The only function of the academy (and reserves for that matter) should be to serve the first team new players. I don't care how many youth cups or reserve leagues we win, if the players don't come through, it's all worthless.

Dalglish set for Anfield role as Rafa shakes up his coaching staff
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is shaking up his backroom staff by dispensing with four of his coaches.
Gary Ablett is being replaced as reserve-team manager after three years. Another former player, Hugh McAuley, is also departing despite guiding the Under 18s to the FA Youth Cup final, where they lost to Arsenal.
Youth coaches Dave Lever and Dave Shannon are also leaving.
Frank McParland will return to oversee the backroom set-up and former Barcelona and Olympiakos coach Jose Segura is taking over as academy director.
Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish appears set to return to the club as adviser or ambassador.
Popular former midfielder Gary McAllister is also being linked with a coaching role.

LFC ANNOUNCE ABLETT DEPARTURE

Liverpool FC today confirmed reserves manager Gary Ablett will leave the club at the end of this month.
Ablett will depart after the International Cor Groenewegen Tournament in Holland this weekend.
The former Reds defender took up the position in 2006 after moving from Merseyside rivals Everton.
Everyone at Liverpool would like to thank Gary for his hard work over the past three years and wish him all the best for the future.
