At the age of 18 ffs he can't play 2 or 3 games of football a week?! I could have.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says teenage winger Raheem Sterling's slump in form is 'to be expected', insisting he will not rush the youngster's progress.

Sterling has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Anfield after making his senior debut in March last year, notching up 35 appearances so far this term.

His eye-catching performances also saw the 18-year-old called up to the senior England squad and he earned his first full cap in a friendly against Sweden in November.

However, Rodgers has not named Sterling in his starting line-up in the Premier League for six weeks as the youngster continues his development out of the limelight.

The manager believes it is to be expected that the winger's form has dipped in recent weeks as his first season at the top level takes its toll.

He said: "This is a kid we're talking about so we have to take a wee step back.

"It is so mentally and physically draining this league. It hurts experienced professionals and this boy has just stepped up from the Academy and played first-team football and earned a contract off that. We have to nurture that and at times he's got to have that mentality to keep learning.

"I was talking to him the other day about this, and if he didn't kick another ball this season he's had a good one. It's a very physically demanding league and what you're seeing now is more tiredness of the legs when before he could go up to people and take them on. That zip has gone and that's down to fatigue. Was that to be expected? Yes it was.

"He will have experienced that before but not in the limelight like it is now. He's made such an impact that everyone is looking at him now. But the job is to nurture him.

"He's started his career at first-team level way before many get the opportunity. He's still got lots of improvement to make in his game. Over the years we will look at his plan and development and act accordingly."

Why did he play in the U21 game if he was knackered?

Exactly. Two weeks resting in The Lying Rag somewhere and he would have been back in contention by now. Instead he's been kept on the bench and brought on to get worse and worse. A clean break is what he needs.

That would set a very dangerous precedent for other players who in the future wanted a paid for holiday in The Lying Rag.

A lot of us on here has been airing our concerns with regards to the amount of playing time and responsibilty placed on the young ones shoulders this Season.

It really is about time, as Macca said, that they get a rest. Not only physically but especially, as LTW said, mentally.

It's not rocket science, he's only a kid, and I doubt Rodgers was happy to play Sterling as much as he did, he simply lacked options.

I don't think he's physically knackered, he's fit as a fiddle.
Which begs the question, how is he mentally knackered? Is it the pressure getting to him of having to perform for a big club like us? Does he need counciling for that? I can't see how he's mentally knackered of playing for our club? If any of us got a chance to play for our club upto 3 times a week - we'd be over the moon! Does he go on a downer when the boss picks him?

If he's not mentally ready to part of the big time, we should get him out on loan to build his confidence up or something to be ready to play premiership football.

I never get this moaning about 3 games in a week thing, these days most top level footballers are supreme athletes and could probably run a marathon every bloody day.

He's mentally knackered because that's what playing so many games at that level and at that age does to any player.
Add to this that the players in a club of Liverpool's caliber, who has even been severely under-performing for years despite we all expect us to win always like back in the old days, operates under even bigger pressure than say players at Wigan or even Everton. It's really no wonder why it would wear players down mentally over a given period of time, especially the younger ones.

I believe it has been evident that even some of the more experienced players have suffered from this lack of mental surplus at times too.

The situation is tiring and stressful enough to cope with as a Liverpool fan, yet alone as a 17 year old player who all of a sudden had all the hopes of the club rested on him by the fans because he could skin someone.

He's probably frustrated too, he knows how well he started, and now, even though he's putting in the same effort, things aren't coming off for him. He's probably not experienced enough to know how to deal with it.

I imagine the assualt hasn't helped either. I'm with Macca, we should right the next few weeks off for him, or even the season and come back next season and I bet he'll be back flying again.

next season he'll be knackered from playing in the U21 euro's

That won't be anywhere near as mentally draining. I don't think it's a physical fitness issue, and I don't think anyone has suggested that it is. If he goes to that and performs well, that he won't have an issue at the beginning of next season.

I'm just being pessimistic. I think it'll do him some good. Suarez playing in the confederation cup however.....

Is there something to his drop in form coinciding with the new more lucrative contract? I hate to be the one to say it, but it's happened before.

And of course, more likely he's also got a court-case to deal with over assault. For a kid, that can be a lot to deal with in itself.

2 goals and 6 assists is extremely good for his first season though. No one is close in the league today at the same age.
Shaw has been good. Foxtrot Chambermaid has been very up and down in his second season.

It is a fine line between fitness and freshness. he is fit enough to play, but being part of two to four guys who has carried the biggest burden for this team I suspect he is mentally tired and a break will do him the world of good.

I don't know about all this physical or mental tiredness talk. I think it's too much of a coincidence that his form dipped more or less after he signed that new contract.

Would make sense. Doesn't have to be anything he's planned though.

People should give him time to find his feet now and let him work his way back in to the starting XI. Then we'll most probably see the true Sterling again.

He's 18, played 35 times for us this year already.....he should only have played half that this year, we have to take our time with these kids.

You cannot expect them to be playing and acting as a seasoned pro.

Ronaldo and Rooney were making a similiar amount of appearances at that age. Just sayin.
