Sadio Mane

They don't need to sell? What the fuck does that even mean? Why have they sold Lallana, Lovren, Schneiderlin, Lambert, Shaw, Chambers and Clyne in the last two years?

Why have they let Koeman go? Why did Pocchetino leave?

They aren't a club who want or indeed are capable of keeping players or managers. They may usually extract a decent price/ compensation in exchange, but their model appears to be entirely based around selling

They've said that they're now in a position were they dont have to sell.

Yes, they sold all those players but took the respective buyers to the cleaners in the process. Clyne only had 1 year left on his contract which is why we didnt pay more for him.

That means that they'll continue to get top dollar for their players, i e looking for 40 mill £ for Mané if they decide to sell him.
2 years left on his contract and no release clause.

Its not very difficult to understand.

It seems to be quite difficult for you. Again.

"We are staying true to our plan and vision and, as a result, we have no need to accept any offers" - Southampton statement after news of interest in Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana, just weeks before selling both of them.

"The most important point is that we are in a position where we do not need to sell any player Mauricio wants to keep" - Hans Hofstetter

"It wouldn't be our intention to sell any of our players this summer. We don't have to. [Koeman has] said he's going to stay. He hasn't got a record of jumping."
- Les Reed, just days before Koeman left and yet again all their best players are linked with moves away.

They fucking say it every year. And every year they sell players and lose managers. Because they are a selling club. And as for "top dollar" it simply cannot get any more "top dollar" than getting £25m for Lallana, £25m for Schneiderlin, £30m for Shaw.

So saying that this summer "Southampton don't need to sell" is as totally meaningless as it has been every other time it's been trotted out. I wasn't disputing the fact that they get amazingly high transfer fees and compensation, I was disputing the utterly specious inclusion to the discussion that they somehow "don't need to sell" now.

They apparently never have. And always do. So it's meaningless.

Haha! The first post I made was just that, they are in the same position as earlier in regards to that they dont need to sell = they'll get top dollar. But you somehow got caught up in the "now" bit which means fuck all.

If he's sold it will be for a shitload. End off.
Fucking hell.

But you said they 'don't need to sell now' as if this was some kind of new state they were in this summer, and hadn't been the case before

I had no issue with the fact we will have to pay a lot of money if we want Mane. But it's no more than at any other time, because they always say they don't have to sell, and then do

Unless of course you believe that previously they actually *did* have to sell, despite sensibly claiming otherwise, but now they really, really don't have to, so we will have to pay EVEN more

Which makes it seem odd that that Koeman wanted to leave, was allowed to leave, and joined fucking Everton, even though right now was the time they genuinely 100% don't have to sell

This will all be fixed if you just remove your original quoted reference to them 'being in a position where they don't have to sell', as if it was in any way significant or relevant, or indeed different to the previous three summer transfer windows when they said the same thing, just prior to selling everyone

Nah, you're still missing the point and context. It would have been the same point for the last 3 transfer windows aswell as to why they get paid and have gotten paid a premium fee.
There is no point in trying to argue about this when we're actually agreeing in my first post, but you cant see it mate.

Anyway. If we DO get him we'll have to pay 35-40 mill I'd reckon. Shame we turned down the chance to buy him for 10 mill 2 years ago and instead bought Markovic for twice that. Liverpool eh..

If it's possible to ignore the financial aspect of the deal, I still think Mane is a good player. Based on what I've seen of him anyway.

Lots of pace, can play out wide - which none of the others can - and scores goals. He's better than Lallana and Firmino

It's not really.

It's a shit position to be in given where we are but we're in desperate need of a one or two top class star players if we have any hope of genuine progress next season.

I just think we'll end up scrabbling around mid-table again if we end up spunking 30-40M on players that represent an incremental improvement.

Is Mane destined for great things or is he another good - maybe even very good in the right environment - but not great player?

That's the way I see it.
He is undoubtedly a very good player. But I can't see us reaping 30M+ worths of improvement by signing him.

I'd rather take a punt on a cheaper alternative, or several, than buying Mane for £30 million. As much I rate him, overpaying from Southampton again us just too much to bear. There must be players as good in Europe for half that price.

With the new TV money sloshing around I'd say 30M is the new 15M. Better get used to a quantum leap in transfer fees.

Why is he?

Salzburg had won their home leg in the last qualification round for 2014/15's CL 2-0 against Malmo.

Two days before the away leg he left the training camp and refused to play the match to force his move to Southampton. A talk to clear things between the manager, the DoF and the player which was scheduled for the next day was cancelled because Mane didn't turn up.

The turmoil caused by all this was surely one of the reasons Salzburg was kicked out of the CL the next day.

As far as I'm concerned I don't want such a cunt to play for us.

If Skullflower didn't exist, it would be necessary to invent him.
