Palace Post Match

Yeah, but why should he attempt to do that when there is contact and we could get a penalty. If he had stayed on his feet but fucked up the chance we'd be screaming at him for not falling over.

Of course, I'm not complaining and the vast majority of penalties are all deliberate choices to go down. Benteke just looks stupid because he got caught off guard and couldn't adjust his fall in time to make it look realistic.

Pardew and Ledley were having a go at him in the Telegraph today.

Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley has accused Christian Benteke of diving to win a last-minute penalty on Sunday.
Palace defender Damien Delaney was deemed to have brought down the Liverpool forward in the fifth added minute of stoppage time.
Referee Andre Marineer originally awarded a goal kick for the incident before an intervention from his assistant, Scott Ledger, resulted in a penalty kick being given.
Replays went onto show that Delaney's right knee did come into contact with the Belgian's left foot.

Despite the footage, Joe Ledley, who scored Crystal Palace's only goal of the game, accused the former Villa man of diving.
"It's definitely not a penalty. It is nothing. I thought it was a dive," Ledley told the Croydon Advertiser.
"If you go to ground there is a chance the referee is going to give it. You cannot blame Damien. On another day that would not have been given.
"I thought the linesman gave it. For me, I thought the referee was in a better position. That is why they are there and that is what they get paid to do. It is not good enough at the moment."

Ex-Liverpool striker Stan Collymore was just one of a number of viewers who perceived the decision to be exceptionally harsh.
Delaney, whose contact was deemed sufficient to justify the award of the penaly, joined Ledley in questioning the controversial decision.
"I can honestly say I didn't make contact with Benteke today and if there was slight contact I didnt impede him and certainly didn't feel there was enough to award a penalty in the 96th min," the Republic of Ireland international wrote.

Delaney remonstrates with referee Andre Marineer
"If a penalty is awarded that late it has to be unequivocal, I waited over an hour to speak with the officials and in fairness to Andre Marriner he said he didn't think it was a penalty but he trusted his linesman that much he awarded it.
"With the way the game was reffed and the physicality of both teams it was unbelievably harsh."
Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew, whose side have now gone without a Premier League victory since December last year, was visibly irate at the decision, snapping at the line of questioning from Sky Sports interviewer Geoff Shreeves.

“I’ve just heard Jamie Carragher saying there was contact and Benteke was within his rights to go down. Jamie Carragher is saying that?
"He’s an ex-pro. Come on. I'm disappointed with both of them [Benteke and the referee], really frustrated with that," Pardew told Sky Sports.
The debate on whether the challenge warranted a penalty continued to rage for hours after the game on social media.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker insisted there was 'no question' the incident was a penalty, calling Delaney's tackle 'a senseless challenge,'
Crystal Palace now find themselves in 15th place in the Premier League on a run of 12 games without a league win.
The Eagles' last victory came in the fifth round of the FA Cup against Tottenham, and Alan Pardew's side meet Reading on Friday night for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.
It's very telling that none of the pictures in that post are taken at the correct moment.

Yep, and I found this from Delaney very stupid aswell:

At least everyone has something to talk about

I'm gonna carry on with my Benteke hate to see him score against utd. He's shit, and he'll never score for us, ever

I'd like to shake that Delaney and Mata by the hand and thank them for the lovely dindins they bought me last night. After my five quid on Liverpool at 7/1 came in I put the winnings on West Bwom at 3/1, so it was a great day for big decisions by excellent officials.

Seemingly Pardews class has rubbed off onto the players.

What the hacks should do now is focus with forensic attention on Palace's players in the next match, because the likes of Zaha and Gayle and others will soon wreck those arguments. And incidentally, if they're bothered about unprofessional behaviour, they should all have a word with Zaha, who showed why he's never fulfilled his potential because he's sledging non-stop like an Aussie wicket keeper. He's so obsessed with talking and winding up opposition players he's hardly ever ready for runs or passes. He often ignores the game because he's having those tiresome attempts at niggling the other players. I guess Pardew will pat him on the back because it 'worked' with Milner, except that good old Pards is currently being depicted as a noble guardian of the morality of the beautiful game.

Is he?

Another Pardew story, possibly apocryphal, but what's almost worse is that it is so entirely believable:

The tale comes from Pardew’s West Ham days, told by former club photographer Steve Bacon, who claimed that one day the coaching staff were sitting down for dinner. When their food arrived, the story goes that Pardew took one look at fitness coach Tony Strudwick’s dinner, decided that looked better than his choice, so just took it. In response protests from everyone present, Pardew simply responded: “When you’re the king, you can do anything.”

I've long held an incredible amount of hate for Pardew. It's possible I might just hate him more than any current manager. He's just the biggest cunt ever, and has done exactly nothing of any genuine note in his entire managerial career, apart from one or two promotions - matched by as many relegations

That increasingly irritating tube Colin Murray has been banging on all morning about Pardew representing 'the moral side of the argument' and thus deserves applauding.

He's actually used "Alan Pardew" and "the moral side of the argument" in the same sentence? Wow.

Apart from him, I do feel at least slightly gratified by the knowledge that not a small number of journalists, players and other managers think he's a total twat

Is this the most enjoyable post match thread on SCM because of the late win, Pardews reaction to it and ensuring social media outbreak?

The man really does seem to be slipping off the deep end. Has he stopped that ludicrous, childish sniping at Klopp for taking the Liverpool job away from his compatriot Rodgers yet?

I may well be more gutted than you.
Hahaha, you possibly are. I'm trying to be stoical about it in that I always knew it was gonna be very difficult to complete the challenge and at least I lost it on a Liverpool victory against Pardew's bunch.

Having rewatched it about a thousand times I think it was a penalty, but one that was given correctly by accident. I don't think it was a dive. It was so instant and fast that there wasn't time for Benteke to process that he felt contact and then go down. If so he's got a faster mind than I give him credit for. The contact was so minimal that I can't believe the officials spotted it at that speed. It could have gone either way, and it was more likely to go the way of Palace because of how late in the game it was a the uncertainty surrounding it and the importance of the decision. That's why they were surprised and also pissed off. If there was a video referee it would have been given with no questions asked.

Origi is getting over praised. He's shown in the last two games that he can lead the line competently, work hard, challenge for the ball and link up play to a point. But he hasn't made much in the way of goal threat. It was no coincident that Benteke had more chances than Origi in his ten minutes on the pitch. For all his faults he knew where to be to influence that match. Origi hasn't had it easy playing City one match and then Palace who like to sit back, but he needs to learn how it make chances and get in the right positions if he's going to keep his place.

Lovren was the stand our player and barely put a foot wrong.

Can was our best midfielder. He's been so much more influential in both attack and defence in the last two matches. Impressive stuff.

Moreno wasn't as awful as we feared although the decision to play him against two very quick and storing wingers still boggles my mind. I don't know what Klopp was thinking there. Moreno has a history of leaving huge amounts of space. Baffling.

Pardew is borderline the most arrogant man in the game, rivalling Mourinho. He takes credit for everything and blame for nothing.

Yeah, agreed. But unlike Mourinho has won fuck all ever.

And Pardew thinks he's genuinely the most handsome man in the country, and irresistible to women. He has form for that, too

And who could forget him actually calling a manager to his face 'a fucking old cunt'

Alan Pardew is 54 years old

I'm a pretty easy going sort of person, but he really does annoy me

Very funny debates guys.
It was still a dive.
Contact was made, but he dived. Simple.
If you extrapolate the argument every single time a player makes ANY physical contact with another no matter how slight and that player throws himself to the ground, its a foul. It isnt, as everybody knows, if you make sufficient contact to knock someone over then its a foul, or if you put them off the motion they were doing, its a foul, grazing past someone is not a foul. Benteke dived. And im cool with that because he won the pen and the game and thats the way the game is these days, but I wouldnt say to any of my pals 'Yer but there was contact' because that would make me look a fucking mug.
He dived.
Everybody, BUT EVERYBODY knows it.

S'mad the way some folks try to blag their own head.

not all dives are the same. if you've been impeded then it's fair enough to milk it to make sure it gets flagged.
