I'm sorry but I don't trust Klopp or anyone else. We've been burned too many times and if we've learned anything it's that no one is infallible.

Unfortunately our recent history of signing players for exhorbitant fees from the Premiership is rather chequered (to be kind) and it's more for that reason that the prospect of this deal feels uninspiring than anything to do with Mane himself.

It's also the reason that should this deal go through there will be a lot of pressure from the get go for him to succeed and quickly.

I know where you're coming from Keni, but at the same time, he's signed a few young uns at lower fees in the hope of developing them, rather than demanding a 100mill war chest.

But all of that development investment is pointless if you then go and spunk over the odds for more of the same of what you already have. I like Mane, but £30m is going over Benteke, Carroll, Downing etc territory. What's the point in trying to save the club money by investing in youth at minimal fees, to then go and blow a wad aimlessly on a player of the ilk you could get from Europe for half the fee? I don't get it.

Kenny and Brendan both got lambasted forever for this sort of strategy, with people blaming the shite Premiership based signings on them, and crediting the committee with any overseas signing that was a success. The only constant under the last three managers is overpaid for Premiership players. The three can't coincidentally all be that fucking stupid.

The difference between Rodgers/Dalglish and Klopp is that Klopp will never sign a player and then play him out of position. When he sign a player then he will do to strenghten the team and use the strenghts of that player. Klopp would never for example even consider to play Markovic as a wingback.

The above is a very big difference.

Klopp has played several players consistently out of position historically....

How is Mane 'more of the same of what your already have'?
Who's comparable? Ibe? Ojo?

This is on like Donkey Kong.

Southampton have bid for Redmond who is having a medical and are looking at Kostic and Boufal.

We should be after Boufal obviously

3 weeks into the window and already with the don't trust Klopp? He's made 3 bargain signings already....2 who already will improve our defence Matip and Karius and 1 hot prospect in Grujic....a powerhouse CM we've been lacking since masch/alonso.

We're not in europe...players like Gotze arn't coming, get over yourself. Mane is a quality player.

I don't mean in style. I mean in standard, output etc. I thought that was obvious. Is he worth £30m?
Let's disregard the Brexit vote and it's detrimental affect on the £ for the moment.

I think it's obvious from the reported offers being made at the moment (Deeney £30m, Pogba £97m, Rodriguez £50m, Lacazette £42m, Leroy Sane £42m, Mkhitaryan £28.5m, Batshuayi £28m etc.) that transfer fees are on the rise and that with the heavy influx of cash for PL clubs prices were bound to jump this Summer.

Yes there are cheap deals out there but usually for players that are unknown/risky or they meet buyout clauses so the selling clubs have no option (Nolito to City for example). I don't think we are in a position to be taking too many risks and we need established players for at least 2 positions, we can't gamble on all. Matip and Mane probably come into that 'known quantity' bracket.

However if we are going to splash the cash Witsel has a year left on his Zenit contract and would be superb in our midfield.

Unless I'm mistaken his output is better than our midfielders.
He's probably worth more than Lallana and less than Coutinho.
So his price in the current market seems normal.

So I still don't get the 'more of the same' thing.
Why ignore the difference in style as well? Is speed and directness not worth some extra money for the current Liverpool squad?

Which wingers/forwards are avaliable besides Mane, that contributed with 10+ goals?
We wanted Dembele but he went to Dortmund.
Yarmolenko? Boufal maybe?

25+5 mill is a lot but hopefully we'll get that back from selling Benteke. The team looks much more balanced and better with that swap.
This is basicly the Sterling replacement that we didnt get. Firmino isnt a winger.

Coutinho Firmino Mane
Studge

Decent that.

Last season the biggest issue was our inconsistency. We could play like world beaters when we felt like it and play like chumps the next game. The big reason for that in addition to our defense is the inconsistency in our attacking trio - Coutinho, Firmino, and Lallana - in scoring goals or in dominating games.

Mane is a highly inconsistent player. See stats which I posted in other threads(He did not score in the PL between October 26 and March third week of last season; In the season before that he scored 6 out of 10 goals in 4 games - a hatrick against Aston Villa and 3 goals in 3 games between December 26 and December 31). My biggest fear is that he is only contribute to that uncertainty in performance.

When we invest higher than 30 million, we need players who can elevate us to the next level by being more consistent. Of course such players who are at the top of their game will be difficult to purchase because of us not being Europe. That is where I thought maybe some scouting for under the radar players and targetting youth players who can start contributing immediately with the potential to be a superstar in 2-3 years can help (For example Joe Gomez looked raw but a player worthy of starting for us from day one).

Mane looks like a player who will help us consolidate 6-8 again and not the type who will help us elevate to the next level. Add a young Gerrard, Owen, Fowler, Torres, Suarez to our and we will be in top 4. Add more of them and we will challenge for the league.

"Grujic....a powerhouse CM we've been lacking since masch/alonso." Intriguing signing yes but let us hold off on the Masch/Alonso comparisons shall we.

It really is not about trusting or not trusting Klopp. Houllier, Rafa, King Kenny, Brendan were not bad managers tactically. Given the right set of players they are capable of challenging at the highest level. Where they failed was not being able to use the moneys to create a top quality squad and a big part of that was the transfers. When we see such a sizable chunk being invested, there is a fear of "New boss, meet the old boss" being realized.

Brendan was a bad manager tactically. He never had a plan B. Not in a single game he showed that he had a plan B that worked. 100% attack was the only plan he had. He didn't show in a single game that we could close a game. If we took the lead we had to continue to attack because Rodgers didn't had a clue how to defend, not a clue.

When the teams found him out he had no answers. He couldn't change. He never tried to use our oppositions weaknesses because he didn't have a clue how to do it. When the opposition played a very slow team he didn't had a clue how to use that weakness against them. Mourinho found him out big time for example. We didn't need to win and Chelsea wasn't interested in playing attacking football but he only had one plan, plan A. 100% attack instead of playing for a draw.

Whilst I agree with your point, I also believe our inconsistency was a legacy of Brendan, if Klopp is the manager he's supposed to be, he'll make us more consistent.

Well, he did challenge for the league you know. I dont want to turn this into a Brendan debate. The point I am trying to make is that we have had good managers in the past who were sound tactically but finally failed due to transfers. We as a club do not have a good footballing scouting infrastructure to support the manager.

Look at Dormund, they have transitioned from Klopp to Tuchel and the wheels are moving with no issues. They continue to loose great players because they cant afford the ages but they seem to have the scouting and targets spot on. Until we provide that level of support to the manager, Klopp will continue to be magic until the stumbling starts and we get tired and then go after the next hotshot young manager and screw his career up.

Hahahahaha! 'Powerhouse CM' like....Xabi Alonso.

Your mouth is full of wrong

Rodgers was great at getting the best out of our attacking players but that isn't enough. A good manager have a plan B and even a plan C. The plan B isn't always working but it will in most games. The safety net tactic when plan A isn't working.

Tactically he was average. I have said that I believe that he will be sacked by Celtic before the end of the season and I still stand by that.

What I mean with playing players out of position is when you play a player in a position that show his weakness(es) instead of his strenghts. You could play a attacking mid as a defensive playmaker if you then how to protect him. Rodgers didn't had a clue how to protect Gerrard. Gerrard had to both act as the playmaker and protect the back four. It didn't exactly worked and we leaked goal after goal after goal because of that.

If you play a player like Gerrard, a player at the end of his career that don't have the legs to protect the back four, then you also play a Masch type of player to protect the back four. Rodgers didn't had a clue how to do set up the team to protect Gerrard.

It would be like Klopp playing Firmino as the defensive playmaker and don't set up the team to protect him. Firmino would then have to both protect the back four and set up our attacks.

I think things look a bit better from this perspective:

From the 7 games he featured in Jan and Feb where he didn't score or assist, Southampton were unbeaten in 70% of them - won 4 (incl. vs. Man Utd) and drew 1 (against Arsenal) while 1 of the 2 defeat was against Chelsea. Didn't watch those games but I reckon he didn't do that badly during this run of results.

You're missing the point.

I'm still not sure if I'm for or against this signing, but I will say that unlike Lallana, I imagine Mane will improve here as the type of player he is will benefit more from playing around better players, it's hardly like Southampton base their team around him like they did with Lallana.

Big difference in quality between Rodgers and Klopp when it comes to the ability of building a team though. A winning team.

Exactly, Mane on his own might not sound like a exciting signing but when you put him in an XI with the likes of sturridge origi coutinho firmino markovic lallana can it's going to be mouthwatering.
