Sadio Mane

He's fast and direct, which we do definitely need. But he's not a £30m footballer even in today's market. I'd rather look elsewhere.

30 mill £ is a lot, but the market in England is fucked.
8 mill for James Chester and Leicesters 25 mill bid for Deeney are decent examples.
As is probably 49 mill for Sterling aswell.

If true that Mane is Klopps preffered choice then go for it.
Klopp knows what he's doing and I'll trust him to build a very good side.

Appaz he wanted Dembele but he went to Dortmund. I guess he was first choice.

His interest in both players is no surprise: we all knew he was going to buy a quick wide player who could score goals this summer (assuming one was affordable and willing to join us).

It was pretty obvious we lacked genuine pace and goals from attacking players last season. He's at least very different to what we have, and better too.

Why not? How many wingers under 25 years old have scored over 10 league goals per season and are available for less the £30M? We sold Sterling for almost £50M...

How many of those wingers who scored 10+ league goals a season maintained their form on the second half of their twenties ?

Robben, Ribery, Reus, Nolito, Candreva, Andre Ayew, Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez. Probably more aswell.

Mane just turned 24. If Klopp wants him and the fee is alright then why not.
If Soton want more then 30 mill then we should look elsewhere.

Your optimal window for signing players seems rather small

For wingers in the Premiership it is. 17-25. After that unless they're amongst worlds best forget about them.

Even Hazard, who had the potential to be one of the best, has fallen off a cliff at age 25. I'm sure he'll bounce back somewhat but probably not to what he was.

Salzburg had won their home leg in the last qualification round for 2014/15's CL 2-0 against Malmo.

Two days before the away leg he left the training camp and refused to play the match to force his move to Southampton. A talk to clear things between the manager, the DoF and the player which was scheduled for the next day was cancelled because Mane didn't turn up.

The turmoil caused by all this was surely one of the reasons Salzburg was kicked out of the CL the next day.

As far as I'm concerned I don't want such a cunt to play for us.
You need to explain more. Because a player refusing to play is no reason whatsoever for a club to be kicked out of a competition

For some reason I have an aversion to paying that much for him, but you can't argue with his stats, and we're probably getting a little above our station if we think we can easily do better. I haven't seen him enough to know, but is he a hard working player, or rather lazy?

If you want to take that approach:
How many of our Senegalese signings worked out well ?
Irrelevant. We're talking about a young player with improving stats. To prove your point you would need to prove it's a trend with few/no exceptions. And even then ...

I'm taking it you missed the Chelsea game against us at the end of last season then. Sure, it's only one game, but he was unplayable that night and was running through our team at will. He'll be back to his best I'd say.

That is the part I am worried about. He scored against us in the premier league in the end of October. The next goals he scored in the premier league are against us in march third week. He did not score for more than four and a half months in the premier league.

In the season before that, he scored 10 goals in the premier league. He scored a a hattrick against Aston Villa and then three of them in three consecutive games in Dec 26, Dec 28, and Jan 01. There are big gaps in his goal scoring. Of course he went away for a month for the African Nations cup but still only four goals in the rest of the premier league games.

The streaky nature of his goalscoring worries me.

Yeah, maybe. But he's more of a winger than a striker, and that's a decent return. I did read about consistency issues.

I've done all this before with Downing and Lallana.

But sure lets waste more money because people think the game hasn't changes since the 80's

If Klopp want him and money isn't a problem then who cares if he cost £30m or £40m. We must let Klopp build the squad the way he want. No one know how good signing he would be. Maybe he will only score 10 goals or so but his pace will open up a lot of space for our other attacking players. He is the key player for Southampton. They build the attacking tacktics around him. Klopp build his tactics around pace. Gegenpressing and a quick attack. We need a player like Mane.

You have seen in our games how many times in every game that Coutinho or Firmino looked to make a quick pass behind the defense but didn't have anyone to pass the ball to and it slowed down our game a lot. Mane will give them that option. Coutinho and Firmino will give him a lot of balls behind the defense. My guess is that he would score 20+ PL goals for us a season.

Agreed. Although I'm not sure about the 20 plus Premiership goals, because that obviously isn't going to happen.

Soton is the only place we seem to look to these days, our committee are full of pansies.

If Leicester, West Ham, Southampton and Dortmund can find players at bargain prices, why can't we? We need an overhaul of the recruitment process which Klopp has final say. Should the Chief Scout go, do we need a sporting director?

Think of it this way - he has a great record of scoring goals in games where Liverpool are involved. Think how great that would be if he was playing for Liverpool. We'd be involved all the time. I'm not sure many of us have actually understood this.

We need to get rid of people like Fallows and Hunter who have helped bring in some of our worst buys for mass amounts over the last 5 years.

We need IMO a DoF, sporting director and 100+ new scouts. I hope that we build the club the same way as the top Spanish clubs do. The 100+ new scouts isn't a joke.

I doubt that it is a coincidence that Dortmund signed a lot of our alleged transfer targets. They have probably scouted them a couple of years and Klopp is using the reports he got from the Dortmund scouts when he was their manager. Our scouting is probably so shit that he don't have much use of it.

It's true £30M is the new £20M and perhaps I'm slow in accepting that, but highlighting other clubs who have over-spent doesn't prove to me Mane is worth £30M+. There's no denying that he a) good and b) what we need. The issue here is are in a poor position to negotiate given that he has 3 years left on his contract and we've overpaid for their players before. In one week we will be convincing ourselves £40M is 10 less than the Sterling fee!', 'He'll be worth it if we get 3-4 years out of him'. 'We've saved money on Karious and Grujic so we can afford to blow our wallet here'. I've heard it all before. Probably said it actually.

It just feels a but uninspiring, a bit predictable. Worse, it feels a Brendan Rodgers/committee signing, and I'd hope for something more imaginative. I know Southampton will go out and buy the cunt we should have signed for £8M and we'll be buying them off him in 2018 for £50M and we'll all be sit around having the same discussion.

Good player. Very good player, but the price is already hot and it's only going to increase.

Nice player but 30M+? Fuck me. That will probably represent the big deal of the summer and I can't see it turning us around.

Surely we'll eventually sign someone from Southampton that works out for us.

Of course, with what we've spent, we probably could have bought the entire team - ground and all, a few years back

The most galling aspect of it all is we buy their best players every year and they're still better than us.
They'll sell us Mane for 35M and buy someone better for about 2 pound 50. Like Squiggles said.
