contract. I'd like to keep him because he's very promising CB who could go on to dominate games. He needs to improve, but I'm glad the club aren't looking to ditch him. Whether we've got the scope to help him realise his potential is very questionable, but hopefully the new coaching staff will be able to improve our defenders and the unit as a whole. Based on the first few games you can only be encouraged.

The first thing that came to my mind is that he's being offered a cash incentive to stick around and fight for his place. Not happy with being an automatic first choice? How about not being automatic first choice with an extra 30k a week? Better?

I'm sure if Coutinho carries on his upwards trajectory he will be rewarded with a new contract sooner rather than later.

Liverpool news: Mamadou Sakho set to sign new five-year contract at Anfield

France defender described himself as a 'solidier' who is ready to fight for his Liverpool career after a summer of uncertainty

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is on the verge of agreeing a new five-year contract at Anfield.
Sakho, who described himself as a ‘soldier’ ready to fight to save his Anfield career following last night’s 1-1 draw in Bordeaux, will extend terms until at least 2020.

The French defender was recalled for last night’s Europa League tie, with Brendan Rodgers considering retaining him for Sunday’s meeting with Norwich.
His signing a new deal is a reflection of how highly rated he is by the Fenway Sports Group hierarchy, despite the centre-half not being included in the Premier League so far.
• How bad have Liverpool become under Rodgers?
Sakho has not played in the Premier League since a 6-1 loss to Stoke last May. His future was uncertain in the summer but he vowed to stay at the club and wait for his chance.
“l’m a soldier form Liverpool, that’s how it is. When I’m called to play, I can be relied on,” said Sakho. “I’m always ready.”

The form of Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel is hardly giving Rodgers a dilemma about his defensive options, although he could try three centre-halves against the Canaries.
If the popularity of players counts for anything, Sakho will keep his place on Sunday.
Liverpool returned to England encouraged by a young team’s 1-1 draw in Bordeaux.
“This is a good draw for us,” said Sakho. “We saw a very young and very promising Liverpool team. I think we played well and the players answered the expectations. The game was rather balanced and our opponents played pretty well.”
