First ratings of 2018, after my typically lengthy Xmas break, so apologies to everyone who looks forward to my forensic and enthralling breakdowns for having to wait so long and missing some key fixtures.
But we're back in the saddle!
In this game, more than any other, the result is all that counts. The rivalry with the Bitters is always intense, but the added Allardyce factor has, if anything, turned it up another notch, especially given the jammy fucking point they got in the league recently.
This was a match that had little quality on show, with defenders taking the honours - in every sense. Everton played better in this game than the aforementioned league draw, but they still couldn't argue that they deserved any more. Liverpool were disjointed and lacking in genuine class, with some really slack passing and lackadaisical finishing. It's never easy to be without two of your best players, and certainly it doesn't make the prospect of a Coutinho-less Liverpool any more palatable, but we still had more quality.
Still, the manner in which the game was won was delicious, and the massively pressurised debut of the world's most expensive defender was, overall, fantastic.
Karius (5) Did little to make his case to be the first-choice, with some weirdly hesitant decision- making. He's also a fucking liability with crosses, often staying rooted to his line or just dropping them.
VVD (9) What a debut! Won everything in the air, looked calm and composed, and then popped up with the winner. Boss.
Matip (5) Plenty of speculation as to who will be VVD's first-choice partner, but I stand by my original view: someone else who doesn't yet play for us. A few seem to favour Matip, but that's just wrong, because he's a 50p-headed, weak-as-piss mediocrity
Gomez (5) No for the first time this season, he was hooked after totally falling apart. A decent first half, followed by a mental collapse, in which he seemed to forget how to play football. He's done this two or three times now, which is worrying. Also of major concern is the issue he has with knowing who is around him, he seems totally oblivious to the possibility that players might be attacking the ball outside of his peripheral vision (which should be very good actually, given his fucking eyes are on the side of his head, like Troy Deeney)
Robertson (8) Oh yes. A reassuringly old-school blood and thunder Derby display from a defender. Involved all over the pitch, and never stopped moving all game. A performance full of grit, determination and no little quality
Can (6) So hard to rate sometimes; he can look lethargic and sloppy, and then launch into a lung-busting run that takes him 50 yard up the pitch. He has played a LOT of minutes given Henderson's injuries, so he probably deserves a rest, but we don't have another player who can do that DM role.
Milner (6) Scored the penalty and delivered his usual indefatigable midfield display, but again sometimes lacks a bit of quality on the ball, and has a tendency to drift very wide, which helps out the fullbacks, but often left Can totally on his own in the middle
Chamberlain (5) Yes, there were a few lovely set-piece deliveries and his ball-carrying was typically effective. But he's got no footballing brain at all. None. His brain shits itself when he gets near the opposition box
Lallana (5) Was typically involved and saw a lot of the ball, but other than winning a dodgy penalty, didn't do much of any real quality in possession and wasted a great chance with a pathetic effort at goal.
Mane (6) This might be generous. Probably a 5? His passing was largely fucking atrocious and he didn't create enough, but his quick feet and pace were a worry for the Bitters, even if he was below his usual level.
Firmino (6) Not sure if this is also generous. Typically hard-working and the occasional lovely touch and flick, but also a bit sloppy and never looked like scoring.
Subs:
Wijnaldum (6) Solid in possession, apart from one dreadful pass, he helped shore up the midfield.
Solanke (4) Oh dear. Followed up his last abysmal display with another atrocious - but thankfully short - shitshow
