What's going on?

Has someone kidnapped that keeper we've had for the last for years and replaced him with vds/gomes with a mask on?

Shouldn't he be instilling confidence in his defence?

Think its a bit of both;hes confident when the defence is solid.

We've been very shaky, and thats made him rattled.

Which of course just makes them worse. 🙁

The Saint is right, don't worry, it's just a blip across the whole defence, very possibly from the nerves brought about by being in with a title shot at the end of April.

It's a blip. He's been the best keeper in the Prem for a while now, and he'll be back to his best before you know it.

His distribution yesterday was utter wank and was rightly highlighted on MOTD

He's having a poor run of form, but I think his overall record needs to be remembered

I would not swap him for anyone

^^what he said^^

Its not the first time Reina's went through a sticky patch. As others have said he's a class act and in my opinion he's been one of Rafa's best signings.

Has he ever missed a match due to injury ?
I'd be tempted for Casillas tbf.

I dunno, pepe has the odd horror-show game once or twice a season, but is overall superlative in every way; brave, agile, quick, durable and great distribution

Nah, Pepe is great.

Plus he's the only keeper we've managed to have for ages who hasnt got worse the longer they play for us.
I dont think its any shame to be behind Casillas as the best keeper of your time though. I've seen Casillas do things i thought were impossible with monotonous regularity. Pepe does it too, just not as consistently.
He's ahead of everyone else for me.

Casillas is the best shot stopper around bar none in my opinion, but I think Pepe is better than him in some areas though - e.g. distribution, commanding the box etc.

Question: When Agger was brought back into the side, and the Carra/Skrtel partnership was split, isn't that when Pepe has seemed shaky?
every now and again brendan posts something simple , with no use of profanities and i agree with him - this is one such time 🙂

On the subject of Pepe, what does he have to do to be regarded as our second best ever? Or is he already there?

I assume most put Clemence first and Grobbelaar or maybe Lawrence second (we'll ignore Scott for now 😉 ) so how does Pepe overtake them? Win a league? Two leagues? A European cup?

Indeed, a keeper has to have confidence in his back four - and vice versa.

Hhmmm, I wouldn't have thought a "command of the box" was Pepe's greatest attribute - unless we're talking about using his area to come out and meet the ball over the top. I've always thought he looked unsure when the crosses were coming in; sometimes his punching is exceptional and other times erratic. Maybe its a little unfair but comparing him to the Great Dane he tries to punch or push the ball away instead of catching it. Anything on 6 yard line seems to have him all at sea.

(Sorry for digging up an old thread :-[ Just wanted to post this under a relevant thread title.)

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina will break a long-standing club record if he doesn't concede a goal against Tottenham on Sunday.

Reina has kept a clean sheet 99 times in 166 games, and will reach the 100 mark faster than any keeper in Liverpool history should he keep another blank at White Hart Lane.

Ray Clemence holds the current record, having reached 100 clean sheets in 217 outings.

Bruce Grobbelaar achieved the milestone after 225 matches, while Elisha Scott did so in 283.

50 games for him to try and break the record. Surely its his for the taking? Kudos.

Heh, this old thread really highlights how long way Pepe has come during his time in Liverpool. He was a great 'keeper from the day one but dealing with crosses was Pepe's main weakness when he came to England. He has really developed this area in his game, hasn't he?

I wouldn't swap him for any 'keeper in the world.

For the price we paid id argue he's Rafas best signing!

Reina is comfortably Rafa's best signing at the club.

He's fantastic, and I hope he's made Captain in the future.

I really hope Reina stays here for many years and like Squiggles said, he looks a captain born & bred. However I wish he'd shut the fuck up talking to the press.
Why? What did he say?
“We have to finish this season in a better position than we are at the moment and make sure we build for the next years and try to be competitive. If not, it’s going to be difficult for them to keep these kind of players.â€

“We have to be sure that we deliver better performances otherwise it’s going to be really, really, really difficult (to finish in the top four).â€

Liverpool have been linked with a host of transfer options and the possibility of bringing in a new striker come January would be a top priority. Fernando Llorente is highly tipped as perfect partner for Torres and manager Roy Hodgson has been closely linked to Wigan winger, Charles N’Zogbia.

“We are not probably as strong as Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham can be so that’s why we have to make sure we build a better squad.†Reina added.

“At the moment, it’s almost impossible to compete for nine months against Chelsea, for example, and that is what I want.â€

“The clubs all around England are building proper squads. We have to do the same and we have to be able to compete.â€

“We are not playing well enough, especially away from home, and we have to make sure we improve this aspect otherwise we will be struggling,†Reina told ESPNSoccernet.

“It’s so difficult to go anywhere and beat teams but if we want to be up there at the end of the season, we have to.â€

However, Reina defended under-fire boss Roy Hodgson, who has been berated by fans chanting the name of former player/manager Kenny Dalglish and criticised his style of management.

“Ideas in football are relatively important but what makes a system work are the players,†said the 28-year-old.

“We are the ones who have to show a bit more on the pitch. Rafa was really beloved in Liverpool but I think it’s about time that the fans get behind Roy 100%. I don’t think it is heavy criticism out there anyway.â€

Not so much damaging quotes (except maybe the first one) but he just seems to have far too much to say recently. I'd like our players to keep it shut and get on with their own game.

ROY HODGSON has paid tribute to goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who is on the brink of breaking another Liverpool FC record against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow.

If the Spaniard keeps a clean sheet at White Hart Lane he will become the quickest man to a century of league shut-outs in the club’s history.

Tomorrow will be Reina’s 197th league appearance and he will comfortably beat the record held by Ray Clemence who reached a ton of clean sheets in his 217th game.

“We will do everything we can to help Pepe get it,†Hodgson said.

“Pepe has made some very important saves along the way.

“That record says something about Pepe and it also says something about the team’s defensive record over the years which has been very good.

“Liverpool defended well under Rafa Benitez and were always a difficult team to beat.
I’m sure Pepe would be the first to pay credit to that.

“If you are sloppy defensively it makes the task of winning that much more difficult.
