Liverpool's Roy Hodgson confident of keeping Javier Mascherano after Inter Milan promise
Javier Mascherano may be forced to remain at Liverpool until January at the earliest after Roy Hodgson revealed he had been assured by Massimo Moratti, the owner of Inter Milan, that the Italian champions would not move for any of his players this month.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson confident of keeping Javier Mascherano after Inter assurances

The Argentina international informed Hodgson he wished to leave Anfield for personal reasons upon his return to training last month and Inter, now managed by Rafael Benítez, had been expected to lodge a £25 million bid before the transfer window closes on Aug 31. Dirk Kuyt's agent has also confirmed that his client his a £13 million target for the Spaniard.

But Hodgson, who retains close ties to the club he once managed, has been told by Moratti that Inter will not pursue their interest in either player despite Benítez's desire to be reunited with both.

"I spoke to Massimo Moratti on Wedneday about the fact they are not going to buy Liverpool players," said Hodgson. "I believe they were only interested in two of our players and they are not going to buy them. Moratti said they are not going to do that."

It is believed Benítez had prepared a player-plus-cash deal – including either the former Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari or Brazilian winger Mancini – to secure Mascherano, though he may yet lobby Moratti to make Liverpool a straight cash offer matching their asking price.

The Argentine's other long-term suitors, Barcelona, last week suggested they are not considering a bid for the 26 year-old – though sources in Spain intimated they are monitoring the situation – while he is not thought to be a priority for Real Madrid, despite suggestions Jose Mourinho will try to hijack any deal.

Hodgson is so confident of retaining Mascherano, though, that he is thought to be close to allowing Alberto Aquilani, the Italian international signed for £17 million just a year ago, to join Juventus on a season-long loan.

"He might go out on loan," said Hodgson. "It is being discussed. Last year he came here and hardly played, so if he has another season like that, his value will vastly diminish and, more importantly, he will be very unhappy.

"He came here to play every week as a very expensive signing, the first name on the team sheet. But with Steven Gerrard, Mascherano and Joe Cole, it is going to be very hard for me to say to him that he will always be playing, so of course then he would risk not getting enough games again."

Carlos Salcido, PSV Eindhoven's Mexican international left-back, has emerged as Hodgson's latest target to fill his troublesome left-back slot. Liverpool are also tracking the 30-year-old's club team-mate Ola Toivonen.

Where Hodgson has to take such financial considerations into account, his counterpart on Monday, Manchester City's Roberto Mancini, has no such concerns.

The Liverpool manager, though, insists he is not jealous of the Italian. "I am in a position I want to be in," he said. "I am working for a club I have always wanted to work for. It is for other people to be jealous of me."

FK Rabotnicki, the Macedonian side beaten by Liverpool in the Europa League qualifying round, have been fined £8,000 by UEFA for racist chants directed at the English side's players during their meeting in Skopje last month.

I guess that must have been an acorn that hit our heads earlier. The sky doesn't appear to be falling after all.

1 - So that rules out Kuyt too.

2 - who the fuck do these cunts think they are? We are Liverpool FC, one of the biggest teams in the World, playing in one of the toughest leagues in the World. They're Inter Milan, one of the biggest teams in the World playing in one of the slowest, dull as shit leagues in the World.

WTF? So they come from a few years of obscurity to a season of success and that's it?? What a load of fickle bollocks this game has become, it's fucking showbusiness. Suddenly Inter Milan give us the grace of allowing us until January to keep hold of our players? Go fuck you twats.

Sorry Mark but the only quotes in the article are Hodgson saying that Moratti had assured him that Inter would not be buying either Masher or Kuyt.

The part about Masherano going during the January window is from the usual press add on a load of bullshit bit

I do like Roy's handling of the media quite a bit.

Carlos Salcido yes I remember thinking this Mexican LB was excellent during the WC. Man I hope we get him miles better than any of the shite LB we be linked with.

Well said........Its the 21st of August and Torres, Gerrard and Mascher are still our players. We have made some good additions to the squad in Cole and Jovanovic, Poulsen is great cover, Kelly is showing he seems to have something. We need another striker and left back - work is in progress.
It's not great, but it's much much better than it could have been, and certainly better than predicted by some, and indeed we are in a stronger team position (if we assume the striker and left back issue) than we were this time last year...did I mention a happier dressing room?

I suggested him yonks ago Vlad. He's not one for the future, but fuck the future just now, let's get back into the top 4.

If indeed he does stay now, then what a boost this is. I have no doubt he will give 100% every time.

Spot on, Vlads!

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has agreed personal terms with Barcelona for a move to the Spanish side, however the clubs are yet to settle on a fee. Barca have offered around £12m but Liverpool want closer to £21m.

Barca can get to fuck if there's any truth in this. The received 28m for the inferior Yaya Toure.

Unless someone pays up we have to insist he gets on with it.

Closer to £21m, that's going to be £18 or £19m, what we paid for him. That can't be right , or true, unless there is a player in that too.

don't clubs agree a fee and THEN the player agrees personal terms?

generally - i think if a team believes they can reach an agreement then they may allow the player to discuss personal terms while the agreement is being negotiated.. however there is no way we would allow Mascherano to discuss terms as it would simply cause more complications. Imagine Mascher having talks and then being told it has been called off again - i doubt he would be a very positive person to have around the club... If they have spoken to him without our blessing then i believe that is 'taPPING UP'. i doubt they would be so stupid with such a high profile transfer.

I think this was partly the debate they were having on Sky Sports after the Manc match yesterday.

Especially with the bigger players it makes sense for the signing club to get a feel for how keen the player is to move, and what kind of contract they will demand.

Very, very, very naive.

We haven't accepted an offer from Barca, yet I would bet my testes on the fact that Barca's reps have probably been speaking to Masch's agent for yonks.

And I would also wager that most transfers are done this way these days.

Reviewing news outlets it seems Inter have given up the chase and that Barca don't have the finances to mount a cash bid to meet LFC's valuation.

I assume that should a deal not be done for Mascher we won't have the finances for a back-up striker?

We'll probably end up taking a player (Trezeguet) + cash for Kuyt and using the little cash from that deal to fund something.

I hope you're right, but I wonder whether it may depend on how desperate Roy is for the money to plug the gaps in the squad.

It wouldn't really work like that at all. Masher is fully aware of the situation and this is generally the norm now to allow transfers to go through quickly, that the player is given permission, in principle, to discuss terms with a view to a move, should the clubs eventually agree on a fee.

They can go fuck for £12m though, but I get this horrible feeling we're not going to be too happy with the transfer fee.

Our financial position is well known and I expect Barca are aware that we need funds from transfers before we can make a move to buy the cover we so obviously need.

Buying Poulsen was also a signal that we're entertaining the possibility of losing Mascherano at some point.

We're not in a strong position.

Im not so sure I agree with you there. Mascher is our player and according to Roy has been made aware that he will only leave if our valuation is met.
