NFL Regular & Post Season Thread

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Meant to post the other night about the Giants Vs. Eagles game. What a fucking game, mistakes and big plays galore (Jackson had a monster), and I really fancy our chances in the playoffs now (which barring a monumental fuckup, we should make with relative ease). I tell ya what though, Eli isn't a quarter of the player his brother is.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Yeah, Eli is a joke, I've always thought so.

I can not believe the Cowboys lost to the fucking Chargers, of all teams, embarrassing.

I want to punch Phillip Rivers.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

If we just represent ourselves well this time round I will be happy. Then we'll have something to hopefully build upon next year to try and have a proper start to the season, rather than start stutter stop, start stutter stop again.

They went to the NFC Championship game last season, amigo, and they've been to four others since 2002. Don't write 'em off... Once they're in, IF they're in, they'll be tough to beat.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

He seems like a guy who's always in trouble, but no one wishes this on anyone. Let's hope he pulls through:

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (AP)—Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry is “battling for his life†after falling out of the back of a pickup during what police described as a domestic dispute with his fiancee on Wednesday.

Henry was found in the road in south Charlotte “apparently suffering life-threatening injuries,†according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Police spokesman Robert Fey said officers were stationed near the 26-year-old Henry’s hospital room. He had no information on Henry’s condition, but said he was alive.

“We ask everyone to pray for Chris,†agent Andy Simms of PlayersRep Sports said in a statement. “We also ask that you respect the privacy of Chris’ family. Chris is indeed battling for his life tonight, and our thoughts and prayers (are) with him during this extremely difficult time.â€

Police said a dispute began at a home just before noon and Henry jumped into the bed of the pickup truck as his fiancee—whom they did not identify by name — was driving away from the residence.

“The domestic situation continued between the operator and Mr. Henry,†the police said in a statement. “At some point while she was driving, Mr. Henry came out of the back of the vehicle.â€

Henry was found on a residential street about half a mile (800 meters) from the home when police were called to the scene. Fey wouldn’t identify the woman and said no charges would be filed Wednesday.

Henry is engaged to Loleini Tonga, and the couple has been raising three children.

Henry was away from the team after breaking his left forearm during a win over Baltimore on Nov. 8. He had surgery and was placed on season-ending injured reserve following the game. Charlotte is home to his fiancee’s parents.

Team spokesman Jack Brennan said he had little information other than Henry was badly hurt.

“We are aware he was in an accident and that his injuries are very serious,†Brennan said. “We are staying in touch with the situation and are ready to offer whatever assistance we can.â€

Henry is in the final year of his contract with the Bengals, who let him go after his fifth arrest following the 2007 season. Owner Mike Brown(notes) then brought him back a few months later, signing him to a two-year deal. Henry had stayed out of trouble with the police since his return.

In an interview with The Cincinnati Enquirer in October, Henry credited his fiancee for helping him straighten out his life, saying, “She’s been a big help. She’s been right here with me and going through things and helping out on my side. We have the kids, and she has my back with everything I’ve needed.â€

From the start, his career has been sidetracked by off-the-field problems.

Henry repeatedly got in trouble at West Virginia, where former Mountaineers coach Rich Rodriguez told him that he was an embarrassment to himself and the program.

Most teams to shied away from Henry in the 2005 draft. Cincinnati was the only one that brought him in for a visit, and warned him that he had to stay out of trouble if he was going to make it in the NFL. Then, the Bengals drafted him in the third round.

His ability to run past defenders made him an integral part of the Bengals’ run to the playoffs in 2005. He caught Carson Palmer’s(notes) only pass in a playoff loss to Pittsburgh.

His rookie season also marked the beginning of his problems in the NFL. He was arrested for marijuana possession in December 2005, and again on a weapons charge a month later in Florida. He was arrested four times in all, drawing repeated suspensions—two games in 2006, the first half of the 2007 season— for violating the league’s conduct policy.

Before the start of the season, he got a tattoo that said “Blessed†below his left ear, a reminder of how many chances he’s had.

“I don’t live the way I did in the past,†Henry said, in an interview with The Associated Press during training camp. “I kind of plan my days out and take it one day at a time and stay away from the wrong people. I’m not partying anymore. I’m just focused on football right now and my family. I don’t associate with the same people. I’ve cmpletely changed everything.â€

AP Sports Writer Joe Kay and Associated Press Writer Dan Sewell in Cincinnati contributed to this report.

Bengals WR Chris Henry dies from injuries following domestic dispute
Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry has died, one day after falling out of the back of a pickup truck in what authorities described as a domestic dispute with his fiancee.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Henry died at 6:36 a.m. Thursday. Henry was 26.

Henry through the years Henry was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after being found on a residential road. Police said the dispute began at a home about a half-mile away, and Henry jumped into the bed of the pickup truck as his fiancee was driving away from the residence.

Police said at some point when she was driving, Henry "came out of the back of the vehicle." They wouldn't identify the woman, and no charges were immediately filed.

Police spokeswoman Rosalyn Harrington said homicide detectives have been assigned to the case but had no further information. Police have not released the 911 tapes, and Harrington wouldn't say if the woman was present at the scene when police arrived.

Henry is engaged to Loleini Tonga, and the couple has been raising three children. Tonga's MySpace page identifies herself as "Mrs. C. Henry" and has a picture of her next to a person who appears to be Henry. She also has a post from Tuesday talking about buying wedding rings. A neighbor said Wednesday that the Tonga family owns the home where police say the incident began. Charlotte is home to his fiancee's parents.

Henry was away from the team after breaking his left forearm during a win over Baltimore on Nov. 8. He had surgery and was placed on injured reserve.

He caught a touchdown pass in each of Cincinnati's four preseason games. A thigh injury slowed him early in the season, and he had 12 catches for 236 yards -- his 19.7-yard average per catch leads the team -- when he broke his left arm during the win over Baltimore, ending his season.

When he showed up in the locker room for the first time since surgery to fix the fracture, Henry sounded confident he could get through his latest setback.

"It just comes with time, you know?" he said. "I learned to handle all situations, so I'll be all right."

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

I didn't watch the game but reading reports make me really happy. Romo has had his 3rd STRAIGHT really good December game - he's over that 'label'. We've beaten the best team in football - and limited their passing attack to less than 300 yards. Brees lost two fumbles and threw a pick to Jenkins (who I've mentioned in this thread already, and on this path, is about to become one of the best in the league). Some posts from Moseley:

Miles Austin is obviously the Cowboys' No. 1 wide receiver at this point. He had the big touchdown early in the game, but it was his catch and run on a third-and-long with 6:28 left in the game that held the Saints' comeback at bay. You can tell Romo has so much faith in Austin. Conversely, why would anyone have faith in Roy Williams at this point? His drop on a quick slant in the fourth quarter allowed the Saints to continue their comeback. I'd bench the guy. He really has no business being on the field -- especially with players such as Kevin Ogletree and Patrick Crayton making clutch catches.

Mike Jenkins is about to become a perennial Pro Bowl player if he keeps this up. The Cowboys' second-year cornerback went toe-to-toe with perhaps the deepest group of receivers in the league. His interception in the second quarter ended a Saints scoring threat and he made plays throughout the game. He's playing with a swagger right now that's pretty impressive. And he's getting good jams at the line of scrimmage. Jenkins told me Wednesday he's a huge fan of Charles Woodson's game. And on Saturday night, he sort of reminded me of Woodson. He's by far the best cornerback the Cowboys have right now and he'll be in the Pro Bowl mix next season.

This had to be outside linebacker Anthony Spencer's best game as a Cowboy. With Ware resting quite a bit on first and second down, Spencer turned up the pressure. For some reason, the Saints kept forgetting to block him and Spencer took advantage. Spencer and Ware combined for four sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. This is what the Cowboys had in mind when they drafted Spencer in the first round.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

If they finish 15-1 this may actually be good news for the saints too as they can forget about the 19-0 stuff now

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

I'm not so sure mate - they seemed to have been off the past 4 games now:

1) Bucs - they were down for most of the 1st half
2) Redskins - Had Suisham made the FG, Redskins up by 10 with a 2-3 minutes left
3) Falcons - they struggled to beat a team without their top QB & RB playing any snaps
4) Cowboys - absolutely dominated! 🙂

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

True, they've not played well for many parts of the season and seem to have gotten away with it. I just think it would be better that they don't have to think about that and can just concentrate on each game now.

Even the Lions scored 27 past them 😉

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

no one is saying the Saints aren't a great team ... but the past month, they've been very average ... and I think the middle of the defense is soft - that could be even more of a weakness than their revolving door secondary.

I still want the saints to win it

If the Cowboys don't, I'd like to see the Vikes or Colts win it. So for me, either the Vikes or Colts! 😉

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Thoroughly deserved win, Avy - Well done.

They came out strong, didn't let up until mi-way through the 3rd, and although the Saints did make it interesting late, Dallas are too good a team to give up THAT big a lead.

Could be a "turning point" game.

'Course, they could very well also go to Washington and get shut down now, too.

Who knows with these eejits?!?!

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

If the O-Line stays healthy ole chap, I think we have a good chance to cause major noise. Romo has grown up it seems - his performances this month have been fantastic and if we can give him some time, we have enough talent (pity ROy Williams is struggling so badly) to move the chains.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

I desparately want the Lions to get #2 pick so they can get Ndamukong Suh, though it looks as though the Bucs will get it. I have a feeling the Lions may beat the Bears in 2 weeks if Stafford is back, and finish 3-13.

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Those mighty Giants have given up 40+ points AGAIN ...

A nice kick:

CLEVELAND -- Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski has kicked a 61-yard field goal on the final play of the first half against the Cleveland Browns. It's the fourth longest field goal in NFL history.

Janikowski kicked a low liner that barely cleared the cross bar, hitting the goose-neck support and bouncing back onto the field Sunday. It was a career-long kick and a team record for the powerful left-footer. He was mobbed by a few teammates after pulling the Raiders within 17-9.

Janikowski's previous best was a 57-yarder last season in overtime to beat the New York Jets.

Tom Dempsey of New Orleans (1970) and Jason Elam of Denver(1998) hold the league with record with 63-yarders. Matt Bryant of Tampa Bay (2006) kicked a 62-yarder.

Yes! Bucs win! Now just need the Lions to do what they do best and lose...

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Saints may have peaked a bit too early ... That's 5 straight games where they've been average, or at least 'Not at that level'. Granted, they're 3-2 in those games but still - I'd be worried Jules.

I watched the 2nd half of the Ravens-Steelers and how the Steelers came out with the win is unreal. The Ravens were phenomenal in the 3Q and just blew it with really untimely penalties.

INT return for TD called back due to penalty
McGahee TD Run called back for holding (I think it was a WR).
Mason 5 yards free in the End Zone - dropped TD pass
Steelers ran 4 players the WHOLE QUARTER!!!

If the Steelers make the playoffs (and I have no clue what the tie breakers are), I'd put them as the big dark horse in the AFC again. Though they have no running game (Parker and Mindenhall - sp? - are shit), Big Ben does know how to win games in the air and their defense, while not as dominating as last year, is still bloody good. What happened to defensive MVP from last year?

LTW - I'm starting to worry that your boys may have the momentum in the NFC 🙁
[/quote]

I'll be very unsurprised if the Redskins beats us tonight ... This team is still the Cowboys and until they prove they can get over the hump (and they've yet to do that despite 3 good December games), I'd still not worry about them too much.

The Eagles are the hottest team in the NFC right now (5 straight wins) but still way dependent on the long ball ...

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

Are there any Rams fans here? What are the chances of them going for Ndamukong Suh rather than a QB? They'd better not...

Re: NFL Regular Season Thread

I think this is the year that Donovan and Andy validate what they have done together. They aren't too reliant on teh deep ball LTW. They really do a lot very well (Deseany didnt have a big gain play today) and most importantly Brian Westbrook is completely rested for the playoffs and has these two games to get some rhythm.

Chargers vs. Eagles in the Super Bowl is the pick I am gonna go for.
With the Colts being stupid AGAIN and the Chargers being well matched against them.
And with the Saints not in form and the Brett Farve sucking in the cold/pressure whatever it is.

Oh an about the G-men. They suffered from the same syndrome Liverpool has; if they played well the whole game great, if things went against them confidence went head dropped and points rolled. It hurts me to think what might have happened in this game if Madison Hedgecock hadn't gotten that hold stopping a 7-0 lead or if Manningham hadn't fumbled that 1st down. But we didn't deserve to win so its ok. I hope that we get rid of Sheridan and not Osi. People underrating him again not givin him the benefit of the doubt with his knee.

Espn analyst today said they would go for Suh to improve the effectiveness of last years pick Chris Long, who has started to show his promise. They'd be half way there to a dominant D-line also. Plus no one is very high on this years QBs. Sorry to be the bearer of awful news, cause he would be a tasty addition to a Lions team starting to garner a nice amount of talent.
