I don't think it's just our inactivity/lack of depth. I mean, we can argue that Origi came off the bench and scored. The problem today wasn't depth, the team we had out is more or less our best team, give or take the lack of Firmino and the inclusion of Ox. That team beats most teams.
The problem is a bit more complex. I don't think the defense is as good as it was:
- Trent, for the millionth time, still isn't a very good defender. World class player, mediocre defender - this hasn't improved one bit
- VVD is either slowly getting back to where he was, or we might have to contemplate the idea that he might not get back to quite that level
- Matip isn't getting younger, he's a great defender, but we look very flat at the minute between him and VVD when anything comes down the middle, neither are that quick on the turn, VVD isn't slow at all, but he's a big lad and at the minute they are both getting sucked into situations and when that happens high up the pitch we get caught.
- Robbo has been below par for a while. Defensively he's still pretty sound, but there's an edge that's missing and his delivery is now hit and miss.
- The midfield lacks a clear defined "best" combination. Without Gini it's a bit cumbersome and similarly to the defense, it's very flat. Ox is past his best and probably has little future here, but at least he gives us someone who carries the ball. Without Keita or Elliott we're sorely lacking someone who puts the opposition on the back foot, from the centre of the pitch. Thiago is great on his day, but a bit worryingly lax at times and it can be costly. Henderson played it safe way too many times today, and Fabs broke up the play well, but is as flat footed as Matip and VVD can be, so this in turn troubles us with quick simple passes in behind.
I don't know what the answer is, because our set up is crucial to how we play. We dropped off 10 yards last season to cover for the loss of VVD and it showed, now he has come back and we're trying to revert and he doesn't quite have that sharpness or zip that saw him play high up the pitch so effortlessly. So Trent still plays high and gets caught, and the centre back pairing lack the ability to cover. Ideally one should be mopping up for the other, which is why Gomez's pace was always such a good asset. The problem we have now is deciding between two players who read the game exceptionally well but will get caught out occasionally, and players like Konate and Gomez who have that extra mobility but lack the coolness and awareness.
The team once again came up against a side who exposed our vulnerabilities and made us look weak and unbalanced. We've largely been excellent this season but not without the feeling that we could concede in pretty much every game (including United). This is where we often look to Klopp to offer a plan B and it doesn't seem to happen. Maybe we just have to accept that some teams will give us a game and have the beating of us, every now and then. But on the back of last week's capitulation, it's a worry that teams are finding weaknesses in us again and others will be watching and will follow suit when playing us.
There's definitely a case for the Greek getting a run and I'd also be inclined to give Origi or Minamino more game time.
