No, that goal was mostly down to Almunia being shit.

It was a very good finish.

which no top keeper should ever let in

whatever...

I side with KHL in this thread

We were slightly outplayed in the first half and it's partly Mashers job to prevent that.

Second half he was brilliant.

I also think it was a top strike from N'gog and believe a few keepers would have let that in.

He always would have. I don't know where this myth about him not trying last year came from either?
TBF he wasn't great in the first half of the season (and I say that as a big Masher fan). Once Christmas had come and gone, it was a different story and Masher did more than any other player except Pepe to save us from an even worse outcome to the season as a whole.

I'm not saying it was an awful strike or antyhing, he hit it well, but it should never have been allowed to go in. Similar to Forlan's second against Dudek that time.
so you don't think it was poor goalkeeping?
Well, it's both isn't it?

It's a nothing debate.

I hope he stays.

We should tell Inter/Barca that their deadline for making an offer is a week before the transfer deadline - because the £20m is fuck-all use to us if we don't have time to spend it.

Hats off to macher amazing effort and used the ball better going forward

AN ASSIST as well

Maybe having stevie next to him drove him forward. Poulsen has a lot to replace on that performance today
That's right Fox, stick to your guns.

ha, I still think his type of player is over rated and he is not worth over £12 million say but he was excellent today, you have to say.

Just because Ngog was superb in 2nd half does not mean I think he is world class either, same thing

Masher has big limitations but played very well today, maybe playing next to a more attacking player suited him - we may never know

Masher is fucking amazing and that beautiful slide pass to N'Gog for the goal shows he's not just all hustle and bustle. Great display.

Wow

Anyways, apart from a small amount of shite being spoken about, I really wish Macher stays. Had he stayed on I am not sure they would have scored.
If we could keep Mascher , get a decent back up striker and aleft back we would be in a pretty good place.

regards

Got a spare £15m, Vlad?

I don't understand what you're trying to take away from N'Gog. Whether the keeper covered it well or not, it's down to the attacker to expose any openings, and he did, emphatically.

Like Forlan's second? As if.

That was a belter of a strike and better keepers than Almunia would have struggled to keep it out

not getting beaten at your near post is such a cliché. sometimes the attacker strikes the ball with such power that is past the keeper before the keeper even know whats happened.

I don't think anyone can dress him up to be a near good enough stand in for Torres, not going off last season anyway. Though despite his indifferent form on the pitch, he's continually proven to be a decent goalscorer and he takes up good positions like any good striker would.

As said, for £1.5m he's proving a bit of a steal, either in the goals contribution he'll make to us, or a fairly hefty transfer fee in the future.

He's a nice lad, I liked his interview on the Offal, he's talking about just wanting to score goals for us and how he's worked hard in training. He looks like he's bulked up a bit too over the Summer, which has shown in some of his improved hold up play.

It was a great strike, Van der saar didnt get half the criticism when Torres beat him at his near post in the 2-0 game last season. Its the fact that Almunia is largely considered as a twit that he's taking so much stick for it, keepers get beaten at their near post every weekend and N'gog should get more credit for it. I think its a similar reason that Reina hasnt gotten much criticism for yesterday, because he's well respected and we all know he'll bounce back.

There's this weird unwritten but constantly quoted rule from the school of Jamie Redkappisms that you shouldn't be beaten on your near post... So fucking Gerrard's goal on Thursday was shit? And Torres past VDS? and Ngog yesterday? It's bullshit - it's dead hard to save at your near post and if you're stuck on it then you can't possibly save at the far one. If your striker happens to be boss and twats it in the corner you're fucked... but that's like life and stuff.

Beating the keeper at the near post is just another way of saying the goal was scored at the post that the keeper was closer to. ie the ball was close to the keeper, therefore he should have a better chance of stopping it, because he's closer to it. Which is true.

But he's playing the percentages and expecting a shot across him and that's what his body is expecting to have to do next, so an accurate one nearer to the smaller target is more likely to succeed.

So you should never go for the far post? Bollocks.

Did I say that?

I know you have a fascination with Jamie Redknapps spray on trousers but don't believe everthing he says, Brendan.

What?

my basic point is the keeper is favorite to save near post if that's the side the attacker goes for, but saying a keeper should NEVER get beaten near post is bullshit.

Indeed.

It would have been a fantastic save if he'd kept it out, 7 yards out smacked in.... regardless of whether it was closer to him on the near post it was hard to save.
